Make and embroider a tea towel and use that to wrap presents. Two gifts in one. Bonus points if you design your own personalized line drawing to embroider. Tie with kitchen string or reused ribbon from the ghost of Christmas past.
I have watched several of your videos where you’ve mentioned how polluting glitter is and I totally agree. When my kids were little, I did discover I could make glitter at home with salt. We decorated a wreath with real pine cones and glue and salt to make them “sparkly”. We have had that same wreath for almost 15 years and the pine cones still look so festive and fun.
We decided on no gifts for adults. Only the kids got stuff. It was great! We are a big family and everyone was so relieved not to have all the extra expense and work. It also meant a lot less paper wrapping everywhere. We bought the older kids experiences and not objects. One was indoor sky diving!
@asta weis Can't wait! It's legal in my state but they are still working out sales. Looking forward to the day when I can go to the dispensary with a glass jar! So tired of little baggies. I'm at least making a collage of my Cookies bags. Also want organic, ethically produced, possibly seasonal and local, flower.
I personally do not consider leftover food wasteful. It means I don't have to cook for another day or so! ;) I LOVE leftovers! ♥ I was glad to see you have other options for them, rather than throwing them out. :) But me - I will eat mine. :D Tons of great suggestions here, Gittemary! ♥
“If you live in a forest, that’s just cheating and I don’t like you.” 😂 sorry I’m “cheating” 😂😂 I definitely do take advantage of my surroundings when it comes to my decor though. 🌲🌲
@@Gittemary well if you ever come to Georgia, US then stop by and visit haha. We are hoping to buy more land within the next year. We are only renting what we have right now.
I get so angry at joke gifts. I once saw a store selling "nothing" it was a circular sphere made of plastic with nothing inside and the tag was "to the person who has everything, here's nothing" or...."since you asked for nothing, here it is." It was $13....and plastic...why? At most that gets a chuckle..I'm so glad you mentioned that one
After thanksgiving, when everyone was tired of left overs, I chopped everything into cubes And make thanksgiving stew. Added a little bit of gravy into a stock and bam. New dish. It was so delicious!
I love looking for (Christmas) gifts for my best friends child. She was the one who got me interested in veganism and zero waste, so she's totally excited about second hand gifts. Next year her child will turn 3, so probably in some years finding second hand gifts will be more difficult. Tomorrow I'll send her the Christmas package. I found 4 books, 3 puzzles and my mom knitted some socks. 💚☺️
After years of wanting but never finding one, I finally got a red velvet dress this year second hand and I freaking LOVE it. This is going to be my festive holiday outfit from now on, screw ugly sweaters 😁
Oh wow! I wish i could have this. I know i can't eat much this year.. My parents in law know i am a vegetarian. I am not alowed to take my own food ( because they always say we take care of it and sometimes even get a bit irritated if i ask them if i shoud bring something for myself to replace the meat)... Results: pasta with chicken... chicken chopped up so extreme small i MUST eat it.. or oh... well... i don't have anything for you right now.. .. Yeah, that's why i offer to take it with me...They are provocating.. and even making discussions because the believe fish is not meat.. :( So i think i would not be able to eat much with christmas dinner. I am so happy for you they are willing to try this 😍😍😍
You say ribbon.......my cats favorite thing for Christmas. Just take a old stick and tie it around the stick and there you go. This Christmas my sister and I agreed not to give gifts. All though I'm going to cook to make a fabulous meal for Christmas. Make some vegan flatbread for my mother law and brother law with cilantro dip. I'm going to make this 2020 out with a bang.....thanks for your hard work.... Happy New Years too...
You can make glue with all purpose white flour and water. A couple of tablespoons of each, mix to the right consistency and voila! It sticks to paper and I use it for gift wrapping instead of tape. Only make a small amount as it goes a long way. Keep it in a jar in the fridge but it will mold after a few weeks. Trees: I opted for a thrift store artificial tree about 10 years ago and I will be able to use it for decades to come.
I‘m literally walking home from work 9.40pm and listening to this as if the video were a podcast. Idk but something about the word „sustainable“ is so calming.
