      Thankfully one time in early 1978 I had the good fortune to witness a whole concert in a very small club, and I was seated in the closest seat to his right. I could clearly see both hands and both feet. I was only about 10-12 feet away from him. I was so overtaken by what I witnessed that night, I could barely speak on the drive home! Occasionally I would mutter something like "I just can't believe it," or "How is that possible?"

    Holy shit. This is feakin insane.I saw Buddy a couple times in high school. Knew he was great, but didn’t realize how great. And, no matter what other drummer’s styles were, they respected Buddy for his abilities, fire, and musicianship. Beyond the drumnastic things and incredible technique, if you listen to him backing up Bird and other greats you’ll hear the musicality underneath it all. He was more than just an other worldly technician, as people like Philly, Max, etc knew. And, he elevated drums and drumming to a level where the general public noticed, for better or worse. They ( unfortunately) didn’t know who Max, Philly, Elvin, Roy, etc were, but at least they knew that there was something called “jazz drumming”.

  • @DennisJohnsonDrummer

    Buddy's phrasing was superb. Not to mention all of the notes that he played. His notes had meaning and forward momentum. I saw Buddy and his band in 1977. Went back stage and got his autograph. He just looked at me as if to say,"Hey kid. How'd you get back here? "He walked off his bus back stage and I was there with a friend waiting. Never forget it.

    • @cloudview747
      @cloudview747  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Wonderful you got to see him in 77! Buddy was so happy in 76 & 77, because he was so pleased with and proud of his Killer Force band.

  • @celticpridedrums

    He was amazing absolutely, and I love watching and listening to him; always will. But some of the comments on here make me think that admirers think he was the only person to ever master these rudiments (ie: "the best single stoke roll by anyone , ever" ) . We must realize that rudimental masters have been around for ages and although most stay in the orchestra, few venture behind the jazz kit. I learned my chops in Pipe Band and my heros were Alex Duthart and Jim Kilpatrick --and there's no doubt in my mind that if you saw a snare drum solo of their's most people here would be astounded. Kilpatrick in particular I believe would amaze Buddy . Just a thought. Also if you haven't seen Evelyn Glennie--check her out--she's deaf, yet an amazing drummer . I am not putting Buddy down--he's the best in so many ways, but there are others too that deserve recognition.

      Here's an example of what I mean. You could start with the end part by saying "It's com" or "It's net." Then you could say something like "It's g" or "It's hot" or "It's yahoo." Don't type the "at" symbol, ignore that entirely. You get the idea.

  • @Jez1963UK

    For me, I think this is where Buddy excelled. I was a student of the drums for just a few years when I was a child, in the 70's and we learned from the Buddy Rich book of Snare Drum Rudiments (my school excelled at music and for those few years we played all over the country, on tv and even abroad - some of those musicians became top professionals including my friend, Michael Bradley who plays drums in the band Sax Appeal. Me, I took a different path altogether). So, yes, of course I knew a LOT about him, especially as our drum teacher I'm convinced tried to behave like he did, for they both were my idols back then (of course not now) - I used to call Buddy Rich "The Zeroth Drummer". Basically, I held the belief that he wasn't the best drummer in the world, he wasn't the number one or the 1st best, he was so far ahead of the rest of the best that he was like the Zero'th ! Way ahead of the rest of the best. My friends used to laugh at me :) (saw him once in concert in London at Lewisham ! I was right at the back and remember him complaining about the spotlight directly on him !).

    • @cloudview747
      @cloudview747  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for you comment! I was unfamiliar with the term zeroth. So I looked it up online: "The word zeroth is used to suggest a level of importance even higher than first." I love it! And agree completely. Buddy Rich was and is the zeroth!

    One of THE Masters at work. On this great Earth there have been just a few. Some have literally beaten themselves to death. That said, I tip my hat to others as Tony Williams, Louie Bellson, Billy Cobham, Earl Palmer, Hal Blaine and Benny Benjamin to name a few. Rich was a crazy demanding band leader, legendary for cursing out his bands. I mean, he went OFF. Not much is known about Benjamin who, just listening to those old MoTown records, must have been a most beautiful soul, a commanding drummer who kept everyone informed on where they were in any given chart through his breaks which were golden.

      +drumday Cool!👌🏻 I'm still on my drum learning journey after 30 years; Buddy is still, and to be honest always will be, an inspiration to me (even though my niche is hard rock/metal). I respect the guys who don't see or feel what I do when I watch Buddy play; nothing you can do or say will change how a musician makes someone feel. We're all drummers (I assume), it's all cool! 🙂 I'd seriously love to see this cat Alex play if he doesn't rate Buddy; he must be very talented, I'm not being malicious, I'd like to check the guy out. There's room for everyone in this game.🙂✌🏻️

    Any drummer who desires to play like Buddy should first see this then go and check out drum corps, the key to unlocking the BR style can be found in good old military drumming, get the basic corps patterns down and then take them round your drums and you will at least have a foundation to work on.

    Outstanding performance, Buddy Rich remains the high bar for drummers to achieve. I look at Buddy Rich as the Bruce Lee of drummers, his skill level is extraordinary, which sets him apart from other drummers. During his era Ed Shaughnessy was his peer, and cames close to his skill level, but Rich was still a head above him. In the early 1950's, I believe Mercury Records released an album of Max Roach and Buddy Rich's respective quartets where they had a drum battle. Max was his equal, the only drummer to earn that right.
    Today's jazz/fusion classic drummers again comes close to Buddy Rich, however he still remains a head above them. Consider the field of drummers living and dead: Alfonse Mouzon, Billy Cobham, Lenny White, Mike Clark, Tony Williams, Phil Collins, and the like are all fine drummers but Buddy Rich is still a head above them.

      @cloudview747  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like some of the drummers you mention very much indeed. But Buddy has always been, and always will be, my favorite without question
      P.S. The album you referred to was entitled Rich versus Roach, which came out in 1959.

    • @karlkilcrease51
      @karlkilcrease51 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cloudview747 thank you I thought it was Rich vs. Roach, I do remember they were facing each other on the album cover.
      There is a drummer who skipped my mind, Dennis Chambers. His right foot is funkier than Alfonse Mouzon's, which at one time I thought was impossible. He began playing with Parliament-Funkadelic in his late teens; he's a beast.

I know he was actually a good 🥁, and I have seen him perform live ( backing up Clapton in April '87), he can play, however,he doesn't come close to being on the same level as a Buddy ( no one does)or any of the other guys named

      I don’t know much about DCI technique from back then, but while Buddy’s style is absolutely incredible, i don’t think this particular style of playing will fit for DCI. Of course, if Buddy were to try to match standard drum line technique, he would skyrocket to become one of the best of all time at it
