      For me it changes between Butchered At Birth, and Tomb Of The Mutilated. There isn't a bad CC album in the entire discography in my opinion. When I was really young, I used to only like the Chris Barnes era CC albums, but after I got older, I started to really love the George Fisher era even more, especially Vile, Gallery, and Bloodthirst, along with The Wretched Spawn. I even went back to Gore Obsessed, and was surprised at how awesome it is when I used to think it was average at best. The Kill, Evisceration Plague, and Torture era was also great. Like I said, all of them are excellent Death Metal all the way up to the modern era of CC. When a Death Metal band is still going strong in their 50's, that's when you know they truly love what they do and feel a deep obligation to keep setting the bar for their style of music. There have been a ton of great Death Metal bands, but when it comes to Death Metal in its purest form, CC is that band.

    I just think it's so cool that you actually got into Death Metal, and Metal in general. Once you get it, it changes your entire perspective of music. If you haven't heard anything like it before, it seems overwhelming, but if you have a good sense of rhythm, and hear the guitars, and the drums playing off of each other, and you start recognizing the vocals as an extension of the aggression, it becomes something you can't live without. What I love about Death Metal, Black Metal, and Extreme music in general is that there is something for everyone, and each band sounds different, even if they are a part of the same subgenre. The human ear starts to get used to the dissonance, and the darkness of the riffing, the vocals, and the subject matter in the lyrics. Before you know it, it doesn't sound so foreign.

    I always felt like the Chris Barnes era of Cannibal felt more authenticly evil. Once Corpsegrinder came in, I felt Cannibal got a little...cartoonish. Nothing at all against Corpsegrinder, and I also love the Corpsegrinder albums tho. I actually discovered CC watching Ace Ventura as a kid, lol. I remember as a kid thinking to myself: "One day I'm gonna be in a band like that." Favorite record from that era is butchered at birth. Currently learning how to play that album on guitar. Love your channel Kaiya!! 🤘❤

    Death metal is full of talent that quit the music scene for various reasons... (lack of enthusiasm... money issues... family commitments...)
    Scott Burns was involved in the metal scene for a decade since the 80's and by 1994, he was frustrated w/ the lack of money and the demands & pressure of the music industry... Cannibal recalled Burns walking out of the studio during sessions... and other bands saying that he did the same w/ them. By 1997, Burns just wanted to try something else and producer Jim Morris said that Burns never wanted to set foot in a studio again 😂 Burns is still friends w/ the bands he worked with...
    Original Cannibal guitarist Bob Rusay was fired in 1993 and left the scene completely... He even refused to appear on the Cannibal DVD.
    Jeremy Turner (guitar) of Origin did Cannibal's 2004 tour... but Rob Barrett (guitar) asked to come back in 2005, so Turner was not hired permanently and eventually left Origin as well.
    Suffocation went through so many members... it's a pity that members like Mike Smith (drums), Doug Cerrito (guitar) and Dave Culross (drums) did not stick around... Even Frank Mullen (vocals) decided to leave the band for family life.
    Erik Rutan (guitar) of Cannibal has had Hate Eternal for decades... but has never been able to hold down a solid line-up... Derek Roddy (drums), the late Jared Anderson (bass/ vocals), Randy Piro (bass)... were some of the talent that came & went...

    'Butchered at Birth"... That record made me a Cannibal Corpse fan 🤘🤘
    I bought a copy of 'Vile' back in 1997 and I didn't get it... I heard a lot about Cannibal Corpse, but that was not a record I enjoyed initially... Years later in 1999, I got a used copy of 'Butchered at Birth' and it blew my mind... I went back to listen to 'Vile' w/ fresh ears and even though it was different, it grew on me... I bought a copy of 'Bloodthirst' (their 1999 album) and the 'Live Cannibalism' in 2000... and that was it. I was a fan.
    I actually saw Chris Barnes live first w/ Six Feet Under on their 'True Carnage' tour in the early 2000's.
    My first Cannibal Corpse show was in 2004 on 'The Wretched Spawn' tour in Minneapolis... I saw them later that year again in '04 w/ Napalm Death opening for them (Guitarist Jack Owen had left the band and Jeremy Turner of Origin had filled in the 2nd US tour) I still have the tour shirt for 'The Wretched Spawn'.

