I have been following your videos for almost 4 years now, mostly because it's entertaining to see the process, this past month some things worked oddly and as a result I have my own screen printing press. Finally all those years of passive listening are going to pay off! Thanks! You are the best at explaining hows and whys.

That CMYK trick has saved me from buying a continuous ink system for my Epson 1400. I saw this video sometime back but I couldn't remember how you got the printer to print all the colors at the same time. I needed a refresher and I easily found this video where you explain it. Thank you for THE best screen printing videos on TH-cam! I couldn't create the work that I do without you!

I have always had to print two transparencies because the image wouldn't come out dark enough and in turn wouldn't burn as well... I had no idea the black on Illustrator wasn't a pure black until you changed all CMYK to 100%... absolutely blew my mind! Thank you for that small yet hugely game changing nugget of information! I just got started on screen printing... doing everything on a very low budget old school way, however your videos have helped me so much along the way. I appreciate it more than you know!

I've been using just plain white printer paper and coating it in baby oil after I print an image on it and it's been working so far. It's kinda annoying to get all the air bubbles out when you lay it on the screen but it does work and is a lot cheaper than transparency paper

Hi....Love your videos. I am using your technique on the printing. I have a problem with the black ink sticking to the screen when exposing. Any suggestions?
Thank you! Glad you enjoy my video work. Usually that is a humidity issue in one way or another. Could be in the emulsion or maybe the film is not dry enough. Make sure you give enough time for both the film and the emulsion to dry very well. If you have very high relative humidity then use a dehumidifier. Thanks for watching. This video was very informational. Tell me... a friend of mine is using the Canon iR2200 PCL6 printer to make his positives. Must he switch to the ones you recommended or is it still fine he must only change the type of film he uses?
+Azaria Beatz I'm not exactly sure what you're asking here. If you're asking can he use any water proof inkjet film positive rather than mine, then yes. are the film positives dense enough from a inkjet? seems like they arent as dense as compared to the old days of a KODALITH actual film positive...do Kodalith film positives still exist?
LOL... I have to chuckle because I have a degree in Fine Arts with specialization in photography and printing. So no. Real silver nitrate litho films or direct duplicating films will be pretty much 100% opaque. Inkjet film positivities cannot come close the that old school process. There are thermal film systems and image setters that can make great film like that. I think you can still get some films possibly. I'm not sure. An MRI these days could be digitally output on thermal film or something. Who knows how much film they need to print these days as well. Thanks for watching! I don't know. Perhaps. You would know more about that than I would. Do some tests and experiments to find out. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
Howdy, I just bought the Epson 1430, I want to make sure that the black ink is dark/opaque enough for exposing process. When I hold my printed artwork on my film positives to the light, the ink is not as dark. Would that be an issue?
Yes, it should be fine. It will never be 100% opaque. You should be able to barely see the light bulb itself when you hold and look through it to the light. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/

You could make film positives with vinyl sticker material and acetates. That works but may be more difficult with finely detailed art. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
Good idea about the printer and model & number, even though there is a newer version of the printer but both do the job, that is great to know. Good old reliable Epson brand.
Yeah the 1400 and 1430 are still available. The 1400 is are now since they don't make them anymore. The 1430 should still be in production. These are the 2 most common inkjet printers for start ups, intermediates and small manual shops. It works great at a reasonable price. Thanks for watching. Love all your videos and they are really helpful. I've got some questions: 1. I'm deciding which of these printers for starting out. One with 4 CMYK color ink tanks and the other with 6 CMYK LC LM color ink tanks. Are the extra 2 inks significant in screen printing or just CMYK will do? 2. For all black inks, do I literally fill in all CMYK tanks with black inks? with original black epson pigment ink?
Glad you enjoy my video work. The standard CMYK should work. For all black ink systems you need to buy special cartridges that are refillable. I sell them on my ecommerce site. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

@@CatspitProductions I ended up just buying a new printer, its printing out my film positive from illustrator just not how I would like it. Thanks for taking the time out to reply.
thanks for the info, I have a design that I made and want to put it onto shirts, I am not sure concerning how to make the design large enough for different size t-shirts, xxxl - infants. thanks again for your help

