I've had this idea of making a table out of plywood rattling around in my head.......but I've never made one, basically have no woodworking skills....or tools.....so of course I jumped down the youtube rabbit hole at 2 am looking for someone to explain to me how I might still accomplish my project. Girl, talk about a SUUUUPER EASY fast finishing process. Not gonna lie, it's more expensive for larger projects. But for a flawless finish, that is so incredibly easy and quick to apply it's worth it in most cases. Check it out 😁

The desk came out great. I think us makers/builders have all done the pocket holes on the wrong side at least once! There is something so attractive about a clean minimalist design and I love the contrasting look the large expanses of the stark white birch wood set off by the contrasting dark lines of the edges. I can’t wait to see more from you!

Oh I hadn't even thought of using an extending table for clearance. I just got a free second-hand extendable IKEA table and I'm converting it to a workbench. I can use this too for circular saw cutting. Great idea!

Really nice adaptation of the design. The split legs add a unique touch and solidify the structure. I also appreciate how you sparingly glued to salvage more of the off cuts. The Four Eyes reference was awesome!

Melody - a couple of decorative ideas for future projects: Instead of an accent wall, how about an accent leg, painted in a bright colour? You could even get some clear acrylic sheeting and make an "invisible" leg. You could also possibly fill the voids in those legs with coloured epoxy resin once you're more confident. 👍💜
You can get a dowel and fill the pocket holes then flush cut and sand the excess you can also get pre made plugs. For the legs you could put some dowels to mechanically join the to the skirt or even some screws from the inside if needed or if you are unsure. But in theory the glue should hold if you not to rough with the table etc

Very Nice! May I suggest cutting a long strip of plywood to account for the width of the circular saw base plate? This way you can set it directly on the cut, and the straight edge guide on the other side of it.
Thank you! Thank you for the suggestions, I kind of have that, except mine is a small block, I use it to line up my guide to the edge of what I'm cutting. Effectively a (much) smaller section of what you said. That's a good idea though, so I can line up my guide much quicker!
Hi Melody, Nice project! Especially since you work with a limited set of tools and a limited space. Watching the video I have some suggestions that may help you. * [temporary / permanently] Attach a long strip of wood against the fence of the cross-cut-saw; Measure ONCE and clamp a bit of wood in place as a stop-block against this fence. Slide the pieces against the stop-block Now you can cut multiple pieces and be sure they are all exactly the same size. * The workbench / garden-table rocks & wobbles a lot; Clamp [temporary] or screw a few boards in place to give you more stability * Cool shades are I agree an NECESSITY! ;D * Mistakes are 'part & parcel' No need to hide; They are illustrations of your learning curve; Wear them with pride! Nice result!

Well done! Nice touch with the chamfer there. I like your use of minimal tools. Reminds me of when I was first getting started. As far as saws go, you can do a lot with just a circular saw and a jig saw. Good job!

Very nice build, the little "mistake" gives it personality and i really love that you used a finish that didn't hide the woodgrain, i'm in love with wood grain ;) Keep up the good work, i really like the result especially since you dind't use a lot of tools. As a note, you can "hide" the pocket holes with some dowels inserted and then cut flush to the surface, it won't be perfect but it will be less visible (in case you need to move the table to a place where the back is also visible). EDIT : i just saw that on the "floating shelf" video you alreay used the plastic covers for the pocket holes and even mentioned that you could have used dowels too ;)

this is awesome, it turned out really great, if i could add a couple suggestion, dont glue the top of your frame, or screw it in.. i understand its just plywood but it still needs to be able to move for expansion and contraction. instead try using Z clips on your frame of figure 8 table top fasteners, i personally prefer the figure 8 because all you need is a drill and a forstner bit for it. also be careful using the miter saw stop block clamp to hold your waste piece, bad things can happen including the blade getting pinched.
Baltic birch plywood is super stable, if it moves which I really doubt, it will move at the same rate of the aprons, I use it all the time as substrate for plastic laminate and never had a problem with movement. Z clips or figure 8 are a must if you are working with solid wood, not plywood.
I just found you on TH-cam love that desk I'm going to build one if I was not that expensive and I already have the tools to do it but it's a great idea beautiful I'm so glad I found you

Nice table. I like how you doubled the legs. Just a tip, when you did the rip cuts at the begining for the legs and frame, you can use your saw fence as a guide instead of the straight edge. Once the fence is locked, you can make 4 identical strips without measuring.

Using the plies as a decorative design feature, instead of covering them up with face tape, was a really nice touch also.

Good point about the wooden dowel! I do screw into the skirt as well as glue probably overkill on hindsight doing both haha

Nice build!!! If you want to cover the end grain of the plywood, they make iron on edge banding.

this is awesome, it turned out really great, if i could add a couple suggestion, dont glue the top of your frame, or screw it in.. i understand its just plywood but it still needs to be able to move for expansion and contraction. instead try using Z clips on your frame of figure 8 table top fasteners, i personally prefer the figure 8 because all you need is a drill and a forstner bit for it. also be careful using the miter saw stop block clamp to hold your waste piece, bad things can happen including the blade getting pinched.

Baltic birch plywood is super stable, if it moves which I really doubt, it will move at the same rate of the aprons, I use it all the time as substrate for plastic laminate and never had a problem with movement. Z clips or figure 8 are a must if you are working with solid wood, not plywood.

Nice table. I like how you doubled the legs. Just a tip, when you did the rip cuts at the begining for the legs and frame, you can use your saw fence as a guide instead of the straight edge. Once the fence is locked, you can make 4 identical strips without measuring.

Great desk! Will try it out myself :). I just started woodworking as a hobby (I'm assembling my shed ad the moment). My "day job" is game dev, so I spend most of my time in front of various screens, so being able to do something manually is quite refreshing.
