Son borrows dad's car, gets stuck in the snow for 2 days!

  • Being new to the area and wanting to go explore the snow, Harrison went a little too far out and ended up getting stuck in the snow. Luckily a couple of snowmobilers came along and were able to give him a ride back to civilization. Then after an attempt to go back and get it on their own, his dad called me to see if we could go up and get it out for them. Grumpy and I took the track Jeep up and after a little winching and a little pulling, we got them turned around and back to the top of the hill where they were able to drive out on their own.

      @@TomaszbtdZiobrowski Well, up until he got stuck he was doing pretty good. 🙂
      Everyone tends to think their vehicle can go anywhere, until it can't.
      Most of the problem is the type of snow there, with the thick top crust and sugar snow underneath. Once you are through the crust the tires don't hit the road and you are like a beached whale.

    I am feel your pain Casey. I am beginning to think that the way to go any more is to buy an older vehicle that does not have all of the fancy electronic GARBAGE on it, then 100% overhaul everything. No traction control, no electronically controlled fuel injection, no anti-lock brakes, just a simple TROUBLE FREE vehicle. One that uses a key to start. If you like navigation, which I do, have an after market system installed, like I did with my Dodge. I do not NEED a remote start. I do not NEED to have my 4 wheel drive turned on by twisting a knob. The old full gear transfer cases are robust and trouble free. On my old 1965 Jeep pickup I had front hubs that I could turn in. I lived in Northern Nevada, and when the first snow came, I would turn in the hubs, and they would stay in until spring. I had people ask me, "aren't you afraid of wearing out your front differential?" I would reply, "faster than what, the rear one?"
    I 100% believe in the KISS principal. Keep It Simple Stupid. On my hot rod, I tried electronic fuel injection, and I hated it. (396 Chevy engine) I sent it back and reinstalled my quadrajet and never looked back. I have 12,500 miles on it, and it works flawlessly. As does everything else on it. It is old school from one end to the other.
    I may not have heated/cooled seats, or a heated steering wheel, or anti-lock brakes, but then I know how to drive and stop. The more fancy crap that is installed on your vehicle, the more that can quit working in the middle of nowhere leaving you afoot. I drove my old Jeep for 100,000 miles AFTER I overhauled EVERYTHING. I mean, I bought it out of a wrecking yard for $400. Somebody else had taken that horrible Jeep overhead cam engine out and installed a Chevy 283, and it had a T98 4 speed transmission instead of that light duty T90. I had never before seen a more thoroughly worn out vehicle in my life! Even both sending units in both fuel tanks were broken. I worked on that Jeep for a year. I wish that I still had that Jeep. It was trouble free and never ever left me afoot, miles from anything.
    These new vehicles are soooooo dependent on all of these electronics, that I do not know if you could bypass the pushbutton start. If you could find the main power relay, and replace it with a hard wired continues duty relay, you might be able to convert it to a keyed start. If I had as much trouble with the electronics on my vehicle, as you are having, that is what I would do. It still has a starter motor. How you engage the starter motor is where the problems lie. It sounds like you should find a factory wiring diagram. At least it might show you how to work around the ignition system. Maybe you could wire in an emergency key switch under the hood to at least get you back home. At least that is what I would do.

      I've got 580,000 miles out of a 1998 Chevy van. I've gotten 450,000 plus miles out of 4 other Chevy vans that's 1999 to 2002 without a single big issue other than a couple of water pumps and a few single fuel pump replacements.

    • @MickeyMishra
      @MickeyMishra 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the computer still controls the ignition and what it does is that even if you get the starter to turn over it won't keep the engine running. That's the glory of the anti-theft system in these vehicles.
      if you have the Chrysler Factory tool you can actually tell the computer to shut up about everything and make its main mission to Simply keep the engine running and starting and doing only the things that you tell it to do but the thing is that's a lot of work and it's a lot of programming that you have to do and some of it unfortunately May revert back after just a battery change.

