    I've already been donating to KDE monthly, but I might make an additional donation and "adopt" Elisa. I love KDE software very much, and although Elisa isn't the best program for organizing music (I use Strawberry for that), it's great for playing music.

    24:09 I think it's the first time I hear that quote, and I love it. It's attributed to Nora Roberts; "If you don't ask, the answer is always no." Great quote and a good reminder to step out of the comfort zone. 😊

      I'm glad you like it, feel free to use mine anytime. I can say for certain that I didnt get it from Nora Roberts as this is the first time I've heard that name but I am not surprised someone else had a similar idea. I think mine is original creation in phrasing but the sentiment is likely from the "miss the shots, you dont take" phrase as I think I may have heard that first

    18:30 They are not just looking for a Unicorn. They also state that they will prioritize "candidates from diverse and underrepresented groups". So they are already being picky about the candidate and even stating that merits will not be the main factor. Good luck with that. Maybe they will hire a second shaman? Then they can Magick this into reality. 😅 But yeah I hope for this future to push Linux forward. Lots of potential for Linux app development growth if our hard-working devs are finally compensated.

    • @MyAmazingUsername

      I am also glad that this separates Flathub from GNOME and puts it in shared control with KDE. Better for the health.

    • @michael_tunnell
      @michael_tunnell  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      After I released this more info came out on it, it turns out its not that bad but they expressed it a bit poorly. For example, the Payments System code is already done and many other things are technically done, they just want someone with legal skills to help them take it across the finish line. So it seems bigger than it really is. The amount is still probably too small but it's not as drastic as it seems.
      There is way too much of this anti-diverse rhetoric in this community in my opinion. For example, at no point did they say they are prioritizing anything. They said "We strongly encourage candidates from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds" and they also said that even if people think they "might not meet all criteria" should still apply if they "believe they can contribute to Flathub’s success". This is basically a way of saying that all applications are welcomed and no one should feel like they shouldnt submit. At no point did they say anything about merits or anything like that. There are many people promoting anti-DEI because its cool to hate that now because it has been overdone and done poorly by corporations but wanting people to not feel discourage regardless of their background is not a bad thing.

    • @MyAmazingUsername
      @MyAmazingUsername หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@michael_tunnell Ah, it's a major relief to hear that they're mostly looking for legal advice to finish this. That's a lot less worrying than what it sounded like.
      Regarding the diversity thing, I see your point. It's just that GNOME has explicitly released their "5 Year Plan" slides a few months ago, which states they will be PRIORITIZING diversity, so why wouldn't we worry that they will do the same thing now that they've already said they were going to do? They have a very bad track record of putting that above everything else. Which explains how they hired a Shaman who ended up overspending and ruining their foundation's budget so that they were bankrupt and had to fire 33% of staff.
      I am all for diversity but not to the religious levels seen in GNOME. It's not a binary on/off thing. It's a spectrum and is not as important as merit in this case, since they're already looking for a Unicorn! And I seriously hope this Flathub initiative succeeds so that we have a way for Linux developers to earn donations via the software centers. I have advocated for years that Linux has a funding problem and this is a great solution.
      Fingers crossed that GNOME actually hires someone with enough skills to get this done. I want them to succeed. That is why I care. ❤️ I don't want their strong ideology to get in the way of Flathub's establishment.

      Only severe problem I had on Arch was a GNOME update breaking the desktop environment. Any other major issues I've faced are things that I _directly_ caused.
      I used GNOME Classic for about a week until the next update fixed it. (Affected Garuda too. Tried rolling it back, still had the problem.) I don't use GNOME anymore, but it was a good learning experience: Always keep a backup DE or compositor.
      Wayfire has every feature I had to hack together in GNOME, and it's all default functionality. _Really_ wish it installed without issue through the AUR. If it did, I'd be running Wayfire instead of Hyprland right now.

    *Cinnamon is great & the improvements are welcome* --- but it's starting to age - being locked into a W10 look. While it is easy to 'center' apps - it doesn't offer a centering function to match W11 menu launch. Given Mint's current rise to No 1 in the Distrowatch ratings - then it's a selling point for those looking to maintain a Windows experience while leaving MS behind. For my money - I'd like to see Cinnamon also offer the capacity to change the length of the panel. Also they need to do something about the sudden jump in panel icons that go from 47 being small to 48 being large. There is no transition. The other thing that would be useful is a gnome / Apple like - App launcher.

      for the most part, I agree with what @NanescuRadu1 said. I would add though that Wayland is made by the same people because Xorg is the name of the group and X11 is the name of the last version of X. X11 is super old and has lots of issues but this is also a very hard thing to build so its taking a while. Wayland has a lot of improvements over X11 but also is missing some stuff still. As for hardware, support is pretty solid for all of them now since Nvidia finally decided to stop being jerks a couple years ago but it was a fight for a while lol

    I can see the point of the desktop devs saying it's up to the distro devs to polish the final look.
    Because if you have, say, Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS, Manjaro etc using stock cinnamon, it may not look or "feel" right and so the cinnamon devs would be the ones taking the flack for that.
    Where the distro devs should be ultimately responsible for tweaking desktops to make them look and feel like their own distinct distro.
    Ultimately it's not a really big issue I guess but for what it's worth I can see the cinnamon dev's point of view.

