- Two Chinese female table tennis players, once teammates on China's national team over 40 years ago, never had the chance to compete in the Olympics representing China. Decades later, Ni Xialian, 61, and Tania Zeng, 58, found themselves competing in Paris Olympics for their second home.

she was ranked #3 nationally in China in her early 20s, that makes her top5 globally some 35 years ago
@@mouseisbroken But that was when the rules allowed to use the same color on both side of the paddle, allowing her to surprise opponent constantly with what type of slice she would use in her *very* defensive style.
She initially retired from competition because with that rule change, her style had become massively less effective, and she didn't see a way to adapt.
Last year in 2023, she was quite easily beaten by a french player who is around 3th to 5th ranked in France and wasn't selected for the games. So she is definitively hugely less competitive today than what she was able to do in her early 20s.
