After the car crash took his arm, Rick Allen came back to the studio where the band had been recording. Nobody ever talked about replacing him or what they were going to do. They were just happy he was back and he'd just go into a room by himself....and spent his days figuring out how he could drum with one arm - setting up to drum with his feet, and practicing day after day. The band admits now, they were just happy he was doing something, but in the back of their minds of course he could never do what he once did. One day he called them into the room and proceeded to play one of their hits in their entirety on his new setup using his feet. By the end all of them were in tears.
One of my ex firefighter colleagues in Sheffield was a massive Def Leppard fan, he was in charge of the first fire appliance on scene at Ricks accident. He was almost in tears when they cut him out of the wreckage but elated that he mastered the art of one arm drumming.
Great, now I’m crying on a bus on a Wednesday morning. I’ve been catching up with these guys over the past few days and am amazed at how good they still sound. This story makes me love them even more.
That’s the reason they are the all time best- the fact that they didn’t give up on him, they just adapted and made it work- even better than before to be honest.
@@saragrant9749 Great comment and excellent point🙌
True friendship
How on EARTH can you still sound THIS good after SO many years?
They take care of them selves, talent and use technology to their advantage. Like using effects and there live mixing is so good
Vocal exercises.
Practice, teamwork, good tech's & being guys not a bunch of egotistical maniacs.
well............................IT'S DEF LEPPARD
what can i tell ya \m/ \m/
i still take 2 lumps of sugar in my coffee to this day
@@Me37368 I’m pretty sure Joe had a surgery on his vocal cords at one point but idk, I’m just happy he still sounds great, saw them in 2018 and it was the best I’ve ever seen of them
Rick allen is 57 years old with one arm and still he is killing it.What's your excuse?
I'm paraplegic.
I'm not Rick Allen
I suck at drums even with two arms.
Swamped watching def Leppard concerts on TH-cam
@@pattywatty5266 if he wants to impress me, he needs to do two pushups.
The fact that they still sound this good after so many years is genuinely extremely impressive. As close to the records as it gets. Just like AC/DC.
Agree they should tour together!!
Phil admits that they tuned a full step down so they could still sing their songs.
Absolutely agree Collixion ! Saw them in 1987 in London on their Animal Tour, I was blown away at how much they sounded like the CD I had !! Infact, better ! Love AC/DC too, have a butchers at the Live At River Plate concert in 2009, the audience in Argentina are just incredible too ! Cheers, rock on !
Better IMO Phil is the power source for this band and his tone and playing are better than ever
They did Def Leppard were the support act too AC/DC saw them twice together
This group even at this age would beat 90% of current rock bands
What current rock bands?
is there some?(sorry forgot that bit)
Correct

@@petelewisNZ lets be honest 99.9 of currect gruops
All of them are 60 plus and they use no autotune with still sounding good, legendary virtuosos.
And no back tracking
What metal uses auto tune though, to be fair?
@@JoeyLevenson false metal
All of them besides Rick Allen. He’s only 57
Edit: I guess Viv is only 58 also
Are they really playing... im not convinced.
They are f'ing PROFESSIONALS! Sounds amazing.
The drummer blows my mind? How??! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🔥🔥
That is a story worthy of hearing.
Loads of documentaries all of them excellent
Rick Allen: "It's just a flesh wound."
Feet and back track.
An absolute iron clad determination not to let his friends down, and talent. So much talent.
He has a special set. Foot replace arm🙂 he still awesum. I seen them in Vancouver Bc
These guys still rock. Listening to def leppard now is just like listening to them in the 80s. Living time capsules.
Especially Phil Collen; I swear the dude hasn't visibly aged since 1998.
@@ianrarity3783 During quarantine if you saw some of his videos he was making, he grew a beard and it was gray but that’s the only thing that makes him like old, the second he shaved it he looked like he got a lot younger
@@ianrarity3783 g
Phil is 62 years. You can't be 62 and have that body!
thats illegal
It's called TRT
he may have a body but the voice is crapping out....
It's easy with bags of money, a personal trainer and 10 hours a day to do nothing but play guitar and work out.
@@rockdinosaur666 It's very doable. But doesn't make it any easier.
England really has created some of the best Rock bands in the World in the top 10 :D ;)
So many, that Def Leppard would not even even warrant an honorable mention
Their drummer is huge inspiration.
