we haven't made any videos on bottom paint removal, but lots of other ones here on TH-cam. Totalboat has a nice product called Totalstrip that we've heard good things about. Helps cut down the mess from sanding, but comes with its own challenges. The other route it is sanding. We sanded our bottom with 80 grit to prepare it for bonding the new coats,as opposed to removing all the old paint down to the barrier coat which is very time-consuming. If we were trying to remove all the old paint ourselves, we would have tried Totalstrip first to see how much that could remove and then sand down what was leftover.
@@Waterlust Hi-- thanks for the video. Sun Cat owner & soon-to-be first time bottom painter. Mine also has older paint atop epoxy barrier coat. When sanding, is there a way to tell if you're going into the epoxy coat? Is the epoxy the gray barrier coat on the rudder? Also, did you paint inside the centerboard housing? Mine will live at a saltwater dock and that's probably a good idea. Unsure how I'd do that on the trailer.
@@wolf3891 Great questions. The epoxy barrier coat is the grey coating that you see on the rudder in this video and then beneath that is the white gelcoat and beneath that is the fiberglass. In general, you want to stop sanding before you start taking off the grey barrier coat. We didn't paint the centerboard or the underside of the keelson because we couldn't reach it on the trailer, but we plan to bring the boat to a yard at some point soon and have it lifted to do that. If you have an affordable yard, it may even be easier to do everything there as it's a bit of a pain to crawl under the boat to sand it on a trailer. Having the boat up high would have helped our lower back significantly! 🤣
Very informative. Nice job!
It looks so great!! 🙌🙌😍😍
The JD Select did all the work!