I am doing presents for my sisters family but for my parents we are going to take them out to our favourite Italian restaurant in Broadstairs when we can, I still also owe my mum n my aunt afternoon tea sometime. Plus my sister and I still need to do a day spa /weekend sometime when things go back to normal. But I think my mum will plan a family ( with the girls) spa weekend eventually. My hubby and I are only doing stocking gifts ( practical gifts we use around the house etc) and no main present as we are renovating our home so that’s a gift in itself xx
Nice tips. 😊 Confetti can be made out of leaves or petals. My sustainable Christmas tree is an actual pine tree in a pot which brings me joy all year long by growing and producing nice foresty smell. 🌲
I’ve been binging your videos lately and love love love how you spread tips on zero waste without shaming people. That’s an issue I found with many eco-minimalist people here on TH-cam, so thank you for doing that
Currently binge watching your videos - love them! Last year I spent a total of £100 on gifts for the entire family, using my who gives a cr*p toilet paper wrapping to wrap each which was then saved for crafts or other gifts. All gifts were bought second hand or made using scrap wood / metal.
this season I am giving away a voucher for a restaurant for my parents. that way a local business gets my support and my parents don't get something that is just gonna collect dust. The rest of the gifts for my family are either second hand or edible (partially home-made). I still have tons of conventional wrapping materials that I want to use up (mostly saved from getting gifts in them - who needs to ever buy that stuff???) but I am slowly going through that so maybe in a couple of years I can apply your wrapping tips.
Also another way to save electric which my mum & I do is have solar panel lights. We keep them up all the time in the conservatory to make the place have ofc more light & make it feel more homely. I do have a ugly Christmas jumper but we have to wear one at work, however I haven’t brought another in about 6+ years & I’ve started getting bored of wearing the same one & never thought to make my own so I might do that this year. Thanks for sharing these great ideas with us ☺️
I have not bought wrapping material in years! Love saving pretty boxes and bags and paper. My kids especially love to tear the paper but i don't wish to take that joy from them just yet!
If you're giving to kids at a young age, i recommend *personalised childrens books* - themed versions of educational books to kids - the main reason is to expose them to healthy hobbies while young and pique their interest into reading/literature
You can use an iron or flatiron on the very lowest setting to press old fabric ribbons back in shape. If you're afraid they might still melt, press in between an old dish (lightly damp)dish towel.
My friend and I used the same gift bag for years, we'd give it back each year with our gift in it. This year I've been using scarves that I don't use anymore or from thrift shops, brown paper, and brown paper bags from shops that give them out. Love the secondhand towel or tea towel idea for wrapping, especially for edible gifts or things like bath salts.
Amazing video! We have a small family business with a sewing workshop. There we are using basic brown packing paper. So this year I will use leftover paper, for wrapping the gifts. Probably do some christmass paintings on them or I will use potato stamp (cut bigger potato in half, use some gingerbread cutter to make a shape, put a paint on it and use it as a stamp).
This year I gifted my niece a box filled with some of my old toys. I put a doll and lots of doll clothes in it. She loved it! I reused an Amazon box my stepsister had ordered
Using oranges as Christmas decor... Because I have a rabbit it would actually make more waste than good 😂 I just love when some random stuff is just the best option in the world... unless you have a 🐰 Great video as always ♥️
Be careful how much orange you're giving your bunny. You can give them an upset stomach with the acidity and water content and also give them too much calcium ❤
Another way to dispose of a cut Christmas is to donate to a local farm with goats/sheep/alpacas. Our animals love to eat them and everyone we know who buys a cut tree will drop it off at our farm gate after Christmas. The same applies to Halloween pumpkins (unless they’ve been painted/decorated). Great ideas! A few years ago I made cloth bags from Christmas themed fabric and those have been the wrapping for my children’s gifts for over 20 years. Now I would choose thrifted fabric instead. I also use reusable name tags for the gifts - little chalk board ones. For gifts leaving the house I use gift bags that I have revived gifts in, or plain brown paper. When my children used to attend kid birthday parties we would use plain paper and my kids would draw on it or write words to describe the recipient. I stopped sending Christmas and Birthday cards yea ago (except to my immediate family who appreciate cards - I’m fine not receiving them). When my kids were smaller they would draw cards on regular paper for those relatives. Now I struggle between sending an eco card but having it travel across the Atlantic to get to them vs ordering a card online that likely has a glossy finish but will travel less distance to get to them. I’m not sure which is the better option. Anyone?
51: Have a Polish podlazniczka instead of a Christmas tree. This way you'll only need one branch, not a whole tree! ;D 52: After you're done with you natural Christmas tree (or podlazniczka), check with your local zoo if they accept Christmas tree donations. Many animals like to snack on them!
