    The problem with Radiant Black is that it doesn't fully commit to the Super Sentai/Power Rangers setup. It's really just a standard western superhero story with only a few superficial elements of the Japanese hero team sprinkled on top. Which isbtoo bad because the tropes of sentai are a lot of fun and it would be nice to see them explored from an American perspective.

      I second this. My other "Problem" is that is going for the Long Run just like Invincible, so i can't really recommend it to my friends for now.

      I couldn't get past the 1st issue of radiant black. The character motivations and overall pacing were boring to me, which is ironic cause Local man despite having a very similar premise was able to hook me from the get go. I recently checked out GO! go! Loser ranger which so far has been a lot more engaging modernized take on the whole Sentai concept.

    • @RockoEstalon
      @RockoEstalon 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@metalmaniac123kill I really like Radiant Black, but it waits a while to have it's twist. That said Go, Go Loser Ranger is far superior and I love the meta-commentary it has regarding both the Sentai industry and it's fans without going into lazy self-referential humour like they do in the MCU.

  • @ChrisBurton1
    @ChrisBurton1 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    I read the first 20 issues or so of Radiant Black a while ago and really enjoyed it.
    When I first started reading it I thought "this is charming but almost laughably generic" and wasn't feeling it, but after a succession of twists and, in later issues a further exploration of the lore underpinning that world, I eventually grew to love it. It ended up having one of the best single issues I've ever read.
    Admittedly I *am* of that exact age where I grew up with that early tokusatsu-adapted-import boom of the 90's so those nostalgic widgets do hit hard for me, but I think its a solid superhero book regardless.

    F.Y.I., Allan . . . GEN-13 was *never* published by Jim Lee's 'Homage' imprint, as you stated. It was always a WildStorm title, firmly planted in that superhero universe. Homage, on the other hand, served as an alternative home for creator-owned books *not* produced by Jim Lee (ASTRO CITY, DESPERADOES, LEAVE IT TO CHANCE, and ZERO GIRL, for example). These titles did not fall under the auspices of Image proper - as they would have, otherwise - but were instead controlled by WildStorm's editorial board. So it was essentially a line of vanity projects, the fate of each being determined by editors working under Jim Lee. Homage was later rebranded as "WildStorm Signature Series," continuing the imprint's purpose with its sole survivor, ASTRO CITY, until that title joined the Vertigo line. The Signature Series then became defunct, folding to its spiritual counterpart, 'Cliffhanger.'

    The new thing I just picked up that I'm liking so far is a Dark Horse series called Dawn Runner. So far it looks like a version of Neon Genesis Evangelion that's less government conspiracy and more corporate conspiracy. It's really pretty to look and and invokes a lot of warm memories of Pacific Rim.

    Great video. I'm reading most of the titles you covered here. (BTTWNS, Bloodrik, Local Man and Blue Book). If I had a book to recommend, it would be Vengeance is for the Living published by Floating World Comics. 4 issue story of revenge that really captures the vibe of 70's exploitation films. Issue 1 just released, and I covered it on my channel, which is amateurish to the quality work on Strange Brain Parts.

Travelling to Mars is about to finish up, Rumpus Room just has. But really I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on any of his work. Couple of Image books, That Texas Blood is well worth anyones attention, the recent spin off mini The Enfield Gang Massacre also. Tom King's Love Everlasting is fun too. Finally now Usagi Yojimbo is back at Dark Horse and the first mini (Snow and Ice) as just finished its a good a time as any to check in on that classic as well. Recently I’ve been reading the Energon Universe’s Cobra Commander.
    Coming not knowing anything about GI JOE, it was a bit confusing. It almost felt less welcoming with newcomers compared to Duke, as it introduces concepts I felt I need to know prior.
    Despite this I’m enjoying this series starting the central villain, and his brutal and mysterious nature adds to the intrigue of the story.

