I'll bet that 3.0L turbo is quite zippy and fun to drive. Having said that, there are two things about the Explorer ST that give me pause. First, I completely agree with you, Steve, that the screen in the infotainment system is underutilized giving is 'portrait' screen orientation. The back up view should be full screen, or at least offer multi-camera views. Second, the storage area in back has an odd design. Okay, so it has a cover over a deeper well that you can remove. But when you put the cover on, you get these two recesses on either side. I'm not sure I like that design choice. But I'm being a bit persnickety. Still looks like a great SUV.
The 3.0L is a blast! I think I've said the same thing about the camera view since I first saw the screen. A full screen backup camera and full screen CarPlay/Android Auto would have looked so good on this setup. Haha glad I'm not the only one who thought the rear storage tray was a bit odd
There should be covers for the sides in the back.... don't know why it's not in this one. I also didn't get the portrait radio I got the landscape. It's its smaller but better then the landscape.
Right?! I'm so surprised that Ford didn't try to utilize the space.. I'm sure they must have heard from owners, and all the videos I've ever shot on it, calling out how it could be improved. Have you done any aftermarket upgrades on your ST or are you running stock?

Great video, and no doubt it performs well. Mine has a front end clunk that sounds like a bad ball joint or strut. Dealer denied any issues and it's going back for round two today after being escalated. I thought I was just being picky until I did a little research on it and found that many are saying the same thing. We will see how it gets handled today, but I am guessing they will say it's normal for this vehicle because of the sport suspension and 21" tires. Let's just say if any of my other vehicles were making this noise I would start replacing parts. But they do have a loaner ready for me to go, so we will see.
Has the dealer looked at the sway bar or cv boot to see if there's an issue there? If they are giving you a hassle at that dealer you can take it to another one for warranty claims/servicing. I'd be curious to know what the issue is when the eventually diagnose it in case other people mention having the same issue
@@CarsWithSteve I took it in yesterday for the 2nd time after it was escalated. The service manager went on a ride with me and acknowledged the hollow thudding noise over the slow speed rough surfaces / bumps. @@CarsWithSteve I got it back this afternoon and while they were removing the right front strut for replacement they noticed the upper bearing had separated. So they installed a new RF strut, upper bearing, strut mount, and did an alignment. I can hardly believe it, but this seems to have done the trick and no one is more surprised than I. Reading through the invoice it says “Found SSM 52405 for front strut noise and vehicle falls within build date of SSM criteria. Ah figured that may be the case so good to hear they made the fix! SSM should have been the first thing the dealership checked when you told them what the issue was.. it's odd they didn't think of that until it was brought in this time. Enjoy the fixed ride!
The Explorer has the larger tablet style screen in some packages but it's not standard in most trims. The 2025 Explorer is getting a refresh with a screen that's closer to the new Escape
I just recently started browsing vehicles again. Did Ford get the transmission, electrical, and other issues straightened out yet that the 2020-2022 models of the Explorers and Explorer ST’s were plagued with?
@@CarsWithSteveAwesome, thanks for the response. I may need to test drive one at some point. Any thoughts on the newer Explorer ST compared with the newer Nissan Pathfinder (especially the Rock Creek) and Jeep Grand Cherokee?
The ST is going to be way more powerful than the Pathfinder and G/C. The AWD system on all of them is good but depending on which version of the G/C you go for you'd get a slight edge there. The Pathfinder is well balanced all around. Towing wise the Explorer has the lowest max rating, with the G/C having the highest of the 3

The odd one with a feed line leak but even NHTSA doesn't have many owner complaints for any component failure. Low numbers when you look at the number of units sold
@CarsWithSteve ok thanks. Still on the fence about these. This Gen has a laundry list of recalls and CSPs as well. Its to bad. Dodge and GM arent much better.
