TBF this is a thing English speakers will tease other native English speakers in front of non-native speakers showing good skill in both formal and street grammar/vocabulary.
I love that Marutake is a reoccurring character here in this anime. Firstly discovering that Bae is in fact not Japanese. Then discovering that shes Australian living in Japan lol. Next up, he'll discover that shes a comedian.
"Are you Japanese?" and "For how many years have you been living in Japan?" were words he didn't say if he thought she was Japanese. He mistakenly assumed she was a native Japanese speaker, so he said, "You speak English well."
There are many foreigners who speak Japanese fluently, but it is extremely rare to find someone with perfect pronunciation Bae and Anya are indistinguishable from native speakers in every way, not just in pronunciation but also in rhythm, choice of words, and attitude
Yeah for example Cali, Kson, Ina, Iofi, and Ollie are fluent in Japanese but their accent makes it easy to distinguish they actually didn't grow up there... But I would say Irys and Fuwamoco also nailed the accent just like Anya and Bae, because many JP members are also surprised they are not from Japan when hearing their speaking..
@@irvancrocs1753 but Irys is half japanese, furthermore, she and FWMC had been living in Japan for certain amount of times. Idk bout Anya, cuz literally noone knows about her past life or any of her personal info, but Bae as someone of Chinese-Australian who never live in Japan prior joining Hololive is mad.

Something that's always fascinated me is how hard it is to distinguish accents in a different language. Same as I can't tell how Korone sounds different but I've seen enough clips to know she does. Meanwhile, an Australian accent stands out so strongly to me, I'd think anyone could hear it.
Same, whenever they talk about the Kansai dialect in anime I can't distinguish it, but I can distinguish between almost every dialect and accent of English.
I can tell a Mexican from a Spaniard but that's about it. Different Japanese accents are hard to pick, but then I am way beginner level. Kansai just sticks out because they say "aho" over "baka" and "honma" over "honto".
I think from intermediate proficiency it becomes quite possible to tell accents and dialects apart (at least speaking from experience with English as a second langue). Imitating accents though... There is no chance I can do that. I am stuck with my own.
Every now and then though, you’ll find someone like my brother, who although is a native English speaker, will have no idea someone has a different accent until you tell him so lol
I never knew this untill now, but Danish and Japanese share a fact. There are so few of us who can speak the language, that we are really fucking hyped when we meet a none native who can speak our language fluently XD
lol, never forget bae's japanese is better than miko's elite japanese hahaha. i'll never forget bae giving miko a japanese lesson on kansai dialect lololol JDON!
The way everyone is always pointing a gun at everyone else while having casual conversations reminds me of America. Also, Japanese is Bae's THIRD language.
I find that this phenomenon is reasonably common. I'm born Chinese and live in Australia, I also received most of my education in Australia, though I first studied English back when I was in China. I've been told many times that I speak really good English with no accent by Australians I met in school and workplaces. I've also met Australians who studies Chinese and are capable of having conversations with me entirely in Chinese with really good pronouciation. I can't comment about their grammar because I don't actually know about Chinese grammar rules in the same way I know English or Japanese grammar rule, which I learned when studying those languages. What I observe is that people who learned a second language very well can sometimes be considered "better" at speaking that language than some native speakers. I guess that's the benefit of systematically studying a language. This is also why I don't believe in the myth about how babies can learn languages better than adults. Adults are so much better at learning new things, as long as it's done the proper way.
babies are "better at learning" new languages mainly because theyre not embarrassed to just make random mouth noises, theyre picking things up freeform without anything holding them back, while someone learning a second language isnt
People who blame age for not being able to learn a language just have a loser mindset. My mum picked up Mandarin as her 4th language at the age of 50 and she's doing great.
@nf7694 Well, what about older foreigners? Even though they've learned how to speak & read a language, there's many that still have an accent or thick accent or have difficulty with many pronunciations properly. Are those people not putting in enough effort then?
@Ambichook That didn't seem to work with my niece. While she can understand some basics of my family's native tongue. She can't speak it. Whether she's too embarrassed to try or etc. She was exposed at a young age too, like 4 to 8 years old. My other niece though, is interested & has tried. Just not on a serious level.

There is a weird cultural thing among some Japanese people that has still managed to stick around. Many of them view being able to speak Japanese as something that only Japanese people are capable of, so there is always a shock when they find out someone that isn’t Japanese can speak it so natively. I’ve experienced and know of people that are just like Bae and often people assume they are Japanese on the phone or online, but in person some Japanese will look at them like they are speaking gibberish when they try to talk to them in Japanese because they don’t look Japanese. Like, their brain can’t comprehend a non Japanese person speaking nearly perfect Japanese, so it just shuts down and pretends it can’t hear anything, lol.
As long as you can hold a conversation with them and be respectful, they'll think you're good no matter how bad your Japanese is. I can only speak like a first-grade student and the staff I talk to at a shop compliment me anyway, kind of a weird feeling lol.
