    Can we just appreciate the fact that Linus doesn't tell people to get retroactively aborted anymore? I mean, the guy really worked on his atitude

    I didn't even know about Ardour. But because Reaper is made in part by legendary Justin Frankel, if I did use DAW's, it'd be hard for me to not pay the one-time fee of $60 for quality software..
    EDIT: Interestingly enough, the creator of Ardour and the creator of Reaper did a podcast episode last year, which sounds like a very interesting listen called "Creator of Reaper, Justin Frankel and Creator of Ardour, Paul Davis have a podcast together."

    I've been using KDE Neon as my daily OS for years. The idea that it's not a real distribution or can't be used as your daily desktop is greatly exaggerated. If you love having the latest of everything KDE, its great!

    • @michael_tunnell
      @michael_tunnell  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey thanks for commenting and sharing your experience, I’m glad it’s worked out for you. Though i don’t think It’s greatly exaggerated, it’s the literal messaging from the KDE Neon team. If someone wants to do it because they are “adventurous KDE enthusiasts” then that’s great but this does not apply to everyone especially not beginners. I’ve also heard many bad stories about daily driving or and I’ve experienced some large issues myself in the past. The fact that the initial install of Neon after Plasma 6 was released didn’t have the ability to reboot or shutdown the system without dropping to the terminal is a pretty good example of their kind of issues

    • @ContemplativeCat
      @ContemplativeCat หลายเดือนก่อน

      @michael_tunnell Actually it's pretty rare and I never had that issue. Most problems are minor and fixed pretty quickly with updates.

    The angellic sound used for the first Ubuntu releases you mentioned sounds just like the KDE 3 sound that come with Linux Mandrake 7.2 back when I started in Linux.

      This brought back memories of the orange accent colour and more 3D effect, that was cool too. I kind of miss the progress bars in splash screens as well.

    The funniest is Kent whining about the rules he broke not existing 20 years ago, trying to argue that because the Kernel project worked without those rules 20 years ago then they must be unecessary and useless.

    • @sqlexp
      @sqlexp 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Kent doesn't understand the reasons behind the release process. However, it's becoming difficult to show respect for Linus as Linus is siding with furries.

    • @steeltormentors
      @steeltormentors 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @@sqlexp from what I understand, Linus want to expand Linux maintainers to younger generation using more modern language (Rust). That is why Linus looks as if he is siding with the furries...but thanks to Kent's theatrics, this could turn the other way round!

      Maybe Kent needs 20 years until he understand why those rules were added.

    What Linux publishers need to learn is that naming the products is branding. These names need to appeal to the user and have some sort of meaning. Otherwise they are a road block to popularisation.

    I took a chance and didn't back up, but all worked fine upgrading from Ubuntu 24.04 to 24.10. Everything worked fine, but some Gnome extensions don't work, not many, most work. The APT version is 2.9.8 not 3.0 but basically the same, eh? BTW, the Kubuntu Cosmic Oriolo background wallpaper looks quite good. In the Appearance section there should be a option to have different background images for each Workspace with Gnome 47.

    • @cybernit3

      I noticed use $ apt search kde-plasma-desktop the version is very old 5:148ubuntu3. So I am kind of afraid to do the sudo apt install kde-plasma-desktop on Ubuntu 24.10. If anyone knows how to install, then I could switch to Gnome 47 or Kde plasma 6.2 would be nice, thanks. I know Kubuntu 24.10 install but then I have reinstall and is a pain and have my Gnome setup. I am just curious about KDE Plasma and looks kind of good.

    Funny thing about “bringing back” a classic login sound - hey, these files are out there, and anybody can set that up for themselves! (Same thing for people who get nostalgic for that original Windows XP wallpaper.)

    KDE Neon with X11works great for me but I've been using Linux for over 20 years... 🤣🤣🤣 The fresh ISO is also downloadable. I wouldn't touch Kubuntu with a barge-pole with all that Snap rubbish installed, instead I'd go for something like CachyOS.

    Neon did not boot? Cool. When Ubuntu 24.04 came out I had to start the setup on my notebook 4 times because it crashed. And it's still the same today when you try to join the box to an AD domain :D

    • @michael_tunnell
      @michael_tunnell  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I was referring to the reboot function not working once installed, you had to reboot it in the terminal. Your case is a specific configuration it seems where as the neon issue was just a basic install. They’ve also had bugs before where it couldn’t install and a variety of things. I’m not saying neon is bad, it’s just not for beginners

    I'm just a Linux user. About this drama: I just do not understand, why another filesystem? I am using ext4 and maybe someday I will go to Btrfs. But it's all technical. It does not bring more users to Linux. I do not want non-tested filesystems, because my data is valuable. Pointless wars and drama.

    In the real live, I've finally got a sound on Kubuntu 24.10 after 2 years.
    But Plasma 6 does not work with previous ulauncher extensions, pulpit widgets, latte, klassy, lightly, lightlyshaders, themes, sddm, bootsplash. Themes installer doesn't work, Dolphin lost some features like details panel.
    The rest is ok.

    KDE Neon
    I think it would have been better if KDE Neon was based on a rolling release distribution. The fixed release models of Ubuntu is counter productive to the goals of KDE Neon. In my opinion off course.

    This news makes me kind of sad. Kubuntu has been my favorite distribution for the past few years after switching to Linux, but I recently had to leave it behind. Canonical has been increasingly pushing Snaps. With them now moving things like CUPS to Snap, I had no choice but to move.
    Now I'm on Bazzite and Aurora. Aurora is actually my new recommendation for someone who wants a good KDE+Plasma distribution. Good defaults on top of an immutable base. Also, since it's based on Fedora, it updates alongside Fedora's schedule. Fedora, IMO, strikes a nice middle ground between Debian+Ubuntu and Arch.

    to black screen , i have to chose the advanced options at
    boot an chose the current kernel then it works but the grub file looks this
    GRUB_DEFAULT=0
    GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden
    GRUB_TIMEOUT=0
    GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`(Kde Neon 6.1)
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash amdgpu.ppfeaturemask=0xffffffff"
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""
    assume the GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`(Kde Neon 6.1) is the issue
    my question is can i change the (Kde Neon 6.1) line to the current kernel
    if so how should that look , is the way the kernel is appears in neofetch the correct way
    if so could i just copy an paste it where the (Kde Neon 6.1) is ?

      KDE Neon is not advisable for most people. Does your system have more than one drive?