The 2025 Explorer should have already started hitting dealership floors but Ford is hanging onto them to ensure the best possible QC before they're released. Hoping that means they're going to be even better this year
If your ST has the 360 camera and the larger tablet screen it should automatically show off the overhead view on the right.. You can also try a screen soft reboot by pressing and holding the right seek button and power button for 5-10 seconds and see if that does it
How do you turn the lights off for drive in movie theaters? I have an older Explorer, and am looking at getting a 2024 ST. I have never been able to fully turn off all the lights while keeping the radio on, and have to hang the floor mats over the headlights while at the Drive in.
@@CarsWithSteve But when you turn on accessory mode, the daytime running lights turn on. In other cars engaging the emergency brake will disable the DRL, but not in my Explorer. Any thoughts?
Just got mine this weekend as a surprise. The 21 inch tires to me is ridiculous, should have just made them 20 or 22's. Gonna spend a lot more money on 21 inch tires since they're so odd
Great surprise! The ST has 20" wheels standard... the 21" are optional so you could always swap with an existing ST owners or look aftermarket and sell your current set
@@CarsWithSteve we have discussed that already 😂 might be cheaper in the long run to buy new rims and tires. Wish mine just came with the standard size. But ah well
The only negative about the Explorer for me is visibility. It's difficult to see through the side windows when backing up or changing lanes. I chose the Flex Ecoboost when I needed a newer car.
I've only had it for five months. We had to get something that was easy for my elderly mother to get into. My only concern is the gas mileage. Wish it was more economical.
Right? It's such an odd thing that it's only part of the screen. That larger screen is technically optional in the ST though and the new 2025 is a completely redesign that features the new Ford Android OS that supports full screen
No CD - player obsolete and it tends to shut off if van idles for too long why? Steering wheel a bit small. Trunk a bit small unless one turns down back seats-:))
Can't remember the last time the Explorer had a CD player but do a backup and transfer it to USB sticks! The vehicle has a 30 min max idle which can be turned off in the infotainment system through Settings --> Vehicle --> 30 Min Max Idle
I wouldn’t say the best, top 3 sure. Best would be either track hawk or that hellcat Durango. It’s fun especially with some mods, but fords build quality is atrocious.
I found your video very helpful. I purchased a 2024 Explorer ST last week. I have the equipment package 401a, credit 360 camera and hot spot. Two questions, do I have the front sensing system? Also, I have the front camera under the Ford emblem and cameras under the side review mirrors but no button inside the SUV. Can you get the 360 camera hooked up?
Glad it helped! If it's the 360 credit there are modules missing so it's not a simple hook up. I personally haven't seen or heard of it installed aftermarket if it's missing from the factory. You should have the front sensing system in the Explorer ST 401a pack though
thought I’d ask and thanks for responding. Actually used to live in Va. Hampton Roads area. As to Canada we’d spend summers at my aunt’s cottage in Southampton ON. Good times. Keep up the awesome reviews!@@CarsWithSteve
Hopefully within the next 2 months. Ford has paused releasing the 2025 right now to ensure that recalls from the current generation aren't following through
Looking at almost that EXACT truck, black on black ST with the 401A (ST High) package. Your enthusiasm is a BIT excessive though.. it would be nice to hear a bit more about what you DIDN'T like about the vehicle. Especially one I'm about to drop 60 grand on.
I'm enthusiastic because I enjoy the car... I covered off the things I wasn't a fan of which isn't much. The interior is a bit dated (being upgraded for the 2025 model) and I don't like how the infotainment system with the larger tablet style screen doesn't have the rearview camera or CarPlay/Android Auto sizing utilized properly. Otherwise.. no complaints. The ST is a solid ride
Why would the things he doesn’t like affect your decision to buy. Drive it and make your decision based on what you like/dislike. This is just a review like all the others. It’s your money, spend it on what you like. I’m getting one, reviews be damned!! My only question is do I wait for the 2025 refresh or not🤔
How short are you or how low is that driver’s seat? There are 0 issues with visibility from the screen while driving but there’s a refresh coming for the 2025 that moves it lower and changes the dash layout
I think this is as far as anyone should go.. Not spending any more than the$72k MSRP,... Remember why we are buying and using a such fur e.g. get groceries, other kinds of shooting, carry good clubs to course etc..99 percent will never go'off pavement'.... What does spending an extra$100k get us really??
