RM and Suga did get a lot of hate when they first got into BTS, especially from their former peers (underground rappers). Those rappers thought they sold out when they became Idols. ( K-pop group members are called Idols). They accused RM and Suga of being girls when they go on stage waring make-up. These kinds of comments made RM question himself if he really was an artist as he saw himself, or if he was an Idol as many others saw him. But Idols typically don’t write or produce their own music, like BTS does.
BTS also got a lot of hate because they didn’t come from one of the 3 big K-pop companies and still made it big. Xceleste made a very good video about this. It’s called “BTS hardships”. This may help you understand. Also the video from Taylor Nakamoto “a guide to BTS members, the Bangtan 7” is a very good video to get to know more about BTS. We would watch those videos with you, no matter how long they are 😃. Thank you for this reaction 💜💜

This song is aimed at Bfree and a few others who in the younger days of BTS throw hate and publicly disrespect and said some awful things about Suga and RM. Saying things like, you are girls not rappers going against hip hop by getting makeup done, that they are not real rappers. And a bunch of other horrible things on live radio in front of them. This song is RM's diss track to them. Even the name of the song is wordplay. Calling them a joke. And at the end the "hit me" and telling all haters to try and out rap him. Like saying try me I'll end you.

Calling a detractor dandruff is calling him a flake and yes elastane controls dandruff.
This song has an interesting leadup. YG Entertainment, one of the Big 3 Corporations, at the 2014 MAMA awards in front of thousands of RM's peers and a huge tv audience sent up their rookie rapper to perform. He rapped a series of disses on RM's name and BTS. YG's new group was hip hop and publicly knocking BTS, a small corporation year-old hip-hop group, was a cheap shot as it did not tread on the other big corporations. YG felt it was a safe move to clear commercial listening space.
RM when questioned by the press about the diss, which by attention became just what YG wanted, said that is just what rappers do. A few months later RM released Joke which was in essence a rap battle response. He finishes (you're a) Joke with "hit me" meaning if you got better come at me. The rapper Bobby didn't. A couple years later he would stand next to his boss who issued a weak public apology which echoed RM's initial press response saying that's just what rappers do.
One sad thing is Bobby actually is a very talented rapper who was also used as an attack dog on other small company rappers but never on a big company rapper. RM catching shit from a lot of quarters handled things professionally. Yes, particularly early hip hop tracks of BTS members and BTS may have a disproportionate lean in on haters. However, I think this reflects their professionalism. He and BTS use rap and not the press to air their grievances. And certainly, early on they were maligned in the press spotlight more than any other group.

Yeeeeeei, the crazy side of RM. He had a lot to say back then to the haters and rappers who criticized him. Now he doesn´t have anything to say to them , thats why his next mixtape was a beautifule piece of art (calm, amazing beats and beautiful lyrics). I love this side of RM. This song is a Joke, the lyrics are without much sense, he did this just to prove his abbilities. And man, he can rap.

You have to remember you are watching content that spans 10 years so things BTS wrote about in the early years isn't necessarily what they write about now. Saying that, BTS still get hate and racism even today. I try and stay away from it, it hurts to much too see it.
Their song Paradise has beautiful lyrics.💜

The haters he happens to be referring to are not competition necessarily, but they are "rappers". They're from the underground scene who dissed him and suga back in the day.

You're right in a way that this is towards the competition as well as haters, but it's because they were one in the same. Most of the time, the competition they're rapping toward aren't other kpop groups, but rather other underground rappers that were heavily disrespecting and demeaning them when they first started. Their early songs, like Joke and Agust D, are directed more towards other rappers (who were occasionally in kpop groups, but more often than not weren't involved in that scene).
There's a clip from an panel that RM and Suga attended soon after they debuted (2014 if I remember right) in which the moderator criticized them for "selling out" by joining a kpop group, before another rapper at the panel cut in and called them girls for wearing makeup. There were also a ton of rappers, even former friends of theirs, that would essentially say things like "oh, they can't actually say they're rappers anymore because they're in a boyband now."
For RM and Suga, who have loved rap and hip hop almost their entire lives (I would highly recommend Hip Hop Lover by BTS, by the way! It has the fast rap that you seem to like, but instead of being aimed at haters/competition, it's just them dedicating an entire song to their love for hip hop, shouting out tons of their inspirations, and sharing their personal stories!), who sacrificed a lot to be able to pursue their passion for music (I would also definitely recommend The Last by Agust D to hear a little more about that. He mentions his broken shoulder in that song, which he got because he had to work extra jobs even after joining BTS in the beginning since he couldn't afford to pay for college otherwise, and one night when he was out working a delivery job, he got hit by a car), and who were very well versed and respected on the scene beforehand, it's understandable that this treatment frustrated them greatly.
(Side note, I do want to say that as a woman, I see why you were a bit iffy on the part of this song where RM mentions women, but it doesn't bother me personally because the whole group and company both apologized not long after this song released for doing so, and RM specifically has been very open about the fact that he learned from these mistakes. He mentioned soon after the apology that it really stressed him out to think that he had been rude or disrespectful, and so he would have Women's Studies professors look over the lyrics he wrote to make sure he wasn't perpetuating harmful stereotypes, he's written multiple feminist songs in the years since, and he's been very outspoken about his respect for his fans, who he knows are a female majority. Anytime an interviewer would try to paint ARMY as crazy fangirls who try to hurt them or anything similar, he's been very quick to disagree and instead highlight the positives and respect that he's seen over the years in our defense [here's a video with a few examples if you were curious! th-cam.com/video/hD8f08M_p9I/w-d-xo.html ].
He can't really go back and change these songs since they're already out in the world, but it's been almost a decade since he's written anything like this, and he's proven time and time and time again that he fully recognized where he went wrong and has made so many strides towards bettering himself in many areas, so going back to lyrics like this now doesn't bother me because I know it's not reflective of his thoughts now. If you want some songs that are still really good but are more positive in their view towards women as well, I would recommend 21st Century Girl, Boy With Luv, and Trivia: Love [which is another RM solo song])
Sorry for the super long comment, hope you're having a good day!

