Restored classic Honda MTX walkaround and startup

  • After a 6-month long hibernation, i took my Honda MTX50S out for a spin. At some point i decided to make a "walkaround and startup" video of my pride and joy, since the previous one wasn't very detailed.
    The production year is 1982, and after extensive use, i decided it was about time to restore the bike to its former glory.
    Restoration began in March 2015 and the bike was completed in June 2017, but unfortunately, due to health problems, i could only ride 500 kilometers on it.

    Enjoy!
    Please contact me if you want to use this video or parts of it!

    What a beautiful ol classic! There was a time in my life when I didn't own a car I considered them wheelchairs, I owned several motorcycles most of them Hondas! ♡ This bike!

      My older brother bought it new, but had no use for it after he got his licence and wet to live on his own. I took it over from him and gave him a big cabinet ;-)
      It took me everywhere and made trips to Zandvoort Racetrack with it, about an 8 hour ride, watched some racing there and went back the next day. Never got tired of it, even when i got my motorbike licence.
      It's a bike to relax on, the motorbike is purely for transportation.
      There's still some work to do. I finally found some stickers for the fueltank, so that one can be restored, and i've got some new original nuts and bolts to replace the rusty ones.
      Thanks for watching my friend!

      @@2stroke4me That's so cool! Such a neat Lil bike it's hard to believe it's only 50cc's Nice! Sad to say my only bike I have now is a Lil pit bike with a big heart! Lol... It's a clone I labeled to make look like a Honda CRF oh but my mountain bike does have a 55cc 2strk on it if that counts! Lol... Thanks for sharing! Did you guys over there get the Honda MBX the road going 50cc black and gold if my memory is correct? Think I told you before I had the MTX125 as a 17 year old OMG wish I still had it now at 50!!!

    • @2stroke4me
      @2stroke4me  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wish. Those weren't homologated in the Netherlands. Too much stupid regulations (for instance, the MTX had 18" front and rear wheels because different size wheels weren't allowed on mopeds) and Honda had to design very odd parts for homologation in the Netherlands. I guess they just didn't bother selling certain bikes here. We had the NSR50 though, which was a fantastic looking bike.
      Also, everything above 50cc and 40 km/h was considered a motorbike, and those small capacity bikes aren't popular at all here. A real shame since they were, and are, very practical in crowded areas.
      I worked in a bike shop back then, and i would have loved to sell and maintain those light motorbikes, since those customers were mch more responsible with maintenance. I've seen a lot of good 50cc's go to waste because of cheap maintenance and bad tuning.

    Thats an awsome bike, keep it safe man, lock it up, and when out never take your eyes off it, my son had an 2001 aprilia rx50, lovely bike, it was stolen last week by 3 dirty thieving scroats, it was gone for 2 days, found it burnt out, its a total right off, so thats another rare bike lost forever, i have a video of it on my channel, i am so pissed..

    Toen ik 16 werd, in 1985, heb ik een nieuwe gekregen van mijn ouders. Exact dezelfde, ook rood. Koste toen 3150 gulden en liep standaard 40 kmh. Daar hebben we natuurlijk wat aan gedaan en toen liep hij 90 kmh met een 70cc cylinder en een andere uitlaat. Verkocht toen ik 18 werd. Helaas, had ik 'm nog maar. Mooie tijd was 't.

    • @2stroke4me

      Ze waren zo duur dat ze toen al een zeldzaamheid waren. Maar qua kwaliteit en techniek was er niks wat er in de buurt kwam, op bromfiets gebied dan.
      Ik nam deze over van m'n oudere broer toen ik 16 was. Na 30 jaar vond ik dat 'ie wel aan z'n pensioen toe was.
      Brommer tijdperk in de jaren 80 was inderdaad een mooie tijd!

    I owned an 85 model identical to this! Remember boring the cylinder out to 60cc to give me more speed and retro fitting MTX 80 dash. Thanks for the memories. Classic Honda 👍

    • @2stroke4me
      @2stroke4me  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool! Boring the cylinder was indeed a very nice performance trick!
      I'd love to put an 80cc engine in mine and register it as a motorcycle.

    • @Dsheppleston
      @Dsheppleston 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ive heard that the 100cc engine from a Honda H100 will fit straight in the MTX frame snd gives double the power. Engine looks almost identical to the small 50cc engine.

    • @2stroke4me
      @2stroke4me  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Dsheppleston Those are impossible to find here (Netherlands). Even the 80cc engines are close to impossible to find since the 80cc version wasn't sold here.