    Six Feet Under's 'Haunted' is a great record but not frantic death metal... More groove than chunky... Terry Butler (bass) of Death (Obituary now) did a great job w/ Greg Gall (drums)... Allen West (guitar) was such an underrated talent in Obituary... he wrote the material on the first 2 Six Feet Under records when Obituary was taking a break after 'World demise' in 1994... Obituary is creatively John & Donald Tardy w/ Trevor Peres (guitar) ... and Allen West was merely the lead guitarist, so Six Feet Under provided the opportunity to do what he couldn't in Obituary... Sadly, Allen West had alcoholism issues, quit Six Feet Under in 1998 and his last album w/ Obituary was 'Frozen in time' before he ended up in prison and fired...
    Steve Swanson (guitar) took over in Six Feet Under and did a decent job over the years, but Barnes took over production on the 4th album going forward and the band never got to the next level.
    The issue in Cannibal Corpse was that 4 members wrote the music... Barnes was the lyricist, co-manager and spokesman... and they were fine w/ that. Until the 'Created to kill' sessions, when Barnes was struggling in the studio because the music was getting faster and more brutal; Barnes' vocals were not cutting it.
    Alex Webster (bass) said they rehearsed the album first... but they were at fault because they obviously could not hear Barnes in the rehearsal space... It wasn't until they heard his vocals in the studio on the rough mixes and 4 members were going, "Hmm... that doesn't sound good..."
    Alex, Paul, Jack & Rob were all saying that Barnes' needed to make some changes... Cannibal has always been a band and 5 members have to agree before anything is put on a Cannibal record... Here was a situation where Barnes refused to compromise and 4 guys were left grumbling
    ... they wanted to re-write some of the lyrics. Barnes refused; he wasn't going to sing anyone else's lyrics.
    Once George 'Corpsegrinder' Fisher was contacted to audition for Cannibal around 1996, Alex and Paul were already rewriting the lyrics for the tracks they had written and Corpsegrinder was happy to perform what they had written... Once the vocals were coming out satisfactorily,
    Alex called Barnes and told him over the phone that they were getting a new vocalist... Barnes was not upset - he said he was relieved.

    • @bumface1810
      @bumface1810 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      1) ‘ Barnes refused; he wasn't going to sing anyone else's lyrics’ … Not strictly true. Listen to Bloodlands (Barnes version) and then the VILE version.
      You will notice they share some of the same lyrics. That means at some point (when they recorded those demo tracks) Barnes had agreed to sing SOME of Alex/Paul’s lyrics, because obviously Barnes lyrics do not appear on VILE.

    • @bumface1810
      @bumface1810 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      2) There’s a different interview from around 1995-96 were Barnes expressed frustration about being dismissed from CC. I’m sure it was a mix of emotions… He basically said- ‘I can’t believe they did that’.

    • @sumonjamal1653
      @sumonjamal1653 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@bumface1810 Actually, Cannibal kept some of Barnes' ideas ('Devoured by vermin' for example) but did not give him songwriting credit cos they re-wrote the lyrics... Barnes was fired because he wouldn't sing Alex or Paul's lyrics - Corpsegrinder did that.
      Chris Barnes said in the Cannibal DVD that he was fine being out of the band... The issues came after when he allegedly demanded compensation for his ideas on 'Vile' and a royalty for the use of the Cannibal Corpse logo which he had designed... The band refused. They also changed the logo from the one he had designed on the first 4 records by Cannibal Corpse... so, there were issues after the split.
      Eventually, they did settle their differences...

    • @bumface1810
      @bumface1810 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@sumonjamal1653 1) All I know is some songs on VILE share the same lines of lyrics as the counterpart on CTK. So either Barnes eventually collabed on the lyrics, or they ripped off his lyrics on VILE.
      2) I bought the DVD in 2008 and have watched it many times. I also spoke to Corpsegrinder in 2009 and he said the doc was them all being professional and both sides (Barnes and CC) giving credit to each other. I know what Barnes said on the doc- he was ‘so fuckin relived’. Again, I have seen a magazine interview from 95/96 where Barnes expressed disappointment about being fired and roughly said ‘I can’t believe they did that’. He was probably both relived and sightly bummed he didn’t get to finish the album.
      3) Barnes never copyrighted the original CC logo, he just asked for a royalties percentage if they were gonna continue to use it so they said no and redesigned it.

    • @sumonjamal1653
      @sumonjamal1653 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@bumface1810 1)The lyrics were different from the ones Barnes recorded for 'Vile'... so, it's apparent that the band used some of Barnes' ideas (The title 'Devoured by vermin'... but new lyrics) but he wasn't credited.
      2) U left out the part that Alex Webster talked about his part in the phone call axing Barnes... and Alex said that there was no arguing and Barnes seemed fine w/ it...
      Now obviously, there was some bitterness from Barnes being given the sack... some bruised ego... But that's to be expected.
      3) I never said Barnes 'copyrighted' the Cannibal Corpse logo - he designed it and like a business guy, he approached Cannibal's management about his 'severance' if u will when he was out of the band... Cannibal still owes him some royalties since they do perform his songs w/ Cannibal on tour and those r often included in DVD's... live releases.
      It's a very different situation from Sepultura (for example) where Max Cavalera will not allow his songs to be featured on a Sepultura documentary - not even the live versions.