This will be long but its a little summary of him
RM is an artist i respect alot and have followed specifically.
You gotta check his mixtape titled RM (joke is one of its tracks) with many layered meaning /references etc
It was amazing and also his new one mono was incredible.
His collaborations with lil nas X (str) , Walle , Warren G, krizz kaliko, FOB , Honne and many korean artists
He is very very talented from childhood and was famous in ug hip hop seen.
Writes and raps in 3 + laguages , is amazing lyrically, and has a big hand behind the formation and success of BTS
He was the reason behind the group formation. He is very very imp . Behind the success,
This is carrying many phrases, double triple meanings and rhymes both connecting eng and korean . You'll know more how he is a lyrical genius along the way.
He is very good at lyrics like that.
He is known for his work in south korea music scene . Esp. In hip hop.
So abt Korean hiphop scene ... RM aka rap monster was active and famous in underground rap scene since teen years old , he had a big fanbase then as well and they were upset when he became an idol ; he is called son by the biggest k hiphop artist tigerJk who he has collaborated with also RM calls him dad as well
His RM mixtape is on bts soundcloud and he is the only k hiphop artist to ever make to spins ww hiphop albums list that year and till now
His 2nd mixtape mono is a beautiful masterpiece recently released, you should check both out, as well as his collaborations
He has 200 track credits on his name and mono has >122 itunes 1 as first and only asian artist, classified at ss tier rapper in sk , (among the 3 in bts only ss as well)
He has outgrown his rap monster stage name but it was a part of his journey and changing it to RM was his decision because he thought the older name restricted his growth (to rap only) , we respect his decision, he is an amazing amazing artist!

It is actually towards his haters (not his competition) in the old days who criticized him and Suga for becoming Idols. Both started as underground rappers before joining Big Hit. The haters (other underground rappers) publicly tried to humiliate them, saying they were going against hip-hop and calling them girls.

Kpop is ruthless... so is sport and their fandoms (dark side is sadly global thing, bulling, hate, fake occusions, scamming...). I have allways think that k-pop is pretty similar than football (sport), fans - fanchants, collect merch, support fav with passion, fanwars... and being trainee - coming different places, many of them liv dorms, practis, play, go school, practis again together, eat, sleep, laugh, cry, hug, slapping each other, tired, hopefull, desperate together, give their youth to their dreams and maybe never make it. And everybody (kpop and sport) wants 'The dream team', where everyone is on point. Sorry my english and greetings from the edge of Europe

Yes Elastin is a shampoo but you won't really understand the lyrics because this is a JOKE. He is saying "you're acting as if you're Lee Kun-hee" Lee Kun-hee served as the chairman of Samsung Group (as you know Samsung is a South Korean brand). And I think he is making fun of rappers who are thinking rapping fast makes them to good rappers but there are no good lyrics behind, they're just rapping fast and with his 148 IQ RM is a genius writer.
7:33 Joke is a song of his Mixtape so those lyrics were literally Asap lyrics. If you want to understand the Korean culture in the lyrics then watch an explaination video

You have to have love in order to hate. I'm so proud of BTS for seeing that the LOVE they receive is by far stronger than the hate that has been thrown at them. If you let hate get to you, it is so much harder to see the big picture. BTS ARMY is the bigger picture! We have the ability to drown out hate with love. That is what BTS does. That is the message they give. The hate they have gotten has been the fuel that shot them upwards. That hate may have hurt them...... But it also made them. So the JOKE is on them. ARMY💪💜!!!!

as some other comments have said, this song was a reaction to a lot of the commentary that BTS was getting at the time. There were rappers saying that RM had no skill and couldn't rap fast. So he wrote this song and it's title of "joke" is literal. The lyrics have no sense to them; they're written to sound good to the beat.

    Thank you for the video!
RM has stated in an intervju that this song has no particular meaning, since the other songs on his mixtape has alot of meaning in them he wanted to do one with just wordplay.
but there is actually a hidden meaning in this song, the lyrics are a mockery for those who think that they are the greatest just because they can rap fast.
he is litterally saying "yeah watch me, i can do that to. but that doesn't mean anything if you have nothing real to say."
    he is genius.
RM doesn't use the "women" lines anymore as get got alot of backlash for it and has grown from it.
if you want more i highly recommend his mixtape "MONO" and the song "Throw It"
    Borahae!💜

ARMY: we need to stop recommending Joke as people’s introduction to RM’s solo work. It is not a representative example, and, as it was a a stream-of-conscience process focusing on flow, hard for people, especially with no context, to understand.
Pretty much any other solo would be better- I recommend Do You (great message) or Persona, bc you can see his intellect and lyricism as well as flow and rap talent.

@Ali G I agree with you... I do understand that Armys want reactors to know that RM has good flows, cadences etc... But I have seen a few reactors who missed understand RM's rap capabilities especially how genius he is in lyricism because they couldn't make sense the meaning or lyrics in 'Joke' because they don't know the background of the song... Just my 2cents ✌✌💜

It’s called Joke. Many of the things he said were demonstrating how some rappers just rap about nothing but they do it fast and rhyme so it sounds good, but meaningless.
