One advantage for .22mag is while certainly adequate for self defense in a pistol, it becomes a real screamer out of a rifle . So if you want a matching caliber it's hard to beat. Also from every video I have watched the Remington Yellowjacket expands the best out of .22lr pistols

When they functioned correctly even Remington golden hollow points expanded well for small game.
CCI MINI Mag HPs are pretty consistent, accurate and reliable.
Expansion is difficult if not unlikely in really short barrels like you said maybe Yellow jackets or possibly CCI Stingers.

I have carried a 950 BS Jetfire 25 acp during the mid-90s to the early 2000s pocket carry in a DeSantis leather trickster pocket holster... All the test I've seen 22 long rifle and 25 ACP out of the same type of gun are about equal...BUT .25 FMJ has better penetration than the 22 long rifle penetrating hard barriers... So for penetrating the skull I choose 25 ACP

I'd never underestimate 22s of any type. That kind of penetration means they'd still be traveling fast when hitting bone or tendon. The fragments make small leaks everywhere. They don't call them the surgeon's nightmare for nothing. A shot to the face with any of those tend to be a casket closer too.

Not to be gruesome but the murder case here is Az where the girl killed her boyfriend but posted it on her social media while she was doing showed what a .25 to the head does. It wasn't much of anything so she had to stab the guy a ton of times. Sorry to be so dark but I figured I would take a .22 any day over a .25 I do own both so kinda speaking from having shot both. The .25 travels at 750 fps so it's pretty slow also. I have a .22 air rifle that shoots around 1000 fps I think it would be deadlier than the .25 acp.

Velocity from a rifle barrel about 1400fps with 70gr bullet - slow enough so jacketed bullets are NOT required to keep cost down.

I just watched a video where a .25ACP was loaded with hollow points. It expanded in the same gel you have. Now, the clear gel will not expand some hollow points. Buffalo tested CCI Uppercut in the clear and it did not expand. Another guy tested it in the brown gel and they expanded like they should. So, the type of gel makes a difference. I believe the FBI uses the brown gel, Ballistic Gel.

At close range, with open sights, he put a single 40 grain bullet right between the eyes. And, as a boy, I was absolutely astounded at the way even the biggest Bucks would just drop to the ground.

    • @frankbrowning328

The 25 ACP is really the best choice because the ammo is a centerfire cartridge and centerfire priming is far more reliable than rimfire. When shooting 22LR and 22Mag you'll get a whole lot more shells that don't go off (and show a good strike to the rim) than with any centerfire such as the 25 ACP + the Beretta 950 is less than 10 oz and carries 9 shots. 8 in the mag + 1 in the chamber.

I have the same Beretta 25 cal jetfire and also an NAA 1 1/8 that shoots 22lr or 22 wmr. I got the NAA about 15 years ago and the Jetfire about 7 years ago. I set a goal to shoot the NAA at 5 yds with free right hand (no aiming allowed), cocking trigger with only same hand (no using left to cock), and shoot all 5 rnds in no more than 3 seconds. Most important of all was to hit a paper plate with all 5 rnds. I practiced for about 2-3 months before I could finally consistently hit the plate in 3 sec for all 5 rounds. Took about 15 boxes of 50 or 750 rnds total. I allowed myself to already have the NAA in my hand with arm hanging down my side....so the 3 seconds did not include drawing from a holster. No way I could make the 3 sec if I had to draw (it took about 2 sec just to draw the gun). Anyhow, after finally getting to be a pretty good shot with the NAA, I felt confident that I could stop most threats with that little revolver...basically shooting whatever in the head. I have not done the same with my Jetfire....frankly, too damn much work and lazy I guess. BTW, my usual cayyy is eithe a SIG 9mm P938 OR a larger Glock 27 40 cal.

Great information, thank you! My opinion is that a .22LR needs to be a solid bullet to penetrate deep enough and the Ruger LCP2 is one of the best automatics. If you want deeper penetration and ballistics go with the NNA .22 magnum and a Vmax bullet. I bailed on the .25 years ago because it sometimes doesn’t have the velocity to even penetrate a leather jacket. I bailed on the Beretta Tomcat .32ACP because of frame cracking issues long term. The NNA .22 mag is the lightest and most powerful deep carry and the .380ACP is my CCW❤️

"Skip Trace" down below made a comment about shooting a .25 Glazer. Nobody talks about those much anymore, but I think that it would be pretty cool if you could find some Glazers and do a smaller caliber, say up to .380, test and comparison in the gel. Love your common man approach to doing these videos. You present your stuff warts and all, and I surely appreciate ya, brother!