It's definitely going to depend on the person, their own tastes and budget.. For someone making $250k/year, getting a more expensive car is a drop in the bucket but the budget question is absolutely something everyone should ask themselves before buying any car. So true about off pavement as well.. there are some many Broncos, Wranglers and other off-road rides that never really see dirt
A full review like this won't be available until closer to June because they haven't officially shipped to dealers yet. Media won't have full access until sometime in May
Ford so much wanted to refresh a perfect looking explorer and st that they overdone it, with exagerated non fluid front grill, stepped head lights(side view) and horrific wheels mimicing gls mercedes, I had a 2021 that i sold at a great re sale value, missed it too much got a 2023…. And for 850$ i got the Ford Performance tune; 430hp (underated) and 467 pds-ft Not voiding warranty when loaded at the dealer, no other modification required, just 93 octane, The result 0-60 in 4.1 seconds, That is 100k plus sports car and german sport suv territory, sq7 glc43 amg, ect🎉
Good call on cashing in on the resale! Ford Performance is amazing for their tunes and $850 is solid for that bump in power. The 2025 is different for sure and I think the displayed wheels on the 2025 ST are going to be the pricer optional ones. Hoping it looks good in person though 🤞
For power or all around? If it has the base 3.3L V6 engine.. The ones where the department upgrades to the 3.0L twin tubo is a night and day difference in performance
I’d say they are pretty good cop cars atleast with the 3.0TT, I’ve autocrossed one of these so I know you can easily do the dangerous maneuvers police need to do, they do great off road as well so no more dirt bikes getting away. With a couple simple bolt on mods and a tune you will have little issue catching skat packs and hellcats that attempt to flee. They also aren’t too bad to sit in for 6-8 hours at a time.
No they don't... Minimum manufacturer's recommendation for almost all Ford vehicles is 87 octane, with the Mustang GT500 and F150 Raptor being the outlier requiring at least 91. Ford engines are tested for power output and economy using 94 octane. They'll all run fine with 87, as per every owner's manual, but they'll run the best with 91+ There are some Ford vehicles that would be best to use 91+ which are the Explorer ST, Edge ST, Bronco 2.7L or 3.0L, F150 3.5L H/O + 5.2L SuperCharged (or when towing), Mustang GT or Expedition but they'll all still run fine on 87
Honestly, there are so many absurd things in this car: low quality plastics, stitches looking bad, awful seats coverage quality and on top of that - iPad 😂 No, it's insane. The only thing I like is that ugly look and the engine.
It's a turd. Little baby 3L won't get out it's own way. It's not a Mustang, or a F150, or a Bronco. It doesn't do anything well. Just mediocre. I hate mine.
It's not meant to be a Mustang, F150 or Bronco.. I think you're the first ST owner I've heard from that doesn't actually like their car. If you want better performance have you looked at stage 1 ECU tunes, whipple or cooling upgrades?
@@CarsWithSteve I have some mods in it. 13.17@99.8. This pig won't 100 in the 1/4 as I watched the Trackhawk tail lights drive off into the sunset. I hooked my trailer to it, 9.8 mpg. Save a bit of weight.. but the rails themselves wouldn't create much of a drag.. if you had crossbars it would probably we worth taking them off when not in use
The 2025 ST update is......yawn. It's very underwhelming. I was expecting so much more. The Wheels are blah, and they should have been '22's. No HEAD'S UP DISPLAY, still. Get a deal on the '24's if you're in the market.
The infotainment makes the 2025 model. I was just in a '24 Nautilus with the next gen tech and using the Android OS is leaps ahead of flexibility compared to the current gen Sync3. I'd sacrifice the HUD for the map in cluster and BlueCruise that they added

How do you turn the lights off for drive in movie theaters? I have an older Explorer, and am looking at getting a 2024 ST. I have never been able to fully turn off all the lights while keeping the radio on, and have to hang the floor mats over the headlights while at the Drive in.