I'm mostly printing shirts for myself, will any ink jet printer work for these transparencies? Or must I invest in an expensive new printer? What are the benefits of a better printer?
Any decent inkjet printer that can handle "clear media" should work fine. The biggest benefit of a better "wide format" inkjet printer would be that you can do up to 13x19 sheets of film giving you more range as far as how big you can print. Thanks for watching. Hello Catspit. We love your videos and have learned a lot. Do you know where to purchase Vector Artwork templates? Such as for Family reunions, sport logos, for different occasions, etc?? It seems there is only Clipart software, not the Layout template like the Heat transfer websites offer? Thank you!
Hello there! I'm glad you enjoy my video work. There is a lot of template based clip art. Just do a Google search for "clip art collections" or "template clip art" and then call the seller and ask. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
Im usin Epson T1100 and I fill all the printer containers with BK color instead of "C M LM LC Y BK". And during this i have the rich black positives, even on the "Text And Image" mode. As a RIP software i use cracked free Ultra Seps plug-In for Photoshop, and its very goood...
Hi CatSpit! When you set everything to 100% CMYK and print directly from Illustrator, does it actually use all ink cartridges or just black to print? Can you confirm? Thanks!
If you use a 100% CMYK color rich black it will print all colors along with black. That's what makes it much darker and more dense. But you cannot use this trick with RIP software as it will try to separate the CMYK in the color rich black. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/
Ive been using staples transparency's and the first time I saw the film I knew it was way to light so I had him copy it onto regular paper again with Max dark and it was pitch black on the papper than I had him transfer that to the transparency ....was 3 times darker no joke it really made a difference that's how I used to do it every time

You pointed out a few types of inkjet printers. Can you use any type of inkjet printer that is large enough to print the film or does it need to be a particular type of ink system?
You can use any inkjet printer that will handle the clear film and print the size you want. No special inks needed unless perhaps you become high volume. Then there are inks we can use in specific inkjet printers to reduce the cost of inkjet inks. But you do not need that to start rolling or if you're just printing now and then. Thanks for watching! Straight forward and easy to understand video, Thanks!!! There is one thing I am confused about. I hear others on this darn internet machine say you cannot get as black or as high of quality without the BlackMax system or other all black ink systems. Does the 1430 lay down more ink with a black ink system or is the ink in the black ink systems different? Preferably I am wanting to keep the function of the 1430 to print amazing photos. Would 10-15 positives a week justify an all black system? (I think you already answered that in the video) but will half tones come out better with an all black ink system? Will RIP software perform any different with the black ink system? thanks for everything you do!!!!!!!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video. You're welcome. I don't think that is necessarily the case. There are many ways to produce an excellent film positive and other RIP software out there as well as dye based inkjet inks. That product is simply the most advertised and pushed online. As in the case of the Yudu, marketing can often make a product popular regardless of its performance. I'm sure it works fine, I'm simply pointing out the power of marketing. That includes online reviews. Usually any RIP software will lay down a bit more black ink than normal but none of them use all the print heads simultaneously. But if the product claims to block UV light then density is a non issue. It could in theory be clear if it filters UV light out. But for halftones you need RIP software anyway. Thanks for watching! I've returned to your video again. What if you have one or two different spot colours....do you still set the cmyk to 100% for each colour and do you set the artwork up with each layer having just one spot colour?
If you mean you are doing a 2 color then you have to put the colors on different layers and convert them to CMYK. That is a manual separation basically. You'll need to add another layer and create your registration marks. Then print visible layers to get each film. Thanks for watching! I just downloaded adobe illustrator, I'm using 13x19 film positives. My question is, how do I scale my canvas on illustrator to be the same size as my film positives?