Guns for CC.....🤔. I don’t care what it is. Stay strapped or get clapped. I’d take any gun over no gun when my life or my wife’s life depends on it. I got my mom a TCP .380 that couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn at 10 yards. But you know what? It’s mighty fine when the crap hits the fan and you need to pop off a few at 10 feet. A gun in hand, no matter the caliber, is better than nothing. Good vids brother.

I have both of those guns that I recently acquired. I've had a little 22 lr derringer that I've carried for years, it's what I carry when I'm not carrying a gun. Have to shoot the other two before I'll carry them. Keep up the good videos.

Good study. I have two derringers; one a Colt Lord, the other a Cobra. The Colt Lord only shoots 22 shorts, but is actually pretty accurate, and can be easily concealed in a wallet holster. The Cobra is a over/under and fires a 22 LR, but is not real accurate, and not super reliable. One barrel only fires about 50 percent of the time, but the other fires every time, so if I get it set up to where the right barrel fires first, I'm good for at least one shot at close range (within 10 feet) for a 5 inch shot group. I also have a Heritage Barkeeper, and it has the option of firing a 22 Mag. This pistol is nice, with a good trigger pull, and is very accurate, even out to 15 meters, and could hit center mass of an average person consistently at 25 meters. It is more concealable than most handguns, but not near as concealable as the derringers. If I am in what I call "condition light green" I carry the Colt; if it goes to "condition yellow" I up it to the Barkeeper, due to the accuracy and a little more power of the 22 Mag. I am not surprised by the performance of the Mag in this video, given that its muzzle velocity is 1800 fps. I was surprised at the wound track of the 22 LR, though. Again, good video, thanks for the effort.

My capt carries the 950 minx in the 22 short. I carry the jetfire 25 acp. It is all about shot placement. I sometimes carry a 9 shot 22lr snub nose revolver. My next larger off duty weapon is the Tomcat 3032 32 acp. Plenty powerful....remember “shot placement”

We had a fellow near me, get arrested for killing ELK with a .22mag rifle....WILD Elk...like others have opined, the increased powder load of the Mag is wasted on that tiny cylinder/barrel combo. I too have one of the Beretta .25's, which while not overwhelming, when needed in a 'pinch' is tell a hell of lot better than the proverbial 'sharp stick' ;) Lastly, the capability of the .22LR, especially those hotter loads for specific uses, continues to amaze. I know of a 'mob' hitter, who specialized in urban attacks using of all things, a hollow point .22 short shooting mouse gun (I was a Leo). He would take out targets with 'contact' shots, often in large crowds which masked the noise, and provided him loads of cover under which to 'retire' from the scene. For myself, I used for years, as a backup, or even tertiary, firearm, a very slim/small .32 ACP, shooting jacketed HP's. It worked.

The NAA .22 LR w2ith Federal Punch Ammo has great ballistics.
It keeps up with the .22 Mag in speed and penetration.
I do carry my NAA .22LR when I can't pocket carry a larger pistol.
With the Punch ammo, I feel that I am well protected if I need to use the revolver.

25acp for the win before watching the video.
I’ve done these tests. 22mag screams out of a rifle but sucks out of a 2” barrel. John Moses browning literally designed the 25acp to be more stout and more reliable than both 22’s

I had a chance to shoot a friend's Berreta a few months ago and I was very impressed with it. Because of the light recoil and light crisp trigger, it was very easy to just dump the mag into the target. I had been taught to despise the 25 acp but I was definitely impressed.

I think the 22 mag depends a lot on the ammo. You can get fmj and you can get heavier ammo 50gr
And now you have short barrel designs to. I have used the naa as a backup or boot gun off and own.
A single 6 has worked great as a hog trap gun. I use win 40 gr fmj and shot them in the head.
I have a buddy that really only hog hunts with the 22 mag both in rifle and revolver.
Me I rather have something bigger with lose hogs.

I dont carry a .22 or .25 just because the LCP .380 is almost as small as those guns. I would carry one as a backup if I didn't already own LCP.
I do own a little .25 Baby Browning, but it used to be my Mom's gun so I'm a little sentimental about it.

All three have about the same performance. Their advantage is that if you miss the bad guy at point blank range, the noise and muzzle blast will cause most intruders to shift into overdrive on the way out the door. Be prepared to back the little guys up with a sawed off twelve gauge. Or maybe a 34 inch piece of ash with a HANK AARON logo burned into it.