    I've been sharing this with my death metal pals. Thank you for all the hard work you put in and money you shelled out accumulating those physicals. I'm not a collector but it was ultra satisfying for me to get a look at those graphic cassettes, when I got into CC, everything was all on CD, and Napster was up, so we just downloaded and burned everything (don't worry I have made it up to the Boyz in other income streams👍🏻) seeing those cassettes looks like something from alternate universe. I caught your live stream once, I will def try to tune in again, when can we look forward to seeing the corpse grinder part one the Jack era and corpse grinder part 2 pat era corpse grinder part 3 Erik era lol jk? Not kidding 😂
    Thank you again, I told my friends over at the Tampa Morgue Podcast that you did a better job documenting the Chris years than Metal Blade did in Centuries of Torment... They dropped the ball by not getting a fresh Bob Rousay interview.... Really made Alex look like a dick which everyone knows couldn't be further from the truth.

      Sickening Metamorphasis is my favorite track on that album. Every song on that album gives me a mental picture of the album cover like some sci-fi gore laden horror film. Actually, every CC album makes me picture the album cover with their songs. I guess Vincent Locke does create the album covers based on the music, and the lyrical direction, so it makes sense. For example, when I listen to Meathook Sodomy from Butchered At Birth, I mentally picture two zombies dissecting a pregnant corpse with Barnes being the voice of zombies, lol.

    I feel like this is the exact video I've been waiting for since I got into Corpse back in 2008 just a deep dive on Barnes era and all the drama that ensued there. Even as a deep diver there was some stuff in here I wasn't aware of due to the fact I didn't read the Burnes book yet. I just will say that there were accusations on Metal Archives forum that Chris was stealing money from the band and while I never saw proof the fact Rob said he was sleeping in his own hotel room shows that may or may not have been true. I also like how you point out that Barnes vocal troubles started showing early and best example is Eats Moscow Alive. During Hammer Smashed Face he sounds savage as fuck but if you listen to/watch everything they released his vocal strain really picks up as it goes on. Hell you can even hear the bad technique on full display in the Hammer Smashed Face vocal track. With that said I can't imagine the stomach turning anxiety they must have all had when in the process of firing Barnes with not only wondering how fans would react but how the label would as well.

    Chuck Schuldiner of Death was a genius... but we know he was erratic and often very particular about his music. U can watch the Death documentary online to see how many musicians he fired from Death... We now know that Chuck was eventually diagnosed w/ cancer in the brain - it's earlier manifestation was what likely contributed to his histrionic behavior. He had to be cared for by his family before his passing.
    Guitarist James Murphy was in Death (and Obituary) and he was diagnosed w/ a brain tumor around 2000 and it had affected his life negatively - he was homeless and acting weird until his family stepped in and doctors discovered that he had cancer. He said he made peace w/ Chuck Schuldiner before he died at age 33... Thankfully, James Murphy recovered.

      I don't think that there's any evidence that his pontine glioma (a cancer more associated with children oddly enough), affected his thought process, as they are more located near the brain stem than the cerebrum itself. If you're wondering why he went through so many musicians, it was more a matter of it being his vision rather than writing music with other people. There are plenty of other bands that function like this, such as Megadeth or Annihilator. Also, he didn't die of cancer directly. He caught pneumonia while in recovery for its treatment, and since the treatment lowers your immune system, his body couldn't fight the virus effectively. I'm positive that his surviving relatives and friends would deny that his cancer damaged his thought process like it did with James Murphy.

      @@AlucardsQuest All conjecture and irrelevant at this point... Besides, we r not health experts.... neither were his family.
      We do know that Chuck was afflicted w/ cancer in the brain... that's what ultimately caused his untimely passing... We can only assume what caused his erratic behavior in life.

    So I grew up with all of this - I was raised on Thrash Metal and one day when I was about 15, I went to the mall and there were no more thrash metal albums, only death metal…it was weird. I’d pick up something and put it back because of the dumb band logo that I couldn’t decipher. Slayer was still cool, but the rest of them were gone. Death was the first band that hooked me in this new DM scene, they were the best, progressive death metal. Cannibal Corpse was rad in the Barnes’ Days. I went to a ton of shows and met a lot of bands and everyone said Barnes was a dick, so I think what he said about Chuck was just wrong. Everyone loved Chuck, who will always be the godfather of that genre and Barnes was jealous. Barnes was only relevant because Cannibal Corpse was fresh when they hit the scene. Real talk, their album artwork was 75% of their appeal back in the day, so they got that part right, no doubt. Butchered is their best and most brutal work ever - Barnes went downhill after that. We all made fun of his vocals on the CC albums after Butchered, though the next couple had some cool tunes.
    Oh yeah - Malevolent Creation was way better IMO, check out The Ten Commandments.
    - and NO ONE talks about Autopsy these days, nor did they talk about them then, but those guys deserve their own show. Much Love!

