Traditional music from Scotland and Ireland, especially featuring flute and whistle players.
"The Gallant Sodger" - "Ceolbeg" Demo tape 1982
I recently came across this demo tape which we made in 1982. Some of the tracks were not included on the first "Ceolbeg" album, including this one. I've added a few early publicity photos and a few from Lorient Festival, Brittany, in 1985. The final photo is of Pete Boond [RIP] and I think was taken in Ullapool on the west coast of Scotland. I still remember the music and good times we all had together with Peter. Sadly departed, much missed, but not forgotten.

I recently re-discovered this recording which I think someone sent me from the Ballyvourney "Cruinniu" Flute Festival some years back. Outstanding playing of 2 fine traditional Irish reels. The great Colm Murphy on bodhran. I took the photo at the Willie Clancy week, again, some years back, of Louise and her father Mick on accordion having an outdoor session of an evening in Miltown Malbay.

I've already posted a version of this, but this recording is better. Dave Whyte's setting to music of a poem by Neil Munro.

Happy St. Patrick's Day 2024 I haven’t seen Desi in a few years, maybe 5 or even 6, but I loved this track on his CD from 3 years ago, “Two For Joy”. I met Desi in 1977 and he has been both a good friend and musical inspiration ever since. The music is accompanied by a few photos from trips to Scotland in the 1970s/1980s, a few “Cran” publicity photos, and the covers from some of the recordings...

The Chiefs invented world music as we know it in the west, way, way ahead of their time and will never be equalled as a group I dont think.
Recorded as "Kitty Gone A Clinking Coming From The Fair" by Willie Clancy
Excellent.❤
I can't believe my luck to have stumbled upon Ossian in a Glasgow pub in 1977. The music still pulls at my heart to this day.
Bless them, they, we, will never be the same without dear Paddy
Hi, I read a comment you posted that you have a cassette recording of the JSD Band playing on John Peel's show. Can you upload it please? I understand you might be hesitant due to the uploader chewing you out but I'd like to hear it, as a fan of folk rock (and John Peel).
Hi - I don't think the recording I have is of suitable quality. But I am sure that at least some of the JSD band John Peel recordings are up on the internet somewhere, or they were a year or so ago. Incidentally, the JSD Band were inducted into the "Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame" just over 3 weeks ago, nominated by my brother Martin. We met up with Sean O'Rourke at the end of the evening. It was really great to catch up with him after so many years. They were a true inspiration to us in the early 70s.
@ That's awesome! Your brother Martin has good taste. Looking online, it seems like either the JSD band peel sessions have vanished or there's no way to search for them. I could only find listings that said what they played on those peel sessions but no recordings of the sessions themselves.
@@tweeandcute283 If I still have the tapes, I'll have a listen again. Maybe even with poor quality, it's better than them being lost forever.
I remember by chance in Dublin, surprised, a big room of irish women playing this tune. Talk about my heart being lifted
How can I find this on other streaming services?
1st Tune - Da Tushka by Ronnie Cooper
I'm afraid not. Ronnie Cooper's "Tushker" is a reel, the first tune Aly plays is a bagpipe-style march. It was given a name below, 3 years ago, assuming that is correct.
Used to deliver fuel oil to Royal Lochnagar Distillery before I retired love the Corries , had the pleasure of of meeting Ronnie Brown in Waverley Station a few years ago RIP Roy🏴🏴🏴
Magistral ❤
The chieftains que buenos ❤
Andy will always be remembered for his singing but i love hearing him go at that banjo in all the reels they played
Wonderful. Bríd is such a fantastic player.
Rock on Pete up in the sky from Anna Jim & family xx lol
A great tune!
❤️❤️⭐️
This music is ancient and beautifully sad.
This song brought me back home from London back in the '90's
Sung with a blunt honesty befitting the heartfelt angst of the words. Michael has a direct delivery which tears my heart to shreds. Just beautiful.
What tunes are they
wow
There are a few youtube clips of him playing in sessions at the Catskills Irish Arts Week, but I don't know of any more aside from the album. I also would love to hear more. His album was my favorite for a long time and pretty influential to my playing and my taste in tunes.
Happy to say I saw this same line-up play with Van Morrison on my 21st birthday - great experience!
Lovely to see you all and Pete you will be playing it up in the blue yonder lol anna Jim Dave and family xxx
These two were acquaintances of mine from decades ago in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Hard to believe it's been almost twenty-one years now! Johnny will be eternally remembered for his wit, warm smile and infectious laughter. Each brother is a tremendous musician, but together, the tension that only brothers have came out as musical magic! I miss seeing both of them but Phil choosing to play music mostly in the British Isles makes me miss them even more so. Thanks for the precious memories!
Une belle chanson intemporelle jouée avec le picking délicat qui lui sied à merveille. Je l'adore et l'écoute toujours avec bonheur 🌈
Harp 🎼🎼🎼☘️🇮🇪💚
Brought up with Aly Bain fantastic nostalgia x
Remembering Mich again, as I go through the Miltown photos of yore - we were very lucky to always find good music, and good company. Mich would have been 69 a few days ago. RIP.
Thanks for sharing Kenny. Miltown24 was not the same without Mich (or indeed yourself)
@@seanwhite1429 Hi Sean - hope all is well with you and family. Must get to Ireland next year. Watch this space.
I love this song.
What? 1985+/-?
I would think it was recorded in1984, but could be 1985. I'll ask Dougie Pincock when I see him in 2 weeks time.
Lovely
I always love to see Billy playing his autoharp it's beautiful ❤😊
Technically almost perfect. A meastro.
The first song, one of my favorites of the Chieftains. I saw them play in their prime in Berkley, CA in the very early 80's I'll never forget it. I rarely give a standing ovation, because like with tipping, with me, you have to earn it. They earn it to the max!
I just can't like this song enough.
One of the best nights I spent in a Folk club was watching the late Jim Couza, I guess that would have been '83-84-ish. ( Good Grief 40 years ago) Much missed and a splendid version of Women of Ireland
What a clip. Fiery playing. A friend of mine rates Seamus the best fiddler of the Glackin brothers. Would love to find more of his solo playing somewhere.
And thanks for sharing this by the way. This is excellent material, fair play to you.
@@52Paddy1991 Thanks Paddy. Very glad that you are appreciating and enjoying the music.
F'n brilliant
Genius but piano is too loud !
Fell in love with “the hearts” when I lived in cork in 84/85. Discovered so much great Irish music at that time like Freddie White and Mary coghlan. Saw the hearts live in Liverpool in about 2012 (not sure) for the first time…… what a gig!!!!
Hi. Alex here. Went out with Anne years a go. Learnt music from all of you and ended up heading my own band who toured all over Europe and the states. Thanks for the intro. One small thing after looking back. We'll it was fast but a bit basic. Good fun though. Thanks again Alex
Christy Moore - Lovely. Such an awesome singer and musician, and such class to make a point to credit Bill Caddick, who also wrote "Unicorns" th-cam.com/video/YNJzekpyCD0/w-d-xo.html
❤️❤️⭐️
Lovely stuff but that is definitely not Louise Mulcahy playing
You know, I did have a nagging doubt about that myself, but I'm sure that was the information provided with the recording. I will try to find the original recording, and who sent it to me to ask, but am not sure that will be possible.
Sounds similar to southern americans song during american civil war. The rhythem
Awesome!
What a dead audience. Would love to have been there that night!
Glad beyond measure I saw them live decades ago. God Bless them all for the beauty they gave us.