Hi! I was wondering if there is a specific type of waterproof ink jet film positives to use? Is there any that are better than others? thanks for the information.
Do I really need a RIP software to print on film positives? Also, is it required that I purchase Film positive ink or can I just use the black ink that goes with the Epson 1430?
Not unless you want to do halftones or color separations. You can use the standard inks in the printer. This video shows you how to do that in the best way without RIP. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/

HI CATSPIT! look i dont have good results with my positives with spot color following your instruction i dont really know whats going on with my printer, i have the epson 1400 printer with accurip and ciss ink system, if i print positives with illustrator and selecting the epson 1400 printer doesnt get to much darkness on the positive, i try a lot of combinations but not good results, i have waterprof ink jet paper really good quality and nothing , the only way to get a middle decent positive for work not to complicated designs is print with accurip, but that is the point i dont need grey scale!! i need spot color! thanks a lot bro!!!
Yes, these instructions are for when you are NOT using RIP software. If you are using RIP then the RIP will control the printer. Also you need to have CMYK inks in the printer for this trick to work. If you have all black inks then it will not work the same way since the chips in those replacement cartridges trick the printer in different ways. So basically this is for when you print direct to the computer and still have CMYK inks in it. But you should be able to get good results with WP inkjet film and AccuRIP. Maybe you need to call AccuRIP tech support. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/
let see if a buy the normal cartriges of ink (cmyk) etc and replace the ciss for the cartridge and desactivate accurip its work maybe, but when you put cmyk cartridge only print with black right?
Cool stuff Jon, I'd like to ask, would my stencil survive my personal inkjet printer if I follow your instructions or is it still better to go to a professional print shop? Many thanks!
+Jim Thank you! I'm not sure what you mean by "stencil survive my personal inkjet printer." Can you elaborate? Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
Curious as to why you recommend the Epson 1400/1430 printer? I've read a lot of reviews, and while print quality is rated very high, there is a lot of negativity over the cost of replacement Epson ink. I understand that's how printer manufacturers make their money, but in your opinion is the quality enough to negate the cost? Do you only use black when making the negatives, and therefor the color cartridges don't need to be changed? I've also read that when one color has run out, these printers refuse to print. Great videos btw! I've watched several so far and will watch a bunch more. Thanks for your time and keep up the great work.
+Les B. It's the best most cost effective solution for starting out doing film positives. With screen printing the cost of the inkjet ink is paid for by the print job and some. I use all 6 heads when I can as described in this video and yes, the printer will not print when one color runs out. That's pretty much standard these days as it sells more ink faster. I change the cartridges as needed since I still use the printer for full size color composites as well. But if you are experiencing difficulties in making money with screen printing then you need to take a look at the big picture. It should be very easy to make your cost back and profit on any given print job. Of course there will be those jobs that just don't pay and you need to do them for customer service reasons. But if inkjet ink is a cost problem for your making screens then I'll bet something is really off in your equation. You're welcome and thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
+Les B. Les, another key benefit of the 1430 are 13x19" film capability--no attempting to piece together 81/2" wide films to do a t-shirt... I also like the opacity of the ink. I also own an Epson Workforce series and find it isn't nearly as opaque and have to double up films to be able to easily wash out the screen. Unlike the video, I use 100% key on my 1430 for most films... if I suspect I may may run into burn difficulties (mainly when doing halftones and fine text) I'll add 20% of C, M and Y which boosts the UV resistance on my halogen lit exposure unit--I do not know if this translates to LED or metal halide ... One of the faults of the 1430 is in m y case I often go for more than a week or more without doing any films as I have a substantial archive of my customers films and I also do HTV , so I have occasional clogging problems... the solution is in you reclaiming booth... If 97% isopropyl alcohol on a 'Kim' type towel doesn't clean it up, I use a little ink degradent and its good as new... I do find it odd that that the clarica inks do this as my cheapo Brother I have in my home office often goes a moth without a single print and has fewer clogging issues...
+Scott K-T Awesome info, thanks for sharing. I like the 1400 and 1430 too. Pretty simple and they work well. But yeah they can clog if you don't keep them running. I also do not like the CD printing tray. I think that was a waste of space...LOL. But for the money it makes a great film positive. Thanks for watching. just what i was searching on youtube. thank you so much. btw, i have a question, i just have black ink in my printer... there's any way that I can do it just with that? I ask this because the inks for my printer are really expensive (canon pixma pro 100) ... so maybe is more convenient to go to some place to get them done. thank you so much for the information!
You're welcome, glad I could help out. You can give it a try. But I'm not sure about how. If the printer has all black cartridges then you must have RIP or something. if you're manually pulling and have less than a couple years of printing stick to 35-40lpi on a 230-305 mesh. If you're experienced and using a manual press do 40-45lpi.

