Hi everyone! Here are a few different drawings of trees I recently worked on! I hope this tutorial video helps out in some way. It's a bit of a longer video, but drawing trees like this is something I really enjoy and I wanted to share the process with you. Be sure to let me know what you think. And also let me know if you have any suggestions for future drawing videos. Thank you so much for the amazing support! Hope you're having an awesome day. :) -Chris
I know this video is old but I just found it today and I want to say thank you. I was a semi-talented artist as a child but life decided drawing would take the back burner for a while. I'm now in my 40s and I recently picked up drawing again. Thankfully the restart hasn't been too painful. My much older hand gets tired quicker but I haven't lost my basic skill set. Videos like this are so relaxing and informative it keeps the fire burning for me. I've find great joy in drawing (again) and I hope others do too!
@MrManAmong Well said. :) A lot of people can relate to your comment. I also thought this was a really good video. Amazing what a person can do with an ordinary pencil (or better yet, a few actual drawing pencils) and a drawing pad from the dollar store. If nothing else the sketches make for great Birthday/Get Well/Anniversary etc Cards! People love them, b/c it shows a bit of effort, at least more than just buying a generic card. Good luck with your art.
I used to have a art teacher that would say "practice doesn't make perfect. It makes progress" and I've never found that more true until I tried drawing nature
On the last video of yours Chris, I wanted to know where I was going wrong with drawing trees. Then presto, here you are showing us how. My grandmother was the expert at drawing and painting trees, she was born in 1888 from London. Now I hope I can draw a tree just like her. Thank you so much for the help and huge hugs from Australia.
I always thought/said i couldn't draw so i set out to prove myself wrong. This tutorial was great, as a brand new budding sketcher this tutorial has helped me enormously. My trees don't look anything as good as yours but i am so proud of what you have helped me to sketch. This has developed my confidence and desire to sketch even more. Thanks!
Hi Chris, I just wanted to thank you for this video and so many of your others. I am a rank amateur who just started sketching a month ago (I'm an evolutionary biologist and historian of science by trade). I've always told people that I can't draw, and there is no point in my even trying, because my brain does not work that way. It took 57 years, but I realized how wrong I was. Now I am learning to sketch for the love of it, and as means of pure relaxation. Your videos have been extraordinarily helpful on that front.
Felt really stuck with drawing trees and then watched just the first 55 seconds of you laying down the roots (pun intended) of that first tree, and I already felt that I knew where to go cheers
Thank you soo much for sharing your talent and knowledge. I'm 61 and picking it back up after many, many years and if God so wills it, I shall be leaning heavily on your tutorials.
People who give thumbs down to any artistic offerings need to just not be artists anyway. Nothing's forcing you to watch. He's talented and giving you free instruction. Kudos to the artist.
Love the video and your drawings are beautiful! My suggestion for future video[s]: Do them in real time, maybe where you explain your technique with a little more detail, for beginners like myself who have very little technique. These time lapse videos are good for seeing your overall process, but it would help to see exactly what you're doing with your hand to achieve different effects. Thanks!
Thanks for the tutorial. Made a drawing of the first tree. Found it tricky shading the trunk but got the hang of it eventually. Also made so many branches that when I added leaves it ended up a formless mess, no breathing room. Managed to fix it by adding an additional darker shade of leaves. Using the darker leaves to create forms in all the densely packed leaves. Happy with the result.
This was my first try and . . . . . Have to say I was not expecting the result I got. Your suggestions are really useful, thanks to you I drew really nice trees on the very first attempt and I'm an absolute beginner in drawing. Thank you
I really like this video. I've been using tutorials and working from reference photos, and I am so excited to be able to draw without doing that! This is what I am working towards. Thank you Chris
I’m new to your channel and love it! As a newly retired Elementary Art teacher, now I’m hoping to do more Art for me, (rather than lesson plans and samples!) A student asked me early in my teaching how to draw a tree…I broke it down and called it a “Y tree” basically you add lots of Y’s and W’s etc then add details and shading! I had two fellow teachers, that had been my students, that both remembered and use the “Y tree” method to this day!!
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. I am learning properly at 38, and it almost feels like cheating to have such good tuition. All the love to you and yours
i love the calm music while drawing really fits in with the drawing about nature and trees. Great video as always and it really helps so thanks for showing us.
I liked your relaxed style of teaching. My results were better than before! My problems are with shadows on branches; I still need to work on that and will watch your video several more times. Thanks.
Brilliant video, I went out took some pictures of an oak tree, really looked at it and used the photos to organically let the picture grow. I haven’t drawn properly in over 20 years and I spent four hours drawing it and I wish I could show you the results, I’m so pleased. You communicate really clearly. Thank you blood. ✌🏾✊🏾🤜🏾🤛🏾
Can’t wait to try these trees. I’m new to drawing and I enjoy landscape, especially trees. I loved how how some of your tips were very vague but had an impact such as using pictures as references/inspiration not to be exact. And then when you went over the leaves. I spend SO much time on the leaves and it looks forced. Your voice is soothing too. Glad I found your videos.
Beautiful tecnic and results. I allways thought the most difficult is to create branches that come to ones view or go towards the fuge point. Thanks for the video I'll try to apply these advices.

Only took up drawing recently . Did the first tree ,took time but not too bad . But oh the second one . It took ages but got there in the end . I think the problem is we always think of trees with thick branches but these are like boney arthritic fingers . Took a lot of concentration and a heck of a lot of erasing . One thing I have trouble with is keeping it vertical so I draw a faint vertical line and draw the trunk either side of that, might help someone . The leaf idea was great and very effective . Thank you very much for the tutorial , learnt an awful lot .
Thx for the help but you do realize that your shading is on like God tier to us right and give almost no explanation on your technique and it's difficult for beginners
Fabulous. For starters you have such a unique voice perrrrrfect for instructing us all. I have decided to paint with a Van Dyke brown (Schminke) for the background and use gold leaf for the autumnal leaves. I needed to study tree trunks and their branches. Thank you so much Chris for this very natural, relaxed and professional tutorial. Best wishes in whatever way/direction life has taken you today. Patricia 😊😊😊🎉🎉🎉
Those are gorgeous! You made it look so easy. I never even thought about the bark of the tree or what kind of tree for that matter. Thank you for this lesson. Amazing!!

When the shading is right, pencil drawings have a magic that you don’t see in colored art.
I agree, for instance the illustrative sketches by Brian Froud... obviously they gain a new dimension with paper, but they also kinda lose something
Reuben Stecher Absolutely 😊
If the shading is good enough it'll easily upstage any pencil drawing. But if you suck at coloring like me pencil is your best bet.
They sort of give one a feeling of nostalgia.
Im 40 now i hope i can improve my drawing for coming addtional age :-)
