Things I wished Dr. Youn had mentioned here:
    - not only did contestants have to undergo all those procedures in 2.5 months, they also had to do intense dieting and exercise during that time as well
    - they only saw their therapist once a week
    - therapy sessions were taped by a camera crew
    - the contestants weren’t allowed to see their friends or family the entire time
    - the people at the “reveal” were the doctors and trainers on the contestants “team”
    - each episode had 2 contestants, and one of them would win the chance to compete at a beauty pageant at the end of the season while the other was sent home
    - one of the doctors from Botched was on the team of doctors in this show
    - the woman here came on only expecting a tummy tuck but was pressured into everything else after being isolated from her friends and family
    - once the cameras turned off she had a breakdown, screaming “give me my face back! I want my face back!” Because she couldnt recognize herself
    - not only does she suffer from body dysmorphia to this day, she gained all her weight back and she can’t leave her home due to severe agoraphobia
Also side note, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the “therapist” here was actually just a professional gaslighter, meant to manipulate the contestants further. Sort of like they did on “I Wanna Marry Harry”.
This show gets more and more sick the further you research it.

I screamed and cried and begged the daycare workers not to let him take me. It took some time of talking to me for him to convince me he was my dad.

As a nurse who's had cosmetic surgery I'd say cosmetic surgeons are a whole different breed ... Some would argue being ugly is "harmful" .... Not saying its right but they definitely have different standards than most people and strive for perfection. I don't think anyone with a severe lack of confidence should be consulting with them... they'll make you hate things you didnt think were a problem, HOWEVER they do great work and obviously serve a purpose to the right folks....

I really can't understand why anyone thought of making a plastic surgery competition. They take vulnerable people, put them through extensive procedures, completely change their appearance, and then pit these women against each other over their appearance. Any psychological benefit from the plastic surgery can be crushed so easily by not winning as the contestants typically have intense self esteem issues. It doesn't tackle the cause of the low self esteem, just puts a plaster on it and rips it off causing even more harm! Also, it's reality TV so there's so many people watching and will also be commenting on their appearance. Self esteem doesn't magically go away with changing your appearance to fit into what society now deems as "beautiful"😡

@@holyknight9507 Psychological vulberability is also a thing! These women are literally the most vulnerable to that kind of exploitation ("sign this an we will make you happy, we will fix everything you hate about yourself, yatta yatta yatta"). The question is whether this is ethical to do at all?! Not whether or not they are 'willing' participants. And the answer is a resounding NO! This is so psychologically distructive that it seriously harmed and endangered those women's sense of self, identify, and psychological stability. This kind of thing has serious effects on suicidal tendancies and whether those women are at risk of hurting themselves, lashing out, or endangering those around them.

This show is so problematic on many levels. Most contestants get pretty similar surgeries and the doctors don’t discuss the wishes and goals with their patients, they are just doing what they think would be the best, so that each contestant gets the look they need to take part in a beauty pageant afterwards. All those surgeries are often performed in one go and then during the healing phase they also have to be on a pretty strict diet and exercise regime, which from my understanding is a whole lot for your body. I really don’t understand how any doctor can participate in such a show.
I would love to see a reaction from you on a full episode.

I read in an article that the woman we see here gained all of the weight back and is pretty much a mess again.
The only edit I'd make to this show is that these contestants should've been screened through therapy and the language the doctors used should've been much more sensitive. There really are some cringe moments in the language and overall setup of the show.
I'm totally for plastic surgery. To me aesthetics are no different wether you want a nice couch or a nice jawline. But some people are not psychologically prepared for these procedures and this woman is a perfect example. Gotta fix the mind first. Hope she is doing better...

I watched Luxeria s reacting to this show (the whole first season), the doctors forced a lot of procedures that the contestants did not need, doctors literally gave them a big list of surgeries and new insecurities. I only saw one of them refuse a surgery and the doctors were pissed at her, everyone else got the browlift and a terrible diet. The therapist on the show was also terrible, made a lot of damages to some contestants, probably setting them all years back. Most were there to fix one or two things, the doctors preyed on their bodies like if they were manequins to practice and not people.

Someone whose friend was a makeup artist on The Swan told us that contestants had so much scarring and healing wounds, disguising it was a real challenge. So I suspect the big reveal moment was, in part, set up so the patient would not be confronted and possibly horrified by her very wounded, unfamiliar body and face. Of course this was not the first glimpse she had of her new appearance-shows like this leave little to chance. But I’ll bet the whole glamour makeup-wig-foundation garments-dress presentation was new that day, anyway.