Using the light selector switch to the left of the steering wheel.. move it to the top "O" setting turns the lights off
@@CarsWithSteve But when you turn on accessory mode, the daytime running lights turn on. In other cars engaging the emergency brake will disable the DRL, but not in my Explorer. Any thoughts?
I'll have a look next time I'm in an Explorer and will let you know what I find!
Should be in the vehicle settings to turn off the DRLs
@@msokes9 Thanks. I’ll give it a try.
What’s the maximum driving range on a full tank with the trim you reviewed?
Depends on your driving habits.. it's a 17.9 gallon (54.1 litres). With 20 mpg combined it would be around 360 miles (570 km) per tank
Why didn't you know that the rear cargo tray flips over for a hard cover instead of the carpeted side?
That cargo tray can be flipped but isn't meant to flip because the opposite side doesn't have a grab handle.. and it's ugly AF on the other side
@@CarsWithSteve It is actually meant to be used as a hard surface if needed. Another reviewer pointed out that functionality very well.
But ah well
well hopefully you enjoy the car regardless. Have some fun in sport mode until you replace those tires ;)
The only negative about the Explorer for me is visibility. It's difficult to see through the side windows when backing up or changing lanes. I chose the Flex Ecoboost when I needed a newer car.
Ah the old Flex! Have you seen new Hyundai Santa Fe?
@@CarsWithSteve I have, but you can't replace the "Quick Brick". I can't believe the response of this car. She has so much pedal!
So true! Ford did such a great job with the EcoBoost engines. Has the Flex given you any issues at all since you've owned it?
I've only had it for five months. We had to get something that was easy for my elderly mother to get into. My only concern is the gas mileage. Wish it was more economical.
I use android auto all the time and the fact that it only uses half the screen is a big no no.
No rear camera washer??? What an amazing upgrade 🤔
The camera washer was taken out back in 2022 and honestly... it wasn't the greatest anyways
I have mine best suv hands down
Nice! Are you running stock or have you done any upgrades?
Thank you for your help. @@CarsWithSteve
anytime!
Seems Ford is skipping over 24 models since they are taking orders for 25 year to be released in Q2. Early this time of year.
25 order bank isn’t open just yet but 24 does have a short run this year because of the update. The Aviator is in the same boat
I have an Aunt Mary and Uncle Gordon with a last name Grey. My parents are from Canada and my Aunt grew up in Tweed / Belleville.
Don't know them unfortunately, my folks were from North Ontario and Virginia. Would have been wild if there was a connection though!
thought I’d ask and thanks for responding. Actually used to live in Va. Hampton Roads area. As to Canada we’d spend summers at my aunt’s cottage in Southampton ON. Good times. Keep up the awesome reviews!@@CarsWithSteve
Anytime! Southampton is a nice drive, been up in Tobermory a bit further north a few times in the last couple years too! Cheers
When can we expect your 2025 Ford Explorer Review?
My only question is do I wait for the 2025 refresh or not🤔
Am zonking the infotainment screen I can't see my self driving a vehicle with an infotainment screen blocking the windshield...
How short are you or how low is that driver’s seat? There are 0 issues with visibility from the screen while driving but there’s a refresh coming for the 2025 that moves it lower and changes the dash layout
I'm waiting for the 2025. Glad I didn't just go get this one
The 2025 interior looks great! Same power in the ST but it looks like towing is taking a hit
3 liter 4 cyl or is it a 6, you forgot to say.
It's a 6 in the ST, 4 banger in the 2.3L. Thanks for pointing that out
3 liter what? V6? Inline 6? Plastic 2 cylinder?
Ah the one detail I missed. Lol plastic
@@CarsWithSteve no worries thanks for video!
At least Ford being consistent in making very cheap interiors
Wait for the upgraded 2025.. finally going through an upgrade
@@CarsWithSteve When is it going to be up for a review?
A full review like this won't be available until closer to June because they haven't officially shipped to dealers yet. Media won't have full access until sometime in May
I can't stand the vertical tablet; luckily it is gone for 2025.
