Julia Margaret Cameron - Portrait Photographer

Julia Margaret Cameron was a British photographer born in 1815 in Calcutta, India. She started taking pictures relatively late in life. In 1863, at 48 years old. Her photographs typically have a soft focus whilst her mind and eye have an acute sharpness. Cameron is best known today for her moving and sensitive portraits of eminent Victorians. She made allegorical and illustrative studio photographs, posing and costuming family members and servants in imitation of the popular Romantic and Pre-Raphaelite paintings of the day. Her soft-focus style, ridiculed by many critics and photographers of the period who were devoted to sharp precision in photography, because she did not seek technical perfection in her work as a means to "capture" or document reality. Later critics appreciated her valuing of spiritual depth over technical perfection and now consider her one of Victorian Britain’s most famous photographers.