We all bought ugly Christmas sweaters second hand, and use the same one every year. Since it's a once a year thing, it becomes "new" all over again by the time we take it out of storage.
I only have Xmas jumpers for work as I get to wear them for the whole of December but I wouldn’t buy them if it wasn’t for that reason. This year will be wearing Xmas jumper a little less as I don’t have my social Xmas dinners through my voluntary work I do outside of work. I have 4 Xmas tops may get one more but that will be it. X
Your Christmas tree is so fricking cute and I want one so much every time I see it..We don't usually do decor cos we dont have the room but this year ya know 2020 i treated myself to a tiny live tree in a pot for 3 quid. it's replantable and I can use the pot for planting my herbs next yr.I do have a holiday sweater that I was given as a gift last yr its a Peanuts Cartoon re holiday sweatshirt thats really baggy and cosy and was bought in a vintage store in Brooklyn. I love it and wish I could wear it more.It says Happy Holidays so the wearing period is longer and it's not ugly..
You may not find this super funny, but my daughter and I miscalled you “glittermary” for the large part of a year, oops! Thanks for enlightening us on glitter and the many many other tips we have picked up from you!
Great tips! I guess the best way to get a tree is to buy a second hand tree 🌲, my mom has been using her tree for almost 10 years and it still looks like new, will be using it for a long time
8:14 for decor. For people like me that don't give or get any gifts on christmas (because you already had the gift-giving on Saint Nicolas eve because you're dutch).
about 7:39 "wrap without tape", if you do have to use tape, e.g. if you mail out gifts (because this year you might not be able to meet your favourite humans and give them their presents in person) today i actually found a post on making glueless paper tape using water and flour!!!!! zerowastechef.com/2020/10/07/plastic-free-glue-wheat-paste/ yes it might seem weird, but it's a great alternative to scotch tape in my opinion!! 🌿 hopefully someone will find this useful :)
When I know that somebody has already some secondhand stuff, it's not a big step to give them something secondhand. And I love to find treasures which seem to been made for the people you love. The only thing that makes it hard is doubt. Do I really comprehend their style and know what they need etc? So to make it a bit easier for others to buy me something secondhand, I've started to make a sort of mood board with my favorite colours, materials, styles and brands. Hopefully that would help them in making a decision. Hopefully it will be of some help. So I'm wondering if you ( or somebody else ) have some tips to encourage people to buy yourself something secondhand rather than something new. For my parents it's still an awkward thing to do and I would like to see them change their mind a bit.
I have one "Xmas" Dress (its a grey dress with glitter and white lace on the neck) This year i realised that i wear this for 6 years. And i never whased it because i only wear it one/two days a year. Can't belive it😂
I have a Christmas bag; one Santa hat, a decorative hair piece, a pair of socks, and a pair of reindeer earrings. I own a few ornaments from my childhood that were gifts, but otherwise I like doing pine cone strings, having bowls of natural “potpourri”, and natural trees all the way. Dated holiday items (unless celebrating a baby’s first Christmas/birth/first Christmas married) are so so wasteful!!!
Me: 3 minutes ago. ? * Clicks on it instantly * Also for my brother I found puzzles online but checked if they had it on marketplace. And they did, the exact same ones.
I love to bake for family and friends over the holidays. This year I am making frozen cinnamon rolls they can defrost and bake whenever they want a sweet treat. I have been collecting jars for months for my baking! Still had to buy aluminum trays to fill in the gaps though. :/
On eBay and Craigslist you can find toys(at least I know dolls are very common) for half price and used not damaged! (Though they also sell damaged dolls for adult to custom so be careful)Just in case you have kids who want toys.
I have old glitter for crafting, so torn on what to do with it. Should I throw it away or craft some holiday decor I can use longturn during Christmas. It will still fall off..