But I couldn't tell whom was whom except for the obvious ones. I also buy Holly Roller by image. It's goofy fun. I like it. The Wesley Dods Sandman series was great. Local Man´s homages go beyond 1998. Localman Gold heavily features 00s and even present-day Image heroes, even this week´s Bad Girls has real characters and book treats multiple Image "events" as canon without changing anything. Curisoly flipping through all that early-to-miss 90s shit to understand Wildstorm lore better in the 00s finally paid off for me! So I would 100% say that you need to know the basics of what the comic is riffing on to go beyond a surface-level understanding, just how Watchmen and Kingdom Come only fully "click" once you know what the context there is. Doubly so to understand the comic´s art style and designs. Those 90s fonts sure have a style to them. Writer Tony Fleecs loves 90s Image and considers them artistically valuable and very dynamic. He goes over that in this week´s Comics Conspiracy podcast. Pretty sure that it is his favorite period in comics or at least very high up there.
    I am hardly on that level but good comics were produced by them after Shattered Image in 1996. Mostly at WildStorm but DC of course bought them in late 1998. The Moore and Ellis books made there are better than most (and Moore´s case all) of the things they produced over the decade and a half. The first few years of Spawn are also very fun despite the questionable writing. The good kind of "I am 13 and this is deep" schlock. Gen 13 sucks though. Not even Gail Simone could make them work in the 00s. The original and ultra-nihilistic DV8 side book is cool though.

      I'm honestly glad to hear that Image Comics has a story that feels like a celebration of it's history. I remember talking about how I would want something like that to exist through the lens of a Youngblood comic taking place 30 years after it's release date.

    This month my favorite read has been The One Hand, and The Six Fingers. Two separate minis, telling two sides of a single story, from Ram V & Dan Watters respectively. It's a crime noir in the far future, yet still very familiar looking earth, The One Hand is from the detectives point of view, and Six Fingers from the potential killers. Fire and Ice (by Dynamite, not Marvel) has been a good adaptation so far. Rare Flavours continues to be a joy. For those that don't mind a lot of text, Something Epic is worth checking out, new arc starting now with issue 8. Petrol Head art, especially color & character design, is awesome, story is so-so. Hexagon Bridge was an interesting 5 issue series that ended in Jan, really cool color pencil style art, kind of out there sci-fi story. and agree with others who've noted Dawnrunner is solid.

    Oh and current recommendation, I'd really like to hear your thoughts on current stories in The Galaxy's Greatest - 2000ad. So many great stories to choose from but anything by Dan Abnett, so he has new trade collections easily available for Brink, Lawless and new The Out volume isn't far off I believe. All simply brilliant. Some good modern Dredd out there so Kenneth Niemand's (who he?) Penitent Man has just been released and there's a digital bundle for Rob Williams and Henry Flint - possibly the best artist working in comics today - recent A Better World which was just brilliant. Finally since the latest Thistlebone story has just wrapped up a good time to check that out and the first two volumes are readily available. People can often get too easily distracted by what 2000ad was, and so miss the amazing comics its producing now.

    Appreciate the video, I will try local man. I truly enjoy the new Conan series in the best Conan since the old days of marvel. But at the end of the day I’m mostly disappointed in anything new, independence which I’ve really been diving into more and more rarely keep me past a couple issues. I just miss good old fashion heroic storytelling at a faster pace than today’s books, can’t stand one story to take 6 to 7 issues like they always do anymore. So I just find myself mainly spending my money on back issues.

    Not really a new one, but you might like The Ogre Gods! It was plenty weird. It's about these inbred royal giants who feed on their human subjects! It may not get finished since the creator passed.
    Also, Lifehouse was good if you like psychedelic retro. It was based on the music of The Who.
    Blue Flame has a similar washed-up superhero-trying-to-get-his-life-back plot to the two you mentioned but I liked that one.

    In no order:
    ~Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees: Holy fcku. Intense and disturbing. And, it looks worth checking out once a trade is released.
    ~Faceless & the Family: I totally vibe with that theme. The art is compelling for sure. Will most likely check it out.
    ~Radiant Black: Power Rangers never clicked with me, and otherwise the story seems just okay. Based on your & others' reviews, probably not my thing.
    ~Blue Book: Interesting. Wasn't there a movie about the Hills with Rick Moranis & Cindy Williams? I dunno why but those actors are who I always think of whenever mentions of early UFO encounters
    come up.
    ~Local Man: That looks like a riot, for nostalgia reasons both good and bad. I think I'd dig it.
    ~Bloodrik: I see what you mean about it being reminiscent of woodcut prints, and therefore needing heavier ink. That would really be a style worth playing with in my opinion.
