Hard Truck: 18 Wheels of Steel is an incredibly nostalgic game for me. Combined with my enjoyment of ETS 2 and American Truck Simulator, it was only going to be a matter of time before I decided to make a full video talking about it.
Although there are definitely aspects in which this game has aged a little bit, it is undeniable that the core experience of interstate trucking was the main goal in the creation of this first incarnation of SCS' truck simulator games. Join me to find out whether they did a good job!

I remember that there is a sideroad that leads to the train track, which can be found on the road between Phoenix and Las Vegas.
You can look back in this game.

Without things like trucking sims society would collapse under the unsated masculine urge to work, life and die on horseback. So lets thank SCS Software for making the world a bit safer by making this games.

This video dropped the day after I picked up American Truck Simulator. That's quite some luck for me because before playing ATS I didn't care or even know that much about trucking besides what my family told me about their time in the profession. Too bad these games leave out the gas station prostitutes and copious levels of drug dealing/consumption

I remember playing King of the Road back then once and instantly dropping this game. It had everything a game needed for me.
Actually this game has 2 ways to die. Water is one, and the 2nd is being hit by a train. Best what to get eradicated by a train is the small road between Vegas and Phoenix. Somehow your dog survived that too. We also never see this dog and that's funny.
You have rear view mirrors to use them press b for right rear view

Thank you for this great review! I've just noticed the Steam version myself and was surprised to see its been out for 2 years. I was thinking of reinstalling this and wondering how I could make it run (apart from gog, ofc). And thanks for the GPS and acceleration demonstration... that sucked so much in this game.
I loved driving in the rockies, I think that's the best map of them all. But I also found it weird that AI can indicate and the player itself cant. Luckily this was fixed for the next game, 18 WoS Across America.
This game is kinda janky but I cant help myself and love it due to its simplicity. And don't forget the race car and the train easter egg (same death message as in the water).
And speaking about the water: 18 WoS AA didn't have animated water like this game had at all, weirdly enough. It was just some textures and basically the skybox, making it look like water, at least at the seaside.
I played the absolute crap out of this game as a kid. Its still one of my favorite games despite the jank. I made a custom personal mod many years ago that fixes the slow takeoffs and all as well, which made it a lot more tolerable.

We call the smaller highways “state highways” or “state roads” because each individual state is responsible for any state highway in their borders. The interstate highway is federally managed for the the most part.

For chapter 4, if you press B and V you can look out backwards on left and right side. And if you press B or V and (on HUN keyboard) period or comma together, the view gets janky and it despawns traffic and you have to press 1 to get back to interior cam.
I like that both Hard Truck and American Truck Simulator run on the same engine. What a difference
Waching this video send me back to 2009 when i first played this game on my mom's brother laptop when i was 5, you should review the rest of the games aswell

Well said except for two things. First, as someone else has already pointed out, you can set hotkeys to use the rear mirrors on both sides. Second, most cities have multiple entry points, so if you don't see your destination company's logo at one exit, you will most likely find it at the next one.
But yeah, nicely summarized things. Based on your video, I decided to not replay this game in the future
One of 3 games in the franchise that I've NEVER played. Probably would've been a decent game to play as a kid had I known about it.
I put an ungodly amount of time into this game as a kid, I even had a crappy racing wheel & pedals for it 😆 so yeah the intro was right
Haven't played this game, but I spent a lot of time in Hard truck 2 King of the road. From the video and from what I remember, I can say that King of the road is miles better.
As enjoyable as this, I'd love to see ETS2 review. With a section spared for useful and crazy goofy mods would be fun.

I have to disagree with you here. Maybe the simulation / immersion aspect of doing regular trucking across American lands does hold up - but everything else (such as the anemic truck torque) seems like a heavy downgrade from Hard Truck 2. Or, as I fondly remember my localized Lithuanian version - Kelyje 2.

Try downloading the 1.0 version by pirating. Ironically, trucks wont accelerate like poop (somehow, that affects breaking too) with trailers attached in that version. There's no Glutton, the last truck, though, but i think you are fine without it for obvious reasons. Just a sidenote, the worst truck isn't actually the worst when it comes to this game. It has more horsepower than the one you get on easy difficulty.

I have been playing 18 wheels of steel - Pedal to the metal. that much i am sure i was able to make deliveries blindfolded, did never happen, or.. maybe sorta, i was often looking on my tv while running, ithink that game was better than ats/ets. In 18 wos pttm was i as example actually able to see andd chat with my employees, it happen that i had some race with them while we were loaded and some drivers was totally crazy on the roads, that game did not had that slow start but well the game was from 2004 There was more differences example the drivingdid i found too bad in ets and i found the flat nosed trucks weak in power (well in 18 wos did i had the truck with most power and it was top trimmed w/o mods) in ets did i had the cheapest iveco wirh evertything on basic installation (so i guess i cant really compare those trucks) later on did i upgrade my iveco to a really good truck with the best settings and it become dificulty to handle the truck in situations like small roundabouts, that made me to get another brand and last time did i had the best settng what i think, but what is best may be a personal taste (i like when the truck is angry and ready for fight) 🙂
The case my truck is King of the road! may add good driving from my truck 🙂
Anyone who knows how to fix sound on this game? playing on windows 11 and it seems no sound is coming at all (music or ui sounds) nothing is audible

Lol the man complaining about not being able to start at 300rpm. If game has clutch, you should use it, floor engine to max rpm and drop it.
Also brakes problem I think is because of not using engine brake.
I've played HT, it doesn't have either.