Rick allen is such a brilliant drummer
Joe Elliot sounds great at his age. Not just talking the lyrics because he can't hit the notes anymore. He's really singing them and on key.
I got to see Def Leppard in augest 26 2018 in Columbus Ohio where the football stadium 🏟.
Is at the Def Leppard concert was awesome 😎 but it was very loud and some people screaming during the Def Leppard concert
Rock on 🤘 to one of my favorite band on earth 🌎 dude
The drummer has one arm O.o damn, so much respect for him, the rest of the band is awesome aswell
Accident took his one arm.
Even though, he really didn't let it get him down. He really came into his own after the accident. He just said, "find me a way to keep jamming."
Look at the Rick Allen...he is a cure for depression and anxiety
HELL YEAH! Motivation at its best!
That was so true
Sound Engineer master clase...Awesome
This was an absolute drop-dead, stone cold demi-god performance! These guys still rock as though it was 1988! So thankful I grew up during this era. Thank you Def Leppard for shining so bright for so long!
I wanted to make a comment to this effect. Your words nailed it! 🤘
These guys got no business being this good after this long.
Business got no good being this long after these guys
theyre to legendary to stop rocking theyll rock forever even after theyre gone! even if its through my sound system
Great to see Monty Don still rocking.
Man they sound so good still. Ricks timing is unmatched
The best old rocker band to date.
Good to see Vivian Campbell. The albums he did with Dio, were some of the best rock guitar ever.
Same with Whitesnake before he joined Def Leppard
I saw these guys in concert during the Hysteria tour. One of the best concerts I've ever seen! As a fellow old fogie, I truly appreciate how well they just keep rocking!
The Def leppard rock band in the world in the 1980 and 2020 too
I just want to say. After a rock and roll life style for 45 years. VIV looks fregin amazing.
I’m 50 now and I still remember hanging out with my friends listening to Def Leppard driving down the street and that’s all that mattered back then
Rock n roll forever
Man that sound of that guitar is so crisp it rips, whole song sounds like the day they first sing it
If the 80s had Internet, This song would have broke the internet
Saw them on the Hysteria tour two nights in Portland Oregon 1987. Def Leppard is the real deal.
the fact that they still sound the same after 40 years is just amazing and i would deff pay to see the one and only def leopard
FREAKIN SONG ROCKS!!!!!
Def Leppard forever ❤️
Cried straight watching the accident scene
Still the best Still a headliner Still sells out stadiums
One of the greatest band from the Hair Metal decade. And to have one of the best drummers with only one arm, Def Lep are one of the all time greats.
0:15 the way they played the riff there sounds so badass
Saw them in denmark warm up for Bon jovi, and Def Leppard stole the fucking show, they should have been the main name
Words can not describe the amazing talent these guys have - even after all these years they still get people on their feet screaming out these songs. I’m so thankful to be one of those screaming fans
TOTALLY GREAT! Wonderful to see Rick behind the drums. Remembering his caraccident, where he lost his arm. Younger than me, still beating those drumskins! Total love!
Que buena banda loco y como suena 🤘🤘🤘🎶🎶🎶
Each one of them brings something so amazing to this group. Seriously, I didn't always recognize this when I was young (and dumb), but every single one of them is sexy, confident, skilled in their craft, and they've really matured into excellent musicians. Love me some Leppard!
Y does any1 have to get old. These yummies..yyyy
I'm 28, from Germany. You guys are my whole life
This performance puts to shame so many bands. It was excellent
They need to perform in the next Super Bowl...they actually still sound good
I'm glad to see Phil is using his old guitar with a pointed headstock.
Vivian is honestly one of the most underrated guitarists in history. The dude is truly something special.
And he knows how to sing.
@@JB-lp9xr And yet not many from the modern era even know his name. Sad.
Def Leppard what can you say, they haven't changed at all. After all these years they sound better than they ever did.
CRIKEY!!! They sound just as good now as they did back then...not many bands can do that! but that drum set up back in the day was sooo inovative that its used worldwide now and what a bloody riipa inspiration to everyone!!
Is it bad that I like this version more than the studio one ?
