Begin Again is a collaborative mini album by organist Syd Moon and guitarist/producer Daniel Casares. Rather than following the soul-jazz vocabulary typical of the format, the artists delve into a simmering jazz fusion style.
This is the first recording by Moon, an English farmer that Daniel met at a London jam session during his master's studies. Moon has been playing organ for over 45 years, but never thought of recording. Daniel convinced the organist to record a session with drummer Afonso Martínez, as he found Moon to be an impressive and creative musician.
The organ has an earthy quality as Moon imbues the tracks with a psychedelic yet grounded sound. The guitar provides fuzzy solos and rocking accompaniment. Contrasting with other projects by the producer, Afonso's drums remain relatively calm, although they reach high-intensity peaks on some tracks. The 5 original compositions fall somewhere between contemporary jazz and vintage instrumental rock, traveling through colorful chord progressions and evolving structures.