      @@2stroke4me yeah I understand what you mean. I’m currently trying to restore a 1981 Honda Accord car. Parts are rarer than chickens teeth!! Used to love the MTX80 and 125 also. Honda also made an MTX200 I believe. The MBX range used the same engines from memory. 🤔

    • @2stroke4me
      @2stroke4me  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Dsheppleston Indeed, the MBX used the same engine as the MTX 125 and 200. The entire MBX range and MTX-SH-R (AD06) range above 50cc were also not available here. Shame since it's close to impossible to legally convert and register a 50cc into a motorbike.
      The roads here are just made for them and the road rules for motorcycles are much less complicated as those for mopeds.
      The 1981 Accord is an interesting car, and a goodlooking one too! Don't know much about cars (understatement, lol) but the 80's produced some great looking iconic cars!

    This red color looks awesome! I have a black one from 86. Do you have any tips on getting the rear suspension firmer/higher? Mine feels like a chopper

    • @2stroke4me
      @2stroke4me  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the original color (R110).
      The rear shock is soft, and it's worse if the link system bearings are worn out. The ride height can be adjusted by relocating the c-spring (it holds the spring seat in place) You'll need a hydraulic press to disassemble the shock unit.
      Many years ago shorter connecting rods (for the link system) were sold (made by Fast Arrow i think), maybe they're still out there.
      One other thing is to make a longer joint (the U-shaped part of the shock).

    • @reneberndt7476
      @reneberndt7476 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the answer! I've found a longer joint piece. Now I just have to find a shop which is able/willing to work on my old girl. For 100€ there're also firmer springs for the fork available from Wirth. But I'm not sure if this would be worth it

    • @2stroke4me
      @2stroke4me  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice, i hope you find someone who appreciates these kind of classic bikes!
      Thanks for the tip, i'll look into it, although my front forks are fine. The only thing i dislike about the suspension is the rebound of the rear shock, which is too soft. But since i'm not going offroad with it, i don't feel the need (yet) to change it.

    I’m in the process of fixing up my Mtx 50, currently got a 65cc bore kit and derestricted standard exhaust, it did 50mph which was impressive, one thing I need to sort is my rear shock which is so worn now if you go over a bump it’ll move the swing arm so much the rear brake comes on, any idea how to sort it? Or the size maybe I could replace it with a newer rear shock? Thanks :)

    Ik heb ook een mtx ot maar heb echt heel weinig licht.

    • @2stroke4me
      @2stroke4me  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dank je!
      De banden zijn Michelin Sirac 110/80 -18 achter en 80/90 -21 voor. Ik heb er geen halogeen lamp in (rij er nooit mee 's avonds). De lichtopbrengst was toendertijd voldoende maar is inderdaad zwak vergeleken met moderne koplampen, maar een flinke poetsbeurt van de reflector en glas aan de binnenkant verbeterde de lichtopbrengst (al is dat nog steeds niet te vergelijken met moderne koplampen).

    • @Bartem_
      @Bartem_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oke, bedankt voor je reactie!
      Ik heb nu al een halogeen lamp besteld, maar ik vraag me af of de reflector enz. Daar tegen kunnen omdat een halogeen misschien wat warmer wordt dan een gewone lamp. Maar dan weet jij dat natuurlijk ook niet.
      Mooie banden zijn het ook, passen ze denk je ook op de originele chrome velgen?

    • @2stroke4me
      @2stroke4me  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Geen idee of de koplamp een halogeen kan hebben, maar ik denk het wel. Gewoon even in de gaten houden.
      die banden passen op de chrome velgen, maar kijk even of je aan de voorkant een 21" velg hebt. De MTX werd origineel geleverd met een 18" velg aan de voorkant.

    I have one of these same like yours sadly its a bit old and not in good condition the engine is still good though but the spline is damaged all the teeth are now broken i use to use it as a ride to school it was a gift from my grandfather who's still alive but sadly is blind now i hope to restore it one day when i have enough money or have an opportunity to live in a foreign country.. Thanks for sharing! My bike has a similar story, i used to ride to school with it also, and after that i used it to ride to work.
      At the time it already was a rare bike, so over the years i collected parts for it, knowing parts would eventually become very hard to get. I'm glad i did; during the classic rides i haven't seen a single original MTX 50, apart from one imported motorbike version that was insured as moped (motorbike versions were never sold here). Spectators of classic meetings never recognise the model and think it's a modern bike. Which is cool since i then have to explain that it's older than most bikes at those classic meetings, lol!
      I hope you can restore your bike one day. It's a part of you and your grandfather!

      @@arjinggaming7421 Parts are very hard to find,, and expensive, especially new parts. But it doesn't have to be in perfect cosmetic condition, you can always start with the mechanical things. Analyse the condition of your bike, write doen what essential parts have to be replaced and search online for prices. Some things, like for instance the rear shock link system bearings, aren't available anymore. So when they're worn out, you have to contact some company that is specialised in replacing oilite bearings.
      Thanks for posting your story. If you have any questions, don't hessitate to ask them. I know some tips and tricks from the time i worked on these bikes in a bike shop.