I'm not sure since I do not run a Mac. Usually it's in an "advanced" tab or option. Could be they took those particular settings off the 1430. You would likely have to contact Epson support to see about the differences between the 1400 and 1430. Make sure to use a good water proof inkjet film too. Thanks for watching. Hey, I was wondering how I could get to the options like you had at 14:20 on my apple version of Adobe Illustrator CC? I've been trying to understand better how to print separations on the Epson 1430. If you could help me out I'd really appreciate it. :)
I don't know :( I have never used that version so you would have to ask someone who is familiar with the program you are using. But if you have the same printer or the Epson 1430, it should be very similar. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
Howdy. So I want to print my shirts at home just for family and friends and not as a business where I'm printing many, many shirts. At the same time I want to do quality work without going broke on equipment and supplies. I'd like my text for example, to be neat and clean, say at about with letters measuring near 1/2 of an inch big at the smallest. And finally, I'd like to learn at home since there aren't any screen printing classes near my home. You said you have more than 400 videos, I'd need help in locating just the ones I need to get started. I wouldn't mind a one stop supply store like yours as well. Can you help me?
You can go to my channel page and click the video tab. From there you can search my videos by topic. If you ask specific questions I'll be happy to help out if I can. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/

I have been following your videos for almost 4 years now, mostly because it's entertaining to see the process, this past month some things worked oddly and as a result I have my own screen printing press. Finally all those years of passive listening are going to pay off!

Thanks for watching. hi are there any templates to help you line up artwork and text ready for print or a genrel rule?
are the film positives dense enough from a inkjet? seems like they arent as dense as compared to the old days of a KODALITH actual film positive...do Kodalith film positives still exist?
Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/
could i use this for making positive litho plates

We brazilian appreciate your videos. Thank you pal.
Love all your videos and they are really helpful. I've got some questions:

Thank you!

Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/

You shouldn't have to do that. I would call support for AccuRIP and see if your settings are correct.

Thanks for watching. can you please make a list of what I need to start a screen printing tshirt business. Also after I print the design of the computer what else do I do?
+Dieufort Apollon I can't possibly do all this in a TH-cam comment, sorry. That's a very tall order. I have over 450 screen printing videos on TH-cam and I would suggest exploring them. They will answer most all of your questions. As far as the basics of starting up this forum post should help out:

Is there special ink I should invest in for my printer? or will the waterproof inkjet film positive be enough?( It is a cheap Cannon 3500.)
Not necessarily. This trick usually works very well with a good water proof inkjet film positive like the ones I sell ;) It's only when you're printing a lot of film every day you might think about a bulk ink system with a better printer. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
just what i was searching on youtube. thank you so much.
btw, i have a question, i just have black ink in my printer... there's any way that I can do it just with that? I tried and print but the black is almost translucent even though I set the printer with the best quality.
So if you do like in this video it may still work but not necessarily through any RIP. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/
@@CatspitProductions thank you for the answer, I'll give it a try.
Nice vid, I have the Epson 1430 with CISS & dye base ink, is that ok?
Thank you. That should work. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

You're very welcome.
Can i use any kind of printer for this ??
You can use any inkjet printer that will handle "clear media." Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/
Great video! I have a question, can you draw something like a logo then import it to the adobe software and print it? Or does everything need to be made on there?
That's a complex question but basically, yes. There are different ways of getting different types of art onto the canvas. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
Great tips on settings, getting great results now from the 1400. Thanks