I just love seeing legendary groups in their late 50s/60s pull out fantastic performances and make songs from 35 years ago still sound as fresh and cool as if they were just out of their last album.
Wow!! They still have amazing vocals!!
This guy has the best voice in rock!
those guitars are kick ass - such a great mix
Classic Rock so good
Saludos desde Argentina, provincia San Juan 💪🙏
After Al these years they still got it
La banda con mas lealtad que vi, siempre previlegiaron bancar a un miembro como a un amigo incondicional y ademas siguen sonando impecablemente!!
sueñan tan bien ahora como en los ochentas
These guys definitely have not lost their talent !brilliant performance !!😎
They sure have lost their talent. They have lost Steven Maynard and Robert John, without whom they have been unable to write a memorable riff or craft a decent melody in the worst album run of any rock band in history - 1992 to 2021 (and counting). Adrenalize, Slang, Euphoria, X, Yeah, Sparkle, DL. The fact you are still listening to this in 2021 should tell you everything you need to know. Doubtless they'll be back in 2021 to milk @40: Viva Pyromania; and then again in 2027 with Dystopia: Def Leppard @50. Hall of Lame
Phil is so underated as a guitarist... simply incredible.
I really hope there is no Taped vocals playing
Even more underrated as a striper!
What a classic
SuperAwesome!!! better than most of 80's bands today!
That was amazing! Def Leppard was the first band I ever saw that restored my faith in live music. I saw many bands from the 80s that didn't deliver when they went on stage. Great performers!!!
This band have the gift of love
Good music
They still sound Amazing 🤩
They are a Real band!
A real deal!
They can write music, play instruments etc not just sing.
Don't need to take long breaks just after 2-4 years of stage.
A real treat and a rare era as there is no other like them from the UK when they are gone.
They still sound pretty damn good but what's truly amazing is how the hot chicks in the audience don't appear to have aged a day since the 80s! ;-)
Sure would LOVE to go to one of their concerts. Plus, I have ALOT of respect for this band for the way they don't hold losing an arm against the drummer.
why in gods name would they hold that against him? It wasn't his fault....
underrated band who hold high the hard n' heavy for decades and survied things it broke the most of line up... KEEP ROLLING, DEAF LEOPARD!
Love Def Leppard.....New Years Eve 2020, who is listening to bring in 2021?????
@Joe Elliott Thank you so much for the reply!!! I have listened to Def Leppard for so many hours over the years since you all began and will continue to always do so!!! I can put the headphones on to listen and it gets me upbeat and feeling good!!! Thank you, Joe!!!
@Joe Elliott Been a fan since you all began and I live in Florida.
That guitar sound is ..GIGANTIC ❤
HELL NO... How on earth do these guys still sound this good at this age. wow, just wow.
Best drummer in the world. Is a one armed drummer
before he lost his arm, he always one of the best drummer in rock scene

Somebody please convince me they are really playing live this good.
They are definitely playing live no backing track aswell
If you need convincing listen to the Hysteria album.
It's different but not by much, vocals drop an octave but that's it. In 40 years you can allow a little tweak, other than that, they're just awesome
Damn, i'm impressed! This is almost as the studio version!
amazing they sound great!
Real music by real musicians, no autotune bs here
Brilliant, they can still blast it out, pour brilliance 🇬🇧
Form is temporary, CLASS IS PERMANENT
def has a time machine
Real music stands the test of time. How many bands of today will be doing their thing 40 years from now, much less this good?
I will. Also the current pop music is trash. I will bring rock back. Plus Def Leppard are the best.
My band is called Kryophoenix. I am 15. We haven't released anything yet but give a few years and we will. Already got a bunch of riffs and solos. So yeah hope you enjoy us in the future.
@@ryancampbell5246 how’s the band doing?
Awesome love seeing the originals still singing and sound the exact same 👍😍🤘
Just noticed the drummer had one arm bro thats soo cool
Yeah, car crash in 1984 or so. Wrecked his new corvette.
I love rock and roll 🤘😜🤘
These guys still got it!! They rule!!! Long live Def Leppard!!! 🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻💪💪💪
Legends never die
Savage is the most beautiful man on earth..I love him.
Honestly Rick Allen plays the drums better with one hand than most two handed drummers, extraordinary.
That guy's really proud of his muscles
he didn't have them back when they were popular
