my friend says st anger has rubber tone and i guess hes right but i love that vertical pick scraping sound they get on some of the riffs

I think the reason you can hear the background is because they wore headphones on full volume so you can hear the other instruments

Not here. It's just that I can't get rid of every other sound without making the guitar too muddy. Aaand btw, when recording albums tracks go through gating process to cut off all unnecessary sounds below certain level, at least after the 90s.