    Cannibal Corpse is just The metal band for me, i was like 20 years old listening only to Basic Metal like Metallica, Slayer, Slipknot, Thrash metal, heavy metal etc etc, but once i decided to step deeper into the genre and gave Cannibal Corpse a chance since everything from Death metal And further weas out of my Musical Radar and honestly i avoided it since i was very into screaming vocals and Classics, but When i decided to Pick Cannibal Corpse most infamous album, Tomb of the mutilated... OH BOY, Everything changed DRASTICALLY... The heaviest Things i was listening before getting into it was Reign In Blood, and IOWA, But this album just Blew my mind, The guitars sound and riffing were 100x Heavier than anything else i was listening, the Cavernous and Brtual feeling the music had, was in another level and the vocals just amazed me, i definitely was prepared for it at that moment... It also contributed on the fact that i wa sliving rough times and i wasnt getting enough brutal music from the current music i was listening to... Cannibal Corpse just showed me and entire new wall of metal to explore and then i just went progrerssively into the most f.cked up music i could ever listen.. Nowdays Using Molesting the Decapitated as Sleep music is normal to me to put an example hahahaha

    I discovered CC on the gallery of suicide album. So it has a special significance for me. Also because of the concept of the album & the artwork in general. Alex Webster is btw one of the best, most underrated bass players ever. The low production of the Barnes albums had a certain charm to it however. I respect the Barnes era but don't prefer it.

    Personally I really only listen to the Chris Era Cannibal Corpse era. I like all 4 albums but do prefer Butchered and Tomb more.
    On Chris' vocals, I don't really get the hate for it. I do metal vocals and I know kind of what he's doing, I can do what he does. I just don't get how people say it deteriorated in 1994 but hasn't changed for 30 years. I think he said he wanted to sound more clear and slow the music down and he just does vocals different but I don't think they sound bad at all.
    For Six Feet Under, I like most of the main records. Graveyard classics aren't great, I don't think metal vocals fit classic rock songs. but for main albums Haunted, Warpath, and Maximum Violence are good, True Carnage is fantastic, Bringer of Blood is really good, 13, Commandment, and Death Rituals are good, Undead is a top tier album with Unborn right behind it, Crypt of the Devil and Torment are good but not as good as Undead or Unborn, Nightmares of the Decomposed is the only record so far that isn't great in the vocal department but from what I hear from the newest album Killing for Revenge his voice is back to being the same it always was. The lyrics for the songs on Killing for Revenge so far aren't amazing but the vocals are largely unchanged from The Bleeding. I always thought SFU is fine and I don't know why people shit on it so much.
    I think Cannibal Corpse would've sounded fine based off Created to Kill and SFU. Of course the internal strife that was there wouldn't have made it work but I don't think it's Chris' vocals. Just explain to me what deterioration happened between, lets say, She was Asking For it & Know-Nothing Ingrate. I don't hear any.

    You're newbie-ness is shining on this one. As someone old enough to be twins with the rock in your yard, I don't see or hear what it is that makes you think eaten and tomb are a lot alike. That's a strange comparison. Eaten is mid pace, no blast beats. Not one. It's thrashy and catchy. Tomb is blast driven except the parts that are straight slow grooving which switch to each other on a dime. No building up or down, switch flip changes. Let's not forget the difference in vocals.i don't even have to explain. Anyone who's ever heard both albums knows. Underdevelop thrash voice vs the first ever all gutteral from another universe voice. And songwriting wise both albums stand out but especially tomb. There's no versus, chorus's, or a single bridge anywhere. It's just organized chaos with barely anything repeating. As opposed to the bleeding which is specifically designed for verse/chorus/verse/chorus.
    BTW I've been there since day one and you're the only one who says Barnes started SFU. I have read and watched many interviews where even Barnes tells the story of Allan needing a singer. That was a thousand percent a band Allan West started by himself. G'day cutie pie. Hope I put some thinking material in your grey matter....

    I feel like you’re adopting the opinions of the edgelords in terms of saying the lyrics on The Bleeding are more PG.
    For me the lyrics on that album are a lot more psychological and mature, getting into the minds of serial killers or supernatural nightmares instead of just relying on cartoony gore (EBTL).
    Also how come you didn’t critique the Created to Kill demos?!