Do you have any ideas on reducing the amount of packaging you're buying? We have SO much recycling. All our lettuces and such always come in plastic :(
@@Gittemary yay thank you so much! Always looking for new holiday recipes to show my family there doesn't need to be any meat on the table to make a Christmas feast✨
My family does a secret santa each year for the adults so we can focus on one person vs the small gifts for everyone. Well my mom sends out a questionnaire for people to fill out to give to their randomly chosen secret santa buyer. This questionnaire asks a question of what is your idea of the worst secret santa gift. Well this year I wrote down my worst secret santa gift would be meat and gin wrapped in sports memorabilia. To which they found hilarious and thought that would be a great gag gift to me. Like I said this worst gift... sooo no thanks to that. 🙄
I know earth hero has colorful fun festive gift wrapping that's made a recycled paper correct me if I'm wrong on this all sorts of Heroes carbon neutral and 1% for a planet too so when you order from them it will be a low low carbon footprint
"Buying things that you know for a fact they won't like but it's for a cheap laugh" Gag gifts are the worst. I find that usually people give those for birthdays rather than Christmas, but they still make me so mad. Like a guy giving his guy friend a thong, or an intentionally weird over-the-top sex toy, (why is it always guys that do this lol)
I've just bought a lovely dress for myself as I really needed a "formal" dress, and it's glittery... I didn't now that glittery was that bad... :( sh*t :(
Hand wash it very gently when it needs washing to help prevent the glitter fallout. Don’t wash it very often either. At the end of the day as long as you’re doing your best and implementing changes when you learn new information no one can criticise you ❤️
Can we normalize actually celebrating the full Christmas season? Especially if you're religious? The tree does not need to be put out for garbage collection on December 26! "The Twelve Days of Christmas" includes Christmas Day and lasts until January 7, which is The Feast of the Three Kings or Orthodox Christimas. That period includes many other feast days in between. Point is, make your holiday goods last more than just 24-48 hours of Christmas proper. Yas! Ugly sweaters have gone from thrift/handmade/clothing store chuckles to massive kits of plastic, synthetic rubber, animal products, and electronic lights and motors. Please stop!
I wish, when talking about glitter, you eould sldo mrntion that sometimes the ones that are marked "biodegradable" are made from mica, which is mined under hortible cobfitions, msinly by children. Ethically it is an awfull choice that sadly a lot of people make because they believe it's better for the planet and dont realise the human sacrifise it takes.
In my video about the impact of cosmetic the majority of time is spent talking about just this issue, so feel free to check it out ✌️ I usually do not go way into detail with the issues behind materials and products in these list video, there is no time - that’s why I made the impact series 😁
About joke gifts. In our country we have probably the worst present ever!!! (people love it of course - worst think = best present) AAA, WHY? It´s plastic ´tin´ completely empty with ´nothing´written on it. Really, why somebody buy this or even make this????

What a great video! So many great tips and I love how you included them in all sorts of categories. Happy holidays :)
I have one "Xmas" Dress (its a grey dress with glitter and white lace on the neck)
This year i realised that i wear this for 6 years. And i never whased it because i only wear it one/two days a year.
Can't belive it😂
I loved all your ideas!! So inspiring thanks!!

Also for my brother I found puzzles online but checked if they had it on marketplace. And they did, the exact same ones.
Yaaaas 🌿🙌
I think that if you already have it you should either use it or give it to someone that will! The important thing is not to buy more in the future
Use it on something you will keep for a long time? X
Lmao "all approved by my dad" I literally say that all the time.
Do you have any ideas on reducing the amount of packaging you're buying? We have SO much recycling. All our lettuces and such always come in plastic :(
I've never been this early 😍
Thanks for being here ❤️
Heyy I was wondering: Where can we find the recipes you were talking about?😊 Thanks!
They are on my blog, Gittemary.com 🙌 I have a folder entitled “holidays”
@@Gittemary yay thank you so much! Always looking for new holiday recipes to show my family there doesn't need to be any meat on the table to make a Christmas feast✨
Not sure if its in all areas heard you can rent live Christmas trees
My family does a secret santa each year for the adults so we can focus on one person vs the small gifts for everyone. Well my mom sends out a questionnaire for people to fill out to give to their randomly chosen secret santa buyer. This questionnaire asks a question of what is your idea of the worst secret santa gift. Well this year I wrote down my worst secret santa gift would be meat and gin wrapped in sports memorabilia. To which they found hilarious and thought that would be a great gag gift to me. Like I said this worst gift... sooo no thanks to that. 🙄
another tip- if you are using plain wrapping paper, you can decorate it yourself
I know earth hero has colorful fun festive gift wrapping that's made a recycled paper correct me if I'm wrong on this all sorts of Heroes carbon neutral and 1% for a planet too so when you order from them it will be a low low carbon footprint
"Buying things that you know for a fact they won't like but it's for a cheap laugh"
Gag gifts are the worst.
At the end of the day as long as you’re doing your best and implementing changes when you learn new information no one can criticise you ❤️
Buy an ugly christmas jumper that you will wear as PJs. XD
