      Damnit.
Glad I was able to see them for the last few minutes of that concert back in 1993. All my friends listened to nirvana. I found the Chieftains.
RIP Paddy. You gave this young teen something more uplifting than the dreck and misery that surrounded me, and has stayed with me all these years.

Excellent!!! They were a refined group. They were pros that didn't use gimmicks. They could also sit down in a pub session with musicians that wandered off the street. RIP Paddy, Martin, Derek.

We had finished our duty and were making our way through Dublin Airport Terminal , to our hotel. The PA system in the terminal was fantastic, so lifelike, as I recognised the music of the Chieftains. Then I heard the applause !! Following the sound, I unwittingly walked around a corner to find myself staring at the audience and just one front row seat left :). Over my right shoulder were the Chieftains. In full uniform , trying not to look shocked, I took my seat, ( I took my hat off ) and thoroughly enjoyed the inaugural Boil the Breakfast Early concert . It was fantastic.
Now I’m going to watch this video again.

Patty Maloney inspired me to learn the tin whistle, and also the pipes... This show was the first time I SAW someone play a bagpipe, although I was eventually taught to play the GHB, I'd still love to learn to Uilleann pipes someday. Such a lovely octopus.

RIP Paddy Maloney, I missed his death. I live in France, so it's not too surprising. IMO, Paddy was the best of the pipers. And I've seen Seamus Ennis play at the Royal Albert Hall... I've followed the Chieftains since legendary British DJ John Peel started playing their music in the early 70's.

Paddy was a great musical soul, who could get the sound of life out of a penny tin whistle, and even more out of the Uillann pipes. And he was in good company in the Chieftains.; brilliant all.

Fell in love with the Chieftans when I checked out a record from Atlanta Public Library in the '70's. Still listening to them, I expanded my music over the years and became familiar with more than just my family's Irish side. I went to their concerts and my friends' son played with them on his fiddle and concertina once. Did they break up after Derek's death? I know a priest who looks a lot like Paddy. I doubt if he knows how to play bagpipes.

There's a wee story that Billy Connolly used to tell about the night The Chieftans, The Dubliners and Nazareth played a triple bill at the Glasgow Apollo. All the bouncers' leave was cancelled that evening, and, apparently, Paddy and co. drank them all under the table.

Is there some place I can buy a decent audio (or video) version of THIS SPECIFIC medley. My favorite piece is the middle tune - Mabel Kelly featuring Paddy Moloney on the tin whistle. All the other versions I have seen Matt Molloy is featured in Mabel Kelley on the Irish Flute. I would really like to buy this version if I can find it and/or figure what if any album it is on.

    • @douglashadden2172

Hi Gary - I don't think that this particular medley was ever recorded. Best I can do is to tell you that "Morgan Magan" is on "Chieftains 4", the other 2 feature in a medley on "Chieftains 5".

    • @douglashadden2172

A type of bagpipes used in Irish traditional music, known as "uilleann pipes".

    • @dmccarthy7171

"uilleann" being the Irish for elbow, which is what pumps the air in place of the lungs used to inflate bagpipes

I think 1987 or 1988. They also played a suite of Breton music in that concert, and their "Celtic Wdding" record was released on 1986. Other tracks on the same video tape are from 1987 and 1988. My best guess.