If they used the space better it could have worked but I agree with you on the 2025 refresh, looks way better
Todella kaunis auto on Ford Explorer st.2024 vuosi 💎 ja tv Petri Juhani saarvio 💙 ja minä olen 51 years mies 💖 ja minä olen auto Mies cars with Steve.
Kiitos Petri. Pidän todella myös ST:stä, teho on erinomainen. Jatka samaan malliin kanavallasi!
Ford so much wanted to refresh a perfect looking explorer and st that they overdone it, with exagerated non fluid front grill, stepped head lights(side view) and horrific wheels mimicing gls mercedes,
I had a 2021 that i sold at a great re sale value, missed it too much got a 2023….
And for 850$ i got the Ford Performance tune; 430hp (underated) and 467 pds-ft
Not voiding warranty when loaded at the dealer, no other modification required, just 93 octane,
The result 0-60 in 4.1 seconds,
That is 100k plus sports car and german sport suv territory, sq7 glc43 amg, ect🎉
Good call on cashing in on the resale! Ford Performance is amazing for their tunes and $850 is solid for that bump in power. The 2025 is different for sure and I think the displayed wheels on the 2025 ST are going to be the pricer optional ones. Hoping it looks good in person though 🤞
If only it wasnt $65k in canada.
Go for a 2021.. exact same specs for half the price
@@CarsWithSteve No kidding? That's actually a good idea as well!
AutoTrader has a few listed at about $40k with pretty low mileage. Not a bad deal for the performance
The car is gorgeous but the screen WTF , the design is so random
Haha it really is. Luckily they fixed it in the 2025 model
Gia lăn bánh 80000usd không
Ở việt nam nó có giá 80000usd à?
While the Explorer may be good for shopping for groceries, it absolutely sucks as a cop car. 🚓
Ford recommends premium in all their engines across the board.
No they don't... Minimum manufacturer's recommendation for almost all Ford vehicles is 87 octane, with the Mustang GT500 and F150 Raptor being the outlier requiring at least 91. Ford engines are tested for power output and economy using 94 octane. They'll all run fine with 87, as per every owner's manual, but they'll run the best with 91+
There are some Ford vehicles that would be best to use 91+ which are the Explorer ST, Edge ST, Bronco 2.7L or 3.0L, F150 3.5L H/O + 5.2L SuperCharged (or when towing), Mustang GT or Expedition but they'll all still run fine on 87
We don't want to see your face👎, we want to see the car👍
So... look at all the pretty pictures online instead 🤦♂️ 🤡
♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
🙏🙏
A lot of money for a lot of plastic.
I doubt many existing ST owners would agree with you
Honestly, there are so many absurd things in this car: low quality plastics, stitches looking bad, awful seats coverage quality and on top of that - iPad 😂 No, it's insane.
The only thing I like is that ugly look and the engine.
Tell me how you really feel
My GMC with 6L, same trailer, 12.2 mpg.
Handles corners like a dump truck. I gave it to the wife to drive. I went back to my SHO.
@@CarsWithSteve The Dodge comes with a blown V8. Ford knows where the bar is set, Waaay up there. Then they build a lump way down here. I shouldn't have to mod it. The tow package doesn't have a break controller. Why do they offer a trailering package then? With the trailer empty, is skids my trailer tires. Loaded, It trys to push me thru the intersection. Ford told me to buy a aftermarket unit. Really??? Second row center seat is fixed. Doesn't move with either seat. Smaller motor with a 10 speed trans, yet it gets worse milage then my SHO. Why? Handles like a school bus and stops like a fright train. Just throw some red paint on the calipers and call it a day? For fuc& sake, put the Mustang 4 piston calipers on it!! They have Coyote motors in stock, how about one of them in there? If Im buying a "performance" vehicle, I really don't care about gas milage. Boy, I could go on for half an hour. Its a big engineering POS.
Dont buy one. Run a way.
Roof rails, why get rid of them
Save a bit of weight.. but the rails themselves wouldn't create much of a drag.. if you had crossbars it would probably we worth taking them off when not in use
