    Blood Meridian is one of my favorites. Also one of the most violent books I've ever read. It has a lot of philosophical, literary and biblical references that are easily missed it you haven't read some books yet, like Faust, The Divine Comedy, Paradise Lost and of course the Bible.

    In school they assigned us to read The Stranger and I loved it. I reread it last year and also read The Plague by Camus and I gotta say The Plague in my opinion was so much better and deals with similar themes. Both great but I was pleasantly surprised with The Plague and wonder why more people don’t talk about it.

    • @PaperbackJourneys
      @PaperbackJourneys  16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Oh that's so interesting. Yeah I'm always hearing about The Stranger but never heard about The Plague. Maybe the former gets talked about and studied more because it's heavier thematically? I'll add The Plague to my TBR list. Thanks.

    Well this is the first time I’ve read everything from the TBR. Yay. I’m an authority 😂
    This Is How You Lose The Time War is marmite for a lot of people. Some get really frustrated that the broader world and the abilities of Red and Blue are a bit nebulous, but for me it was the book of the year so far.
    I’ll be posting my review of The Fisherman in the next couple of days, personally I reckon you’ll enjoy it. It’s pretty much what would’ve happened if Stephen King wrote Lovecraft, so it might be a nice gateway for you.
    Enjoy Dublin mate. Sláinte

    Jurassic Park film is also a dear memory for me, but while the movie is an adventure for the family, the book is more like a horror/thriller story. This "technological thriller" style of Michael Crichton e amazing, I couldn't stop reading. I've read many other Crichton books ever since and love them all.

    I recently read Kindred and really enjoyed it. While it definitely described some of the horrors and terrible injustice of slavery, I didn't find it to be an overly heavy read (as I understand Blood Meridian to be, for example). Octavia E. Butler's The Parable of the Sower was also very good and thought-provoking, and for me a much tougher emotional read. I'm white; maybe the experience would be different for people of color.

    • @PaperbackJourneys
      @PaperbackJourneys  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      So would you say that Parable of the Sower is a better book?

    • @Jodi9810
      @Jodi9810 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@PaperbackJourneys I don't have a good answer for that. I thought they were both good reads in different ways. For me, Kindred was probably more enjoyable as a story and Parable hit me harder, made me think more, maybe. Maybe b/c the hard events of Kindred took place in the past and are largely known, whereas the ones of Parable are depictions of what could become real in our near future. (Interesting that the "future" setting of the book when she wrote it is our "right now.")