I think with any drastic change in appearance, the first reaction when you look in a mirror is going to be "I don't recognise myself."
When my daughter was born, I stayed with her in the hospital for 10 days while she was in the NICU. I didn't see myself in the mirror at all during that time. By the time I was home with her, I'd lost 40lbs, and felt like I was seeing a stranger when I looked in the mirror. It literally didn't feel like I was seeing myself in the mirror.
I can't conceive of having so many surgeries in such a short time. I imagine dissociative reactions are fairly common in those situations.

I mean, I get giving people makeovers in a none-invasive way such as giving them a flattering hairstyle, teaching them how to apply makeup or how to style their outfits. What I hate about this show is that the plastic surgeries they do seem quite excessive at times. For example, I've seen people who got nose jobs despite having a nice nose already (and without being unhappy about their nose). At least in the version my country had, it was mostly the plastic surgeon deciding what type of surgeries the patient needed (or at least that's what it looked like). It was really bizarre to watch.

her a “nose job.” But she always said, “No, it’s my nose and if somebody doesn’t like the shape of it, too bad!” I always admired her for that. We lost her to cancer in 2014. She was only 48.

@@codsamanta You are right; it is more about the composition of the whole face. I loved my Dad's nose and my husband thinks he has a big nose, but it looks fine to me. My sister's was the right size for her face, in my opinion, and didn't look extraordinary from the front, but from the side it kinda had a hump or a hook (I can't think of any better words ☹️). It seems odd to me that she was adamant about not changing her appearance and being fine with her "given" nose, and yet later, she developed anorexia. But that was when she was a little older and had moved to Nashville.
A lot changed after she moved to Nashville. She had dreams of being a country music singer, but she started babysitting for this single guy... one thing led to another, and they ended up getting married and having my niece. That ended up in a horrible divorce (the guy is a piece of work to this day). Then there was the anorexia, alcoholism, and non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Her whole personality changed, well, a lot did, but she always had a heart of gold. Always loved animals; she was kind and generous, but could be very tough, too. She became very bitter, cynical. She fought the cancer for 12 years!
Anyway no idea why I'm opening up to a total stranger, but I liked what you said. We really do need to get past all the superficial stuff and learn to look at peoples' hearts, and try to understand where they are coming from. More compassion and more empathy would make this world so much better.

As someone who struggles with crippling anxiety, just thinking about her wait until then seems like it's building up an unimaginable amount of anxiety until that reveal that doesn't need to happen. On top of that the psychological aspect of having all those procedures without seeing the inbetween results could be dismophiating. It's an absolute nightmare, violates so many ethical standards. Luxeria has been reviewing/watch party rach episode on her channel, along with Bridalplasty and MTV's I Want a Famous Face. I'd recommend checking out a few episodes.
Shocking, but good to see how we have become more accepting and understanding as a society. She's funny, insightful and compassionate. Like watching with your bitchy best girlfriend.

My wife had a friend here in San Diego that was a contestant in that show. Her husband, a Chief in the Navy, asked me if I found his wife attractive. I told him that I don’t look at other peoples wives let alone tell them how “hot” they are. Anyways, he proceeded to show me a clip of the show and asked me again. I tried but I had to tell him that his wife was not my type and that he should not be looking for validation from other men. They still live here in San Diego, but we don’t really keep in touch

