Ruth is not a Juilliard graduate, she actually quit Juilliard to play with Frank when she saw him at the Garrick theater during the Absolutely Free days
My favourite Zappa band, so funky, so 70s. Ruth Underwood, Chester Thompson, George Duke, Tom Fowler, a gorilla and Napoleon Murphy Brock. I never get sick of Roxy and Elsewhere or this video set. Classic.
Jone, F.Y.I. Zappa has a 3 record set called "Shut up and Play yur Guitar". Almost 2 hours of just Guitar solos from either studio sessions or taken from the middle of live songs from a series of tours in Europe and America. Maybe 20 tunes, and you will be amazed how many different sounds he can get from the strings.
Thank you for getting into Zappa. He is one of the great composers of all time. The complexity of his music along with the quality and attention to detail make him a great producer as well. Keep up the good work! 👍
The video cut off at the transition into the next event - if you need to know what happens next, it's this: th-cam.com/video/5dk_GFrxiVY/w-d-xo.html The studio version of the song is worth hearing - it has backing vocals by Tina Turner & The Ikettes (also Kin Vassy in the outro) and a dirtier guitar solo. All that said, I'm another one who's going to recommend the 1973 Stockholm show because it's closer to "pure unadulterated Zappa" - and has Jean Luc Ponty in it.
Love Zappa. Insane music. The keyboard player and singer is George Duke who in the late '90s played with Phil Collins and his Big Jazz Band. Yes, THAT Phil Collins from Genesis. Also note that the drummer here is Chester Thompson who played drums for decades with Genesis on tour (after Zappa and Weather Report). He also played with Phil on his solo work. Small world.
Zappa would surround himself with the best musicians he could find (His auditions were legendary) then work their asses off to be able to play his music. No matter the personnel, when he hit the road, he had the most well rehearsed band out there, and they could literally play anything. Some of their live "covers" of songs like "Stairway to Heaven," or Whipping Post," were as good as, if not better than the originals, even when done with tongue firmly in cheek.
Frank's last touring band (The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life) went on the road with a songbook of over 200 songs. Frank always had the best band around.
I was lucky enough to see Zappa live, check out his rendition of Ravels Bolero. If you love jazz Blessed Relief from the album The Grand Wazoo is beautiful.
There are several musicians who are so important to zappas music, to me the two biggest are ruth and also ike willis also george duke (im not discounting the fowlers, or any drummers i jus think of the identifiable zappa people) this is the best kind of reaction man, i like your format a lot, its authentic.
On nice thing about Zappa... he often used live recording, parts or complete, with or without overdubs, on the studio albums. Especially the solos used to be taken from live performances... if nothing else.
There are unfortunately not to many live videos from the early-middle 70s. The Stockholm concert is 1h+, shortly after he recovered from the acidents. Maybe to long for a reaction. And Ruth is slightly in the background. Zappa plays Zappa with his son Dweezil shows similar top notch musicianship of the 2000s. Check "Zomby woof", 2008, ft. Steve Vai and a slightly older Napoleon Murphy Brook as in this clip.
There are multiple multiple multiple volumes of SHUT UP AND PLAY YOUR GUITAR triple albums!!! AND YOU CAN'T DO THAT ON STAGE ANYMORE Volumes and volumes and volumes!! AFTER you get tired of ROXY and ELSEWHERE, FILMORE and tons if live albums!! But my favorite double CD is just called GUITAR!! (BEST unreleased solos ever!!)
In an interview I saw on TH-cam, Zappa said that Ike & Tina were recording in a nearby studio in New York and he asked if the Ikettes could sing backup. Ike said it was okay only if Frank didn't pay them more than $25 each, otherwise it would make him look cheap. Tina was quite proud if their work and played it back for Ike and his response was something along the lines of "What is this shit? "
If you haven't heard 'Inca Roads' please do. Ruth Underwood is amazing and Frank Zappa is a fine guitarist. And yes it IS jazz. Musicians wanted to play with Zappa. His music is so inspired. Really great bands sound better live. (Genesis is best live)
Never could dig Frank Zappa's music, though I often liked his soloing. I pretended to dig it once, when I had a girlfriend who did. The things we do for love.
This is a great reaction, I really enjoyed watching you enjoying it. There are several other performances from this series of shows, all of them amazing.

That percussionist is the great Ruth Underwood. A Juilliard music graduate on Marimba. A great musician and a great human!

@@timfeeley714-25but she graduated from the Zappa school of music. Even better than Julliard!😂

Also sold individually. I have the vinyl box set. I caught a couple of Frank's shows, in the early eighties. It was incredible.
In my opinion in this period he had the best band.

A mad genius, brilliant composer, master of guitar
I agree about being a mad genius!
@@JoneRuiz Listen to Willie the Pimp from the Hot Rats album, and you will understand why Glen called him a master of guitar
Check out Zoot Allures, and Black Napkins, from the Zoot Allures album, for some of Franks absolute best guitar work. 👍

Frank has always offered the best quality of music. Even after his death he continues to show new musicians what is possible.

Never saw this one! Great stuff.
On the studio version, Tina Turner and the Ikettes sang backup.
I see I see. I went to search them now it make sense!

Just fun with one of the guitarists who ever played
NIce!
the all around goat imo
i feel like he mocks different types of music but it is as good as anything in the genre of music he is mocking

@@gmcsrbosavl6964 Pretty much. I do have the One Size Fits All LP. That one's not too bad.
Napoleon Murphy Brock is great
Check out Cozmic debris
Thank you for the suggestion!
Broken Hearts are for assholes.
On the list!
Great song, horrible cut live video...
Zappa is boring, garbage
Just my opinion, but an overrated, egotistical "genius".
Baby Snakes is tolerable
Egotistical? Maybe. Overrated? Absolutely not. Criminally underrated, more like it.
