By the year 2035, NASA plans to send humans to Mars. But it would be about a nine-month trip with our current rocket technology. However, in the not-so-distant future, we could be replacing chemical engines with nuclear thermal propulsion. That would take you to Mars in just three months. What are the risks of using nuclear propulsion? How would it work? Have we used nuclear energy in space before?

Anti-matter rockets are theoretically the best but I think they will always be science fiction, I agree with Michio Kaku that it will never be possible to make a rocket with it. If you want to see a realistic fission rocket concept watch "liquid plutonium rocket". The video also has info on the constant 1g acceleration method, with this a ship can get to Alpha Centauri in 3.6 ship/ 7.3 Earth years and have gravity the whole way (and that includes turning the ship around half way and decelerating). A 10 ton ship would need a mere 10 tons of continuous thrust.

The rocket idea needs to go, it can be nuclear powered but the explosive engine needs to go, no one wants to ride a nuclear bomb into space

the stargate series used the same thing for multiple types of engines in their space craft that they developed(albeit its scifi but the science behind most of it was real, at least the theories they used)
