    I went to 140's and it solved 5 months of intense SI joint pain that had me using a walker. Shorter cranks saved me. Hardly anyone talks about it, but shorter cranks open up the hip angle and that could be the difference between being sidelined or continuing to ride in your old age. I am soooo thankful I made the change😀

    6ft exactly, 34" cycling inseam (with shoes on), more on the XC side of XC / Trail rider. Been running 175mm cranks since I first got into the sport ten years ago but have been getting some knee problems these days so decided to try 170mm. I haven't needed to downsize my chainring (still on a 32t) but definitely have to be in a lower gear on climbs and I can certainly feel the loss of torque despite the fact it's only supposed to be 3% loss by going from 175mm to 170mm. Downhill and on the flats though I would regularly spin out on the 10t on my SRAM Eagle setup with the 175s whereas now I'm a cog or two higher up the cassette. Knee feels much better but I do miss the torque. Not beating any Strava PRs for climbs any more despite putting in the same effort.

Definitely notice less strain on my knees, easier to spin up and added trail clearance. 5 Dev comes out with super short cranks with all kinds of charts and now everyone thinks they need 155 cranks. I don’t like my 165 cranks on my new eMTB. They definitely feel too short, and the front of my shoe scraped the ground today just making a small turn on the slow ride home through the park. I know everyone says it doesn’t matter on an e-bike, but they are wrong! I’m definitely thinking of going to 170 mm. I use the bike to get from point A to B and back to A (home), and you definitely notice that you max out at 17 mph downhill through the park. I couldn’t pick up any more speed no matter how hard I tried on the 1x12 XT. I have a 36t chainring, 165 mm cranks (standard E Thirteen on the bike), but I could definitely do with the longer cranks.

    Got the same mod planned on my touring bike. Rode 45 years on 170mm cranks. Got touring bike with 175mm square taper 46-30 chain wheels. It doesn't feel natural. Track bike with 165mm cranks 8500 miles. Getting 170mm 2 part cranks with 44-28 rings. 3 birds with one stone! As you get older, those hips will thank you for short cranks. They also allow for a noticeably more aero position on the bike. If I go faster than 25mph, I'll probably be coasting anyway especially on a loaded touring bike! Brake upgraded first. Also the bike has a very low bottom bracket.

    I like the short cranks for a e bike or DH bike but for a pedal bike. For my 170 enduro pedal bike I prefer the longer pedals as it is way easier to climb as you have so much more power. Shorter cranks especially like 155 length are not so great for climbing on a pedal bike. I really like 5 Dev. I absolutely love Polygon.

      I think climbs (and acceleration out of a dig) are better with longer cranks because longer cranks (or any pipe or shaft) will certainly allow for more torque output. Shorter cranks would theoretically have more power output (helps maintain a higher speed).

    Yeah a smaller framed bike for smaller riders should have appropriate sized cranks , i see xs 49 cm bikes with 170 mm cranks , the bike industry just throws 170 mm on everthing .

      Yes. Probably should have gone down to a 30t

    Next time check into Praxis cranks and bottom brackets. You could of went carbon for $310

    • @JaredHoff
      @JaredHoff  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That probably would have been a smarter option. Spending over $500 was a bit ridiculous for this upgrade.

    i went with 165 RF turbines. i actually don’t care for the 5Dev look. At least not on the ebike i seen in person

      RF makes some good cranks

    Short, cranks,
    , you can’t just start blasting away over rocks and high spots forcing close calls with p strikes and not expect to crash. You have to time pedal strokes and half pedal to avoid them all together
    Otherwise, you’re going down out in the middle of who knows where.

    • @JaredHoff
      @JaredHoff  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I hear ya! I crash during this video so probably need to keep practicing 😂

    This is definitely not new. I've been riding 165's for over 6 years now. No reason to ever go back to longer cranks.

    Well, as you said, you could've just spent 100+$ for the shimano 165mm crank 😁😁 you practically swapped the shimano cranks for a sram ones 😅😅 just get the shimano cranks and sell this nonsense 500$ cranks...it's not worth it, really...you get the same performance with less money

    When it comes to cranks and applicable accessories, 5DEV is the 2nd biggest rip off in the industry… behind CaneCreek
