that’s why it makes so much sense to me that china would preemptively up tariffs on the USA before trump gets into office. i think china knows they can’t maintain things the way they have been. they’re trying to change a lot in their economy and infrastructure but a lot of damage has already been done. especially with everything going on with their real estate and farming industry. chinas farming industry is taking wild hits with toxic gmos they get from companies like monsanto. china will likely have to reinvent themselves just like how the USA will under trump. esp with the news about travel visas being denied for chinese businessmen trying to goto the CES convention in Las Vegas next month. china is struggling just like the usa

From everyone that is willing to give it and many who are not.
In general it works like this:
People in China due to collapsing real estate prices which was a go-to investment for gerenations are now choosing to invest in banks. Because the situation is so unstable they stash whatever money they can scrounge instead of spending it if at all possible.
Banks are required and/or pressured by local governments to invest into a multitude of no-name financial firms that are really subordinate to those local government and offer to return investment based on CCPs fraudlent predictions of fraudlent GDP growth.
Those are empty promises though, literally all of the local governments are insolvent, so they gradually aquire new debt to pay the old one, accumulating even more debt.
So in essence they exchange real money of Chinese citizens for lies without their knowledge.
Well, what if a person wants to withdraw their money? If bank has more people investing than withdrawing it's fine. When it's not people are required to present a document from police and wait to withdraw any sizable amount of money. Some are accused of illegal activity and investigated for years now, without an end in sight.
And when the tough times come and people have to withdraw - there is no money and banks just collapse leaving people bankrupt. There is supposed to be a safety net of insurance backed by larger banks but those often tell that the insurance premiums were not paid to them for a long times so they cant help you.
This is not possible in "normal" countries because it's evident the debt will never be paid (although i.e. the US national debt is not far from that state).
But in China people who had their money stolen are ignored by courts and can only protest. If they do, local governments employ police and/or mafia to quell them and strictly censor the fact that it happened. So a lot of people are clueless that their saving don't actually exist and continue feeding the banks.
There are other schemes as well such as fooling foreign investors, ramping up fines, shaking down businesses, etc.
But sooner or later people get a general hang that trying to accumulate wealth is counterproductive so they just... don't. There is no point in opening a business if there are very few customers, random fines are likely to run it into ground, and even if you do get money banks will steal it. So they close down businesses and downsize as much as they can.
Of course the economy doesn't look great after that. But the local governments are required to show (or fake) 5% growth while it's actually in decline. So they create fake economic activity by borrowing money from themselves accumulating EVEN MORE debt
Unsurprisingly it's very unsustainable, it essence they are burning through vast ammount of cash China accumulated during the age of actual growth. They are doing so because government promised recovery - which didn't come, and probably won't come.
At some point the money runs out and the whole economy will be going the way of Sri Lanka.
There are fears that Xi is going to hide it behind a war-economy againt Taiwan.
They don't want to start the war early because it will instantly destroy what is left of actual economy.
But overall it's not important to CCP if China survives, only if CCP survives at the cost of entirety of China.

It will change, but not now.99.999% of Chinese people think/hope everything is still all right. I don't know the threshold, but this is far from beginning of a huge change.

Wages went up, production went up, etc. Now, your cost of living has grown and you can't afford it either and the jobs aren't there.