I hope and pray this reaches at least one person:
Any surgery puts you in danger of getting permanent pain. Recent studies show that one of four patients suffers from chronic pain after a surgery, and many of those are in so much pain that they can not function, work or have a decent life. Why? Because when you cut across several nerve threads, they will try to grow together again, and so will the skin. These nerve threads gets caught in the scar tissue where they get pinched permanently and that will cause everything from light pain or no pain to excruciating pain. One in four patients gets pain from old scars and worst is horizontal cuts as they cut across hundreds of nerves. I was one of those that got excruciating pain from a butt lift and a breast reduction. I am in constant pain, it makes me so tired that I can’t do anything. As the nerves fire off non stop the entire nerve, pain receptors and brain gets majorly stressed and fekked up, so now my brain translates any nerve signal as pain. My muscles around the chest and back tense up so much that it is hard to breath, I can not walk any more either. I am having the best neurologist in Europe treating me and they have done so for the last twenty years. A serious amount of patients with this type of pain end up committing suicide because they can’t take it any more.
If you need surgery, to prevent you from dying, getting seriously I’ll or complications, of course you need to do that surgery. I’m talking about non essential surgery done because you want to lift your self esteem.
Surgeons will NEVER tell you about this side effect. A side effect that hits one in four patients. And as it usually hits when the scar is finished healing, you have said goodbye to that surgeon months ago, so they don’t hear about it. As most doctors have very limited knowledge about nerves and how cutting then can lead to a series of extreme bodily dysfunctions, they will never tell you this. Neurologists have for years tried to speak to surgeons about this, but they will not listen to anyone that might take away their patients. Surgeons are in general seen upon by themselves as the alpha dog in the pack, neurologists aren’t even in the pack.
As my body now translates every signal as pain, as I’m constant in pain, the treatment is that I once a month get 100-200 injections of xylocain, Marcain, and some Botox. Yes, you heard it right, 200 injections. That numbs the worst areas and let my body have some hours to reset itself. I also are put to sleep while I get morphine intravenously over two hours each month. I do not have a number for how many times I have wanted to die as I have no life. I was extraordinary super woman once, won National and international championships, could do anything you put me to, became known for whatever I did as I had several skills and where I didn’t have any, I got them by training and reading up. I loved the outdoors, hunted, fished, danced, painted, wrote books, photographed, travelled the world and spoke five languages. Now I have spent the last seven years in bed looking at internet or the ceiling. So I ask if you that if you ever want to do a non essential plastic surgery, please ask yourself if you would take the chance of a life filled with so much pain too. One in four gets it. I did my surgeries to get better self esteem and look better, but laying here staring at the ceiling I have absolutely no use for that self esteem. I would do ANYTHING to have just one day without pain, or one hour. Self esteem is overrated, you can achieve it without a scalpel too, and without ant risks or side effects. So please consider this if you are planning on a nip and tuck, and if you have in general a lot of pain without finding any cause to it, look for a scar, it might be the villain.

It was nice to hear you commenting on her mental health. I dont know why Im still surprised by these kinds of comments because everything I've seen by you shows me you are a genuinely caring person (which not everyone in the field of cosmetic procedures is). But still it's very ethical of you to consider whether or not a client is in the mental space to be making the choice for cosmetic surgery as opposed to needing therapeutic counseling for current issues then coming back later.

I totally agree with you Dr. Joun on many points. First I do believe it’s unethical even though she probably signed a consent to do all this openly. I would think that most people would want privacy to be able to come to terms with how their appearance has changed privately. Second of all I do agree that it’s contrived most likely because it’s for television ratings and the dramatic affect it appears to have been set up to have. In my opinion it’s not in the patient’s best interest overall. She appeared to be able to handle it well but who knows what she was really feeling and I’m sure if there was any uncomfortableness she would not have felt comfortable revealing that because the shows need for popularities are going to override what she needs. Also grieving takes time especially the type of loss she experience with her husband passing away and also losing all that weight. In my professional Pinyan she would need more time to process through that grief before going through that many surgeries. Again I feel like you do that it’s contrived strictly for the shows ratings and ultimately her emotional needs took a backseat. Totally my assumption on all this but luckily it appears she had a good outcome so I’m glad for her on that

I remember watching this show in my early twenties, when I had no wrinkles and had never known weight gain, and after the show I’d go to the mirror and think about all that could be done to “fix” me. Thankfully the show was canceled, I had no money, and I am a weenie when it comes to pain, so I now just look like an older, wiser version of the young girl I was.

Yeah, wow. I've never seen The Swan, but that did look psychologically messed up. I'm glad Dr. Youn mentioned her reaction. When they said she hadn't seen herself (and therefore any progress along the way) since she began, I immediately thought "her first reaction is going to be 'who the heck is that in the mirror?' and not in a good way." It would be weird to just see someone else's face looking back at you one day! Even if there is a resemblance.

  • @ritakus9871

I'm wondering, how many of these surgeries on a person such as her, would you have done at the same time? She needed every single one of those procedures to remove excess skin, even her face was droopy. And of course she wouldn't have recognized herself, the hairstyle and makeup alone would cause such a reaction. Most people don't even recognize themselves when they've lost so much weight when they were that heavy, let alone having all these procedures performed. Anyway, it would be nice to see a video of you breaking down what procedures you would do first, and how many of them you would combine together, and how long would be needed to complete the entire process in a safe manner, and let's just say the person was mentally healthy?

I had a consultation about a breast lift and possible implants last week. the doctor said he would not suggest doing a lift and implants at the same time as he believes i will probably be happy and satisfied with the result of just the lift and wouldn‘t need the additional lifelong commitment to the implants and all the complications that come with it. This is the opposite, i‘m kind of shocked that they would not let her look at herself after each surgery, truly recover and adjust to the changes about her body.
