Thanks a ton for this PURE review. No stupid unboxing, no specs narration, but just the gameplay POV. At the end of the day, I won't care how powerful my console is, but rather does it have good games, will I pick it up again after initial novelty and is it worth my money.
I might be interested in getting this device if a new model comes out with micro-SD storage and a toggleable frontlight display. As for ergonomics, that can be improved on with 3D printed grips you can find on the official subreddit.
I got my PlayDate last week and I haven't enjoyed a portable console like this in years. I adore the thing and the amount of creativity that devs are pouring into their creations for it is staggering.
I played the playdate a bunch on a train with very harsh sunlight and there has not been a screen as crisp as this Sharp memoy display. Using an off the shelf backlit LCD would have been easier and cheaper for them to integrate so I'm very happy they sticked with it, it really complements the backlit device one is carrying anyway.
I like the look of the black and white too and I agree the screen should be brighter with better viewing angles. I think it would be neat if Playdate sold a foot pedal attachment that would enable a turbo function.
I loved watching all the vids you made for this little machine, the games look super fun. Basic. But shows the makers creativity! You game too looks great. The title is perfect! I hope they produce a version 2 of it, with all those improvements and more so than you mentioned. Also as Bruce Wayne says: “Does it come in Black?” 🤔🙂👍
Part of the charm is not having a backlight. Limitation breeds creativity. When you were gaga about the Amico, I was Gaga about the Playdate. I have an OP-1 made by Teenage Engineering so I knew the build quality was going to be top notch.
I agree, for me the screen as only been and issue a few times, then I turn on a light... thanks for watching, thanks for subbing, if ya have not subbed that's ok, I just appreciate you being here :)
Part of the charm is not having a backlight. Limitation breeds creativity. eh?? That's a very poor excuse for what is obviously a negative about the device. It's nice to see what you are playing isn't it? Don't you wish the OP-1 had a brighter screen so it's easier to use outdoors? I'm sure its designers didn't say "oh, this will make our gamers more creative, and while we are at it let's bundle in a blindfold as well!". Actually...TE designed the device so anything might be possible.
I was skeptical, but Playdate's definitely my favorite system in a LONG time. The Switch and ps4 are great and all, but all the recent systems feel samey (and all play roughly the same games...). The playdate actually feels new and different, and I love that. I think the black and white screen and weird control system are brilliant because that prevents the system from becoming just another emulation/port machine. Also as a programmer who spends all day staring st a computer, I LOVE that the screen is not backlit. It's so much easier to wind down with at night and rest my eyes for a bit than staring at another backlit screen. (They say they actually spent more for the non-backlit screen than a regular backlit color LCD - considering how sharp and pretty it is, I believe it.) Great community support, creative games, unique controls... Unironically handheld of the decade for me.
The screen is pixel perfect and amazing in the right light, but I tend to play mine in optimal viewing areas so I am good :) The system is so different and refreshing I love it. , thanks for watching, if ya subbed many thanks as it means a lot to me :)
Nice review. But...what I see pretty much everyone not talking about is the future price of games. How much will season 2 cost? There is no info from Playdate on their site. So why not just wait until the release info...ie; there is no rush to buy one of these until that info is available.
I get that, tbh I am not even remotely interested in season two as I play the mostly free or cheap indie game son the system, season 1 are some of my least played games :) thanks for watching, thanks for subbing, I appreciate you being here :)
The games look neat, but the price seems way too steep for what you are getting. If it were half the price, I might consider it. Thanks for the video, Pete.
I didn't know much about this console, but may I know why is it still sell on preorder? I thought it has been out for more than a year so it might be available on a store.
Make sure you watch and read tons of reviews, I like it but it has some flaws like I mention in my video thanks for watching, thanks for subbing, if ya have not subbed that's ok, I just appreciate you being here :)
For me if I didn't own an Evercade or a Steam Deck and it had a back light I would consider it. Otherwise for me with the 2 devices I can play everything that I want to play.
to some for sure... it is overpriced no doubt thanks for watching, thanks for subbing, if ya have not subbed that's ok, I just appreciate you being here :)
I've had one for a while and it is definitely a bit overpriced. 50$ I think they would make a major loss on though. I would argue somewhere between $100 and $120 would make more sense. I think they had to cover a lot of investment and development issues with that current price.

yeah it is a special device for sure thanks for watching, thanks for subbing, I appreciate you being here :)
Same. I feel like gaming left me behind some time in the mid 2000's. I think this is a great platform for ppl who just want some fun 2d games.

no black option as I know of, I think once they get through their original pre orders they may look to upgrade the hardware perhaps

Peter, do you think the playdate is good for kids? Or a switch or ipad or something like that would be better. My kid is 7 years old.
Switch lite or iPad 100%

Fair enough!

The back light is an issue if you game in the dark or dimly lit areas, which is a lot of gamers lol
Hey man, are these available for purchase now?
They are on pre order ... I was a part of the third group of orders , thanks for watching, if ya subbed many thanks as it means a lot to me :)
Did you make any kinda money with your game Pete? 😝👍
no it is up for free.... :)
Is it worth the full price
for me it is :)

@@EverCanadian Ok. It’s definitely unique
50 dollars is a fair price
