Every lore video makes me wish GGG would go back just once a year with a league and tie up loose ends or elaborate running lore in the game. Revisit and expand or put closure to Metamorph, or Blight, or Beastiary…something. The lore is great but ultimately it doesn’t feel good to have dozens of stories relating to the Vaal or the Lightless or any of these additional pieces of content that all get told with really great beginnings and usually little to no middle or ending. There is enough open ended lore in the game that we can stop adding new things that simply come and go with no conclusion or tangible way to tie in to existing stories, and it’s not a bad idea to begin consolidating a lot of the bloat in PoE by revisiting old leagues now and then to either revamp existing mechanics or replace some outdated ones.
I agree! We have so many stories that could be concluded without ending the mechanics, if that’s their concern. New content is always good but it could still be related to other existing content.
They almost did it a little while ago with Breach. The breachlords were originally trying to "unite," and in 3.17 they added in Xesht-Ula, a unique boss composed of the names of the breach lords who can drop splinters of any other breach lord. It's a tantalizing taste of lore that shows the breach lords able to achieve their goal, but to what end?
That just isn't the way GGG goes about league lore. They prefer the open ended way of dropping lore tidbits through items. They do, however, continue growing on the lore pieces that were established previously. For example, Scourge was meant to be the demons Venarius forsaw in Synthesis, continued the mention of 'Chaos' as an entity introduced in Ultimatum, and confirmed that leagues are alternate realities. Harvest league touched several unique items from past leagues such as Harbinger. Heist and Betrayal expanded the lore so much more than any other previous leagues through NPC dialogue. Delirium brought Tangmazu to the spotlight, a character teased in the campaign previously. I can go on.
When I played Metamorph I considered through mechanics, that crumpled note, and the fact Tane wears the suit constantly is that a liquid that forces the body to break down and reform. When a caterpillar goes into a cocoon, it dissolves it's own body into a liquid slurry and from that slurry becomes the moth or butterfly it is supposed to be. Research have also found that *memories* travel through this process where if you associate an odor the the caterpillar do not find offensive with mild shocks, the adult form after metamorphosis will continue to avoid the odor (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18320055/). PoE took that thought of what if you could merge beings with their component parts and then see what happens in the end. I believe from both what I thought at the time and what you posted, the green gas inside is keeping himself together constantly. Tane will never stop being Tane because his components are the only things inside the suit. The suit would then also be protecting Tane from contamination of other components that might be splashed on them.
Just like Lucan, tane forces his apprentice (us) to handle the extremely dangerous samples, always keeping himself from the danger. If he is indeed a metamorph, perhaps his storyline would've ended the same way Lucans did--being murdered by his own apprentice. Perhaps the failed final experiment would've had him reveal that he, too, was not the kind man he seemed in public.
It's like that episode of Black Mirror when they take the memory of the person being electrocuted and the memory can feel the pain each time they get shocked. This is seriously creepy. Great lore!
Never really gave a thought about metamorph, but now it's really interesting to see, there's a dark force even older than the beast's corruption, wonder if we'll see any development on that front in PoE2
Ok i just watched ths one....have to say... i do think that the darkness that is inside everyone that Tane is trying to remove could be the Sin's ashes that when he was burn was absorbed by everyone.... just my thoughts

so i read the lore bits of Metamorph but never caught the voice line in Tane lab since i never heavy on metamorph mechanics. The winged scarabs lore did gave me confusion for a while though. Good job on the video!!
I can't empathise how much I like your videos. I am a lore addict in all games I play and POE lores are ambrosia. Your videos are ambrosia. Please do blight next
I didn't think much of Metamorph or Thane at first. His design was a tad silly to me, but after listening to his backstory and philosophy, he quickly became one of my favorite characters. His story is about the evil we all carry inside of us, which I find incredibly compelling. Though Thane claims to want to understand this evil, he seems to handle his own evil poorly. While he claims he regrets the part he plays in Lucans murder in front of the exile, there is clearly no regrets in his mutterings when he thinks himself alone. He wants to appear like a better man than he is, so I wonder if his stated goal to "extract the intrinsic darkness" is just a pretense as well. It sounds like he would be fine continuing his experiments at infinitum without making any progress, so long as it means the prolonged suffering of his former master. He doesn't control his own darkness - it controls him. And it would, assuming his story would have gotten a proper ending, most likely consume him.
Tane shouldn't have tried to remove the darkness, but grow all the other aspects that are there to compensate, innocence, hunger, conflict. Or put the darkness back to the state it was initially. Because it seems like an essential part of the human essence
since tane had this violent outburst at his master, and is submerged completely in this liquid - what if this liquid somehow "contains" this power that he possibly cannot control? and what we make with the liquid/samples is monsters with similar uncontrollable outburst, so he keeps vials of this liquid on his belt as a weapon to control these powers on other beings? this would fit with this "intrinsic darkness"
what could be the reason for Tane to retain his master's surname? is it for how slaves are identified with their masters? or for namesake purpose? if he did despise Lucan he could be using a different one or just his first name perhaps. A big hmmmmmmm for this one
I thought about speculating on that. Whether it’s just because he was owned by Lucan, or if it’s a show of respect. Tane never refers to himself by his full name, so I wasn’t sure why. It is strange though.
Amazing work! To an extent the open ends are probably intentional but I‘d love to see more callbacks and further hints in the future instead of adding ever more civilizations and Metamorphs with their own open ends… P o E 2 …
They were! But both Hargan and Clarissa were dealing with virtue gems in Oriath before their exile, so it was certainly still present over there. Piety too. Just some underground stuff
The umbreon in the flask was my favorite part

Creations of Saresh remaining scattered all over Wraeclast to this day sounds like the Rogue Metamorphs we can allocate on our atlas passive tree
I'm literally downloading this game right now to play for the first time. So thanks for all the lore videos
Awesome!! It’s an amazing game and I hope my videos help while you’re going through it

The lore here is shockingly awesome. Ill never see a metamorph the same again.
Ooooh. Rapid fire Noodle Lore videos. best league ever! Not done a lot of metamorph so this was very interesting.

Would love to see "sequel" expansions that follow up on both the lore and mechanics of previous expansions.
Out of all the lore videos, this one surprised me the most!

They were! But both Hargan and Clarissa were dealing with virtue gems in Oriath before their exile, so it was certainly still present over there. Piety too. Just some underground stuff
