Forgive me for commenting before I finish viewing your video but you have a marvellous point. I just viewed a video yesterday of a wonderful Canadian photographer whose images were magic but whose camera was held together with tape and the paint had worn off around the shutter button. His car had 840000 miles on it. If I hired a photographer it would be him. Gear shaming be damned.

This! I remember Annie L saying she had no clue what her camera was but it just worked good for her. Or something similar.

being a photographer at its best means being an artist. at worst, a tradesperson. I am glad to just sit at a desk to pay my bills, and click the shutter button as a hobby, and everything you said reminds me of what I heard from my great uncle, who was the professional photographer of the family when I was young.

I love being a photographer but yeah it's not all cute and wonderful. There are a lot of fantastic things too but I think this darker side is often overlooked

What has gender or age got to do with photography, amateur or professional just means unpaid or paid.
You can start or stop taking photos at anytime in your life, it's the enjoyment to oneself that is important, not whether a photo is good or bad, it's your own creation, so your own satisfaction is "could I have given that photo more!!! "
No one else's opinion really matters if your happy with your creation, sod anyone else.

Exactly..though sometimes age and more can be a factor in some people seeing your worth. Weird right?

I am retired so I don't get involved in Photography as a career. I don't care that my M6 mark II is obsolete. I really don't care if I posted a pic that I could have shot better. Some people like to say they can do better but when I see their photos, they are not any better at all.

Oh I know exactly what you mean!!! The loudest critic often has no work on display too

I'm not really seeing these as truths about photography, maybe, subjectively, some personal truths for you, in fairness I never made it past 3 minutes or so into the video, this is just not my kind of content. I will applaud you for making it and posting it though, Sharing is caring! 😎👌

As stated right at the start these are my opinions so yes it would be subjective. Thanks for partly watching the video and taking time to comment.

@@Khandiephotography for sure I get that, I just thought the "Dark Truths" you suggested in your title might be more objective realities that deserved more consideration.
There is a level of disqualification you give to the "opinions" of others shared with you, that you paint with ugly judgemental tones that might for many come across as personal attacks or impositions or "gear shaming".I have seen this with people whose identity is tied up in the brand they wear or display to posture affiliation
I have no direct knowledge of these events to speak to the validity of your characterization of those who share tips with you, but the fact that you refer to the vaine choices you made to dress for some role as an external pressure that "we feel we need to play" again externalises your subjective feelings and personal motivations. You are most definitely not alone, but i do not feel this is objectively a Photographer or Creative dilemma. These are much more personal battles that begin inside.
Many people have very pragmatic reasons for the clothes they choose to where on sight, or the hats they wear out in the sun or to aid in viewing monitors or view finders, your suggestion that "we all" presupposes that the vanity or ego that drove your decisions is shared by others or somehow was an external imposition of "the times" or environment.
This is silly, and a bit of a projection. We do all have our own journey of learning and developing but for many it is about the work, not our persona. there is a difference between people who desire to "DO SOMETHING" and those who desire to "BE SOMEONE"..
If what you do is in the service of establishing identity, than any criticisms for your process, constructive or not, "feels like" a personal attack, if it is with the objective of producing the work, then those criticisms or suggestions can be objectively considered for the value they present to the production process or the quality of your outcomes.
For sure plenty of people make subjective recommendations that validate their own choices, like the gear they use that you "need", and if you don't feel it offers value to your work then it's easy to say, I appreciate this or that , but I'm good.
Perspective plays a big role in perception and interpretation, when you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

@@bigshooter461 I can only offer my experience as to speculate beyond that would be inappropriate. As for the outfits, I am not sure if you watched thatfar as you said you on partially watched but I was talking about myself wearing such items as it was 'the look' of a photographer and deemed the fashionable vibe. As I stated the gear shaming is very evident at times and I gave an example. It happens, Thank you for taking the time to write comments. Have a great day.
