    I totally agree with Don Moen , i have been advising all instrumentalist the same that if they want to play solos they can do it privately not in church to show their talent. Worship music is to assist people to gather praises to the Lord.

    • @Watermelon_Man
      @Watermelon_Man 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Stanley Thomas solos give music life. If I’m playing to show my love and gratefulness, I’m going to go all in when the time is right. Obviously, you don’t go 110% all the time, but to say that you should never go 110% because “it’s not about you” is ridiculous.

      @@Watermelon_Man Very rightly said. I have been practicing that myself too.

    • @sammygutierrez9048
      @sammygutierrez9048 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Watermelon_Man I agree. I'm not sure where people feel the right to distinguish what is worshipful and what is "making it about you". One could easily make the point that if you want the congregation to pray in between songs that the worship leader ask them to pray in the moment and leave it at that. Have just instruments providing atmosphere. To say a prayer on their behave limits what they may feel the need to prayer for.
      As a lead guitarist, i don't let "taking a solo" (not the term I would use) go to my head. I know I am part of a worship team and my part is no bigger than the bassist, keyboard, drums, singers etc. If we are singing about the power of God among us and called to make a joyful noise to the lord the band/worship leaders need to feel it also or else it is just a show. You give your all or else you diminish the message.

    Thanks for this! I'm the sole instrumentalist in our congregation right now. Just yesterday I had a feeling that something was just a little off, and I think this answers what it was. I'm not the focus, so even playing a song can be distracting myself and others from what our pastor is praying or exhorting. I will take this to heart.

    So true sir. I have experienced that from so many sermons and even song evenings. Out in Cape Town South Africa music plays a big role in everyday life. The emphasis on the sensitivity of music is so powerful and should be a cornerstone within the church and all the arenas/platforms where the name of Jesus is lifted up. Musicians do not know how powerful they are to create a holy atmosphere or break that holy atmosphere. To God be the Glory for great things He has done and is doing. Thank you for reminder and would like to see more as I embark to seek His face, even more in this time I am going through I believe that God is faithful to keep His word. Bless you.

    The lesson here is for Aux Keys to be sensitive and heading to the moment.
    It can be just as a distraction if keys are playing something mellow & the song leader is starting escalate in mood. Love that we have all these to work together and extol the name of Jesus.

    Don, Everything you said here I agree with, HOWEVER; there is another side of the coin. Worship can come by shock. A whole group from university were in church, and they were not singing (I was told). We were singing " Your Grace Is Enough." Toward the end we are whispering those words, only sticks playing and maybe a little drum. Then before we go into full volume I play Very Fast double octaves for 2 octaves as loud as I can play it, then arpeggios and big chords etc...I was told that all university students were singing at that point. In Christ Alone we get to "up from the grave he rose", at rose it is not on the beat, but a millisecond off I play loud Cm scales in both hands hitting the first C hard. (Key Eb) Then big arpeggios and playing octaves and you can feel the atmosphere change. We are required to walk in intercession before we come to church and during, putting our radar up in the air in case Jesus wants to change something. We had a normal pianist playing by the music, and I was on CP300 playing by ear and chords playing thirds, scales, and arpeggios. The congregation will look at you and say they would never worship the Holy Spirit, and they just got through singing, Doxology or Gloria Patrie or "Spirit we love you worship and adore you", etc... Sometimes it takes power to move the atmosphere. Sometimes there has to be warfare, and it is still worship. Sometimes a synthesizer needs to be in a sound to move the subwoofer to wake up the dead. This is the other side of the coin as I said. Proverbs 21:16 "The man that wondereth out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead." We however, must be alive in Christ Jesus whether we are in quiet mode or loud, for either way we are changing the atmosphere.

    • @garynorton4647
      @garynorton4647 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For clarification, when I said double octaves on "Your Grace Is Enough", I meant chromatic scale double octaves for 2 octaves. This is only for the advanced pianist, and it must be done only sparingly. Also, "Victory In Jesus", last verse chorus 'with his redeeming blood' ,when you hit blood ,(Key of F) one octave, in double octave chromatic scale starting on C. It seems to charge up the congregation. Sorry for not being very clear.

    As worship leaders, somehow we've arrived at the idea that our giftings in music are suppose to be limited to whats happening on stage. A worship leader sets the stage not for himself but the atmosphere for the Holy Spirit to activate other giftings (other than music) in the meeting. Running through a set of worship songs is not leading worship. Worship is the prescript to what God has on His mind for that particular time by involving the rest of the giftings to come forth as we commune with Him. Worship is the combining, involving, and interacting. There have been times where God anoints one song out of a list of 5, so we stay there, sometimes 20-30 minutes on just one song while the congregation moves and flows ( in their giftings) with the anointing. Never show up to a service with a set list of a few songs. Always be prepared to move in any direction the Holy Spirit leads. Now of course if your doing worship for the entertainment value, then ignore everything I just said. The worship leader gets the ball rolling so to speak, he/she does not keep the ball, but hands the ball off to the other worshipers in the meeting, all the while playing (backing up) what God is doing amongst the other participants. The days of watch while I sing and play an instrument are getting old and predictable. If your involved in meetings/church where the same few people every week are the only ones exercising their gifts, then ask yourself why? Why was Jesus taken up and the Holy Spirit released among men? Why did Jesus say "It is expedient for you that I go away, for if I do not go away the Comforter will not come to you: but if I depart I will send Him to you?" Why? I'll tell you why. One of the main reasons is because Jesus bodily presence could only be in one place at a time, however His Spirit is everywhere. So why do we act like the Holy Spirit is only directing the same few people in our meetings, as if they are the privilege few? I know the choices are limited, but find a church body that do not consider a list of sing-a-long songs worship. Don't sell God's giftings short.

      A worship leader is not focusing on his / her self, but creating the right atmosphere for the presence of holy spirit, by leading the entire music team being sensitive in the atmosphere. There is always the spirit of God behind a worship leader, because he / she is carrying & creating that atmosphere for the presence to manifest,
      If you are a worship leader you can never exchange any thing for the presence of God when you're in the right atmosphere, you can only testified when you have a personal experience you will understand the real meaning & power of worshipping.

    When my Pastor is praying, I play as simple as 1,4 chord progression on my left with a high root note on my right hand. I go to 6th or 3rd chord when my Pastor says for example "I know Hard times will come. I know it's not gonna be simple for us Lord" to give it a darker feeling; and the time my Pastor says like "But I know you will be there to help us Lord." that's when I go to a 4th chord. and that gives a sudden brighter feelings.
