    STORYLINE:
Cheering crowds of Iraqis welcomed British forces in Basra on Sunday evening after the largest military incursion yet into the southern Iraqi city.
In a day-long operation, British troops and marines said they had destroyed the Ba'ath Party there and pounded the headquarters of the Fedayeen militia loyal to President Saddam Hussein.
Three British soldiers died during the attack, the British Ministry of Defence said later on Sunday.
The British military says it appears Basra's Ba'ath Party leadership has collapsed.
It was the deepest British forces had moved into the southern city, Iraq's second largest with a population of
    1.3 (M) million.
Previously, British forces have remained on the outskirts of town and staged raids and incursions from those positions.
British pool reports said the final five-mile (8 kilometre) push into the centre of the city was quick and without resistance.
British troops and marines found the streets of Iraq's second city lined with civilians cheering and waving.