    • @michael_tunnell
      @michael_tunnell  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Distribution Devs should have the ability to customize the desktop but they shouldn’t be expected to. Fedora has a policy where they always ship vanilla upstream, so not only do they not customize that’s a conscious decision. The developers of a desktop should want to offer a great out of the box experience, not doing so assuming everyone will customize it is a misstep by the desktop team. The Cinnamon team should get flack for making a bad design if they did. If a distribution wants to customize it then great but it’s not their responsibility to when it comes to the desktop. They should want to but they shouldn’t have to.
      Imagine if a car dealership had to customize a car with mods and stuff before the manufacturer decided to ship an ugly car, it wouldn’t be on the dealership to fix it.

I’m already committing as much as 12 hours to make this show every week, doubling that is just not something I can do especially since I make this show free to watch 😎

      Thanks, I'm glad you enjoy my content. As for how long, if I actually counted the time it would be more I suspect, this is just estimating. I didn't even include the time it takes to make the thumbnails, or the intro animations, or the metadata, creating the subtitles, creating the episode transcript (you can see this on the website link at the bottom), or the difference metadata differences between the podcast and the video, and all the other stuff. I would estimate that all of this is at least 20 hours a week, maybe a little more. I do most of this stuff on Fridays so as you can imagine, I literally do nothing but TWIL on Fridays so effectively it takes up the entire day and then some to find the topics throughout the week. ... yea it's a lot and I wish I could add more topics sometimes, there are also times I wish I could cut the show in half lol

    Linux Mint devs are FAMOUS for stubbornly choosing and sticking with ancient s/w. After all, they're the ones who initiated MATE. They have forked so much ancient stuff from former GNOME and taken so much burden on themselves that I wonder if it wouldn't have been simpler to do everything from scratch like COSMIC...

      That old look is what I liked about it. I hate rounded corners and floating panels. I just want nice screenhugging rectangles. No wasted space.

    Good grief Flathub, a governing body, so lemme guess... yet another freakin Code of Conduct board, again, sheesh. And thats ALOT of focus on payment processing for a distribution method for what are mainly FOSS apps ? Should we be worried that Flathub wants to be a corp and have integrated payment system ?

      I hope their is some balance. Because I do not mind using purchasing or donating to application that I oftenly use. Plus, if this is the only way that will get corporations to port their software for Linux use *cough* Adobe *cough* I will be satisfied.

      I don't understand why having some kind of structure is a bad thing. It's like people people claim the CoC board for Linux is somehow a problem of random outsiders when in fact it is 4 people with 3 of them being core kernel developers and the other being legal advice. It's possible to do it well. As for Flathub, they already talked about adding payment system to Flathub and I think they most certainly should do that. FOSS is not long term sustainable which is why so many projects die because they dont get funding and the developers have to move one. FOSS is great as a philosophy and it works well in a lot of ways but there is a limit where it can also be a problem. I am for the Flathub adding a payment system so developers can start making money from their software without having to setup their own separate thing and it also provides incentive for commercial apps to support Linux because there is a place that they know they can use to make money and to me that is a good thing.

    That "refresh" of the Cinnamon Desktop is so freaking ugly IMO. They need to hire a designer or something. The only one that looks worse is Cosmic Desktop which is probably the ugliest desktop I've ever seen. No idea wtf they are thinking but OMG it is ugly.

    • @otockian
      @otockian หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@bp56789 None. For Cosmic I could do a 1 hour video review on all the poor design choices they have made. It's just inconsistent everywhere you look. Hell, just look at the dock in Cosmic, the left icon is closer to the corner than the right icon. That alone bugs the living hell out of me, I can't stop looking at it. So annoying. The super rounded corners is also something I am getting pretty tired of tbh, it also messes up the padding and spacing on that dock so it's just a poor choice really. Then the border around the windows in Cosmic? I mean I get it you want an accent color, but man does that just look terrible. It's so thick, and bright and again rounded corners, even when windows are snapped the corners stay rounded (hopefully just an alpha thing). Their visual design all feels so cramped when they have a TON of space, it's like they are allergic to whitespace or something. Then when you do snap windows, there is huge gaps between them which looks absolutely horrid. I get it, it's alpha...but....

    • @michael_tunnell
      @michael_tunnell  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Gaps between tiled windows is actually preferred by the tiling community, that’s why i3-gaps was made. I think they have a difficult task ahead of them trying to blend traditional with tiling.

    • @bp56789
      @bp56789 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@otockian Yeah, the default looks too cramped for my eye too. I think the dock is unsymmetrical because the leftmost icon is small and rightmost icon is large. Would be cool if they could auto-adjust the dock to account for that. It looks like Mac OS avoids that by keeping finder and trash as the side icons of the dock.