    • @Rat-Builder
      @Rat-Builder 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MickeyMishra What you say is true Mickey, but, I venture to say that it could be bypassed. It would take some very thorough reading of the schematics, but I do believe it could be done. There were computer controlled diesel injection systems before all of the anti-theft circuitry. it would definitely take some creative bypasses. Casey did find that the key-fob was the culprit.
      I just have a real issue with computer controlled EVERYTHING! When I worked for Caterpillar, I used some creative "fooling" of the inputs to the computer to trick the computer into doing what I wanted it to do. Like, instead of using a fuel pressure sensor, I would plug in an atmospheric pressure sensor to the fuel sensor wiring to troubleshoot the fuel pressure sensor. All that the computer is measuring is parameters. If I could supply the correct parameters to the computer, it would not know that it was being fooled. And, I did not tell it that it was being lead astray. LOL
      I was down in Hurricane Utah a few months ago, and there was a road that was extremely rough that I needed to go about 1/4 mile on before I could unload my quad to go for a ride. SO, I put the 09 Dodge pickup into low range. It worked awesome to just let it idle slowly over the rough spots. HOWEVER, after I was done and back to the better road and I tried to take it OUT of low range. I had a devil of a time moving the truck around so that there was no bind of any kind in the transfer case so that it would allow the t-cast to go out of low range and into high range. Had the linkage been pure mechanical, it wouldn't have been an issue.
      The factory is trying to make the modern vehicles in a way that the idiots can use them, and in the end NOBODY can use them!

    • @maxironpaw
      @maxironpaw 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am with you, brother. EFI is more efficient and has better drivability. But for some use cases, older is better. For my vehicles that need to be dependable no matter what, it is carburetor and points. Why? Because they are dependable in spite of what many people think. And you can open up a carb or change points in the middle of a stream if need be. My old hot rod had a '53 Buick nailhead, points ignition, and 3 Stromberg 97s. Always ran like a top and never let me down.

    I feel your pain over car repairs. Back when I was younger, i am 73 now, I bought from a" supposed honest dealer" a NEW mustang. Nothing fancy but just a daily driver. Electrical problem's started arising about a month after. I tried everywhere to get it fixed as job moved me out of area. Finally one mechanic asked why I bought a car that had been in an accident! Got rid of it in less than a week. A valuable lesson learned and never forgotten.

    And just to clarify, I only sent him the invoice for $3,754, as that's what it took to repair the things he agreed to pay for at the time of delivery. The rest were things I found later on, and as we don't have an agreement for him to pay for those additional items, I take them as my responsibility and don't expect anything from them for those repairs.

    I have had multiple Dodge types.. even my new Challenger says one in a while says key faub not detected.. Dodge says you put the key to the push button and push start it.. sometimes when the faub is cold. They don't like to work either.. good luck in getting it straightened out..

    I bought a 1962 Chevrolet K20 .Had not ran for 19 years. I offered 3,500 and he said yes. I put another 2,000 to get it back on the road and registered. The truck and the complete video series is on my channel. Have fun out there.

    So it's not a snatch block, it's a snatch ring. Noice bit of kit, that. That's as far as I'm going with that one....
    Grumpy Cam does a good job on the narration and the comments. Hire him. He's got a good voice and speaks The Good English.

    Casey..try using the key in the fob..the driver door handle should have a spot to insert the key... On some vehicles it resets the fob to the car...

    • @mslorry3420
      @mslorry3420 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That was the answer for us. After getting new ignition then new key fobs that wouldn't except code. Local locksmith told us to reset system by doing a cold computer restart "pull both terminals off the battery" wait for all clicking to stop" then hook up battery again and use door key to get back in and everything went fine.

      Some vehicles need a code- series of left and right turns of the lock to do that. Brilliant! Except how many people have it written down in the vehicle?

    Casey I don’t know if your truck has the same feature as my car but in the bottom of the console of my car.There is a square shaped box in the corner that you can slip the key fob into so it can sync. This typically happens to me due to a weak battery in the key fob. Hope that helps you as well.

  • @dweiss1
    @dweiss1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My Chevy Volt has a place to insert your key when the fob is not recognized. Not sure if Rams have that.
    But a great video nonetheless. Hope you get the money owed to you.

    A thing to try for your key fob issue, 1, keep a spare battery, the vehicle sometimes has issues detecting the key if the battery runs down. 2, Lock then unlock the vehicle with the fob, the vehicle will usually re-detect the key. Might help you out if it happens again and you don't have it repaired yet.

    • @JGMan0011
      @JGMan0011 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good tips. Also, (& probably an over simplification) but when you first showed the truck not starting I said to myself the fob doesn't like that the door is open. Every time you tried after that (on camera) the door was still open. Then when you showed it had somehow started the door was closed. Maybe that had something to do with it since it was wired up incorrectly??

    • @CaseyLaDelle
      @CaseyLaDelle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JGMan0011 that had nothing to do with it. The solder on the circuit board broke and the microchip fell off

    No saying Matt's name doesn't help you one bit, its being you that helps and never tie yourself to a stranger that can hurt you without even knowing so unless you want Matt's troubles to affect you I would just use the company's name of yankem ropes and sponsors not people who you don't know like family. Your good heart and attitude is what people come here for. Also to see what or where someone is stuck now.... keep up the good work and never dout yourself or ride on someone else's coat tails...!