What type of printer can print on film? Any?
Any inkjet printer that will handle "clear media". Usually it's an Epson wide format inkjet printer. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/
hi, so to get started I have to get a software first right?
I make shirts but I have someone else make them for me but I want to make my own.
Yes, you will need some kind of graphic software to create artwork. The standard in the industry in usually Adobe Illustrator but people who are good at Photoshop use that as well. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
Hello,Thank you for your videos and tips, they are very helpful !!!
I could use your help. I am willing to purchase an Epson 1400/1430
printer, but it is not available in my country (Israel).
Could you please recommend for another A3 Epson model?
Many thanks
Avi.
I'm sorry but I cannot recommend anything because I do not know what is available to you where you are located. If you cannot order from online and have it shipped in, I would not know what is there for you to buy because I'm in the USA. Thanks for watching. If you were doing halftone dots, could you do it in illustrator/photoshop and not have a separate RIP software?
yeah, we do it all the time. just get your angles right
Thanks, I've only done one job for a friend and it was a single color halftone image. I used Illustrator and photoshop, and it turned out good, I just did't know if I was severely handicapping the quality.
if you're manually pulling and have less than a couple years of printing stick to 35-40lpi on a 230-305 mesh. If you're experienced and using a manual press do 40-45lpi.
Did you use regular inks or special for film?
No, those are the standard Epson inks. I don't print enough film anymore to have an all black ink system. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/
hey catspit can I print out an image on regular paper.and take that to a place that could copy that on transparent film to were I can print it.please get back to me.please
You could but it would result in a very poor film positive. You probably would have to double it up at least. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/
WOuld the Epson XP 15000 be a good one ? @catspitprodutions
Yes. Or the P400 and P600. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/
Do you print films for customers, If so how can we order?
No, sorry. I do not. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/
What kind of paper and printer are you use to printing?
This was an Epson 1400 with water proof inkjet film that I sell. Thanks for watching! Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - CatspitScreenPrintSupply.com/
@@CatspitProductions if I go to the printer shop do I need to have the paper flim with me or the shop could print it out like this for me. Thank you for answering
@@AS-wh5lf No, most copy places like Kinko's or Staples will have laser printers. This is water proof inkjet film and needs to be printed on an inkjet printer.
hi, is that waterproof inkjet film positive the same as the one they called today as no cut no weeding paper for heat transfer?
No, this is NOT heat transfer paper. This is a water proof inkjet film positive. We use it to make screens for screen printing. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
I really appreciate the videos you make and they have been very helpful. However, I am stumped on getting a good solid opaque black on a screen positive. My printer doesn't have a setting for transparency. However, it will print fine on a transparency sheets that I bought called "Apollo" from Office Max. The only thing is i can see some light thru the black. I also set the image to CYMK color/8bits channel. Still no good. Ive spent over $100 on different types of transparency film. Im guessing I need to buy another printer. I looked up the Epson 1430 you show on your e commerce sight and it does not show to be able to print on transparency medium in the specs. Please help. Im stumped and going broke trying to figure this out.
Thank you! You're very welcome. I'm glad you enjoy my video work. Yes, even if you call Epson they will say no. But the 1400 and the 1430 DO print on "clear media." I know this to be true. That's why I sell the 1430 for inkjet film positive printing. That's the 1400 in this video. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
Drinking game: drink every time he says Film Positive
LOL... you'll end up barfing ;)
Rowan Henseleit I legit looked for this comment after only 2 minutes
So I have an Epson Artisan 1430 and Im trying to get my film positive as opaque as possible and have had no luck in getting it dark enough. I have CMYK=100%, DocMode=CMYK, and Ultra premium glossy selected, However I do not have an option for Best photo/Photo Enhance and a High speed check box. Was wondering what you suggest I do, Im on a Mac. Thanks!
Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
i have both a 1400 and 1430. You just have to select in the advanced "photo premium glossy", "photo rpm", smoothing on, grayscale selected.

Can you help me?

what is the best software that you can use to make pictures or any design.
There is no such thing as "the best software" to use. It's all a matter of personal preference. I use Adobe Illustrator. Thanks for watching. Screen Printing Equipment & Supplies - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/
