    if it were socially acceptable in the aquatic community I would keep a tank looking like this 😂 i love the jungle look! I keep my wisteria floating and the roots are everywhere.

    • @AquariumCoop
      @AquariumCoop  7 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      Maybe you're in the wrong social circles. Most aquarists I know, who are big into fish has tanks like these. These are aquarists who have done it for 20+ years, unlimited fish budgets etc. After a while you develop a style that works for you. Also you tend to gravitate towards people with similar styles.

    • @aquaticma
      @aquaticma 7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Aquarium Co-Op I am in the wrong circle Cory I'm surrounded by saltwater people who keep a few freshwater tanks that refer to plecos as cleaner fish. 😒 That's why I love my TH-cam community 😁 On the other hand my local shrimp breeder would love a tank like this.

      I agree, if the angel fish weren't in there I think you could have added a few more plants and create a new aquascape theme called the wild aquascape or the wilderness!

    • @tyngchinchillachang838
      @tyngchinchillachang838 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the tank is plant mass but no deficiencies but low tech high maintenance. One of the water wisteria stem is 1cm thick.

      Social acceptance is a cancer on society. I remember celebrating individuality . But I guess public education has been high jacked by socialists . Not your fault.

  • @AnthonysOutdoors
    @AnthonysOutdoors 7 ปีที่แล้ว +46

    Absolutely agree on the water changes. I've been keeping fish for 25 years and when I mentioned on a forum that I do a water change twice a year, you would of thought I committed a felony. People use water changes as a crutch. In my opinion if you've got a properly stocked tank with fish and plants, water changes only add stress. Especially to fish that rarely see water changes.

    • @AquariumCoop
      @AquariumCoop  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think it is much harder to achieve a "closed" system. So water changes make it easier, that being said because of the location of this aquarium I enjoy the challenge of such a closed system.

      @@eh9918 It goes into the plants, and eventually you trim them and take it out. you take it out either way, the question is "do you let the plants take it out in a targeted manner or do you dump out tons of water to remove a tiny bit of nitrates"?

    I love jungle tanks, they just seem more natural because mother nature doesn't grow just a little. I kind of like hunting through the foliage to find what fish is hiding where.
    Those Corydorus are bloody beautiful. I have always loved Corydorus, no specific reason just like them. Maybe because they get along with anything.

When me or my father took some kitchen ustentils or bowl for our tanks she stop using it and she told us to have our proper stuff... so I took them when she sleep or isn't home. Have you ever had an algae explosion after taking out that much fast growing plant mass? That stuff is like a nutrient sponge. There is still a ton of it in there though so I guess it could just keep on rocking. I caused an algae bloom in a tank once when I cut out a jungle of Brazilian Pennywort. So cool!

    This is what the wisteria does in my Neocaridina shrimp tanks! It grows so fast. My water sprite also grows like crazy and is constantly spreading and forming new plants! Mayaca is another plant that I just can’t keep up with because it grows so fast. But the Mayaca comes in handy because you can float it as a guppy grass substitute... I fertilize with API Leaf Zone once per week and that’s it! I use API Leaf Zone because it’s shrimp safe(doesn’t contain copper).

    Great video Cory,it was a funny 20minutes for me because my tank has been getting over grown with Wisteria as well and when I first seen your jungle I knew right then my jungle was just as bad so I gave mine a haircut as well! My poor Angelfish had little room to swim as well,especially in a small 40g but my cherry barbs,lemon tetras love to spawn in the plants so they still have their jungle,just smaller and more compact. The leaves on my wisteria become much more pinnate once they get near the top of the tank where the light is stronger as well,it's really cool to see how the leaf shapes change from low light to high light. Oh,lest I forget my Ruffled Sword is now smiling at me now because it's getting a bunch more light,now it will again grow 2 leaves a week again,big one's at that! Anyway I too enjoy just letting the tank evolve and change over time with very little intervention from me,I don't do water changes but once a month now which suits me just fine. Patience is key in this hobby and the rewards are incalculable in my opinion. Understanding of natures ways is so low these days it behooves one to view their aquarium as window to the larger world and to appreciate the genius and wonder of natures intrinsic ability to do what it needs to do without our constant fussing about! LOL

    I really wish my water wisteria would grow like that. I have co2 tabs that I use, they have made a big difference in how my plants grow. I also use seachem flourish. I also have seachem substrate as well, that is mixed with a Sandy substrate so the roots of my plants can plant themselves better. My doesn't have a grow light, but it gets plenty of light I also have a multi colored light that most plants like, that helps promote the growth of them, they also get alot of indirect sunlight.

    Water changes add fresh minerals back into your tank remove excess nitrates and waste, strips are not totally accurate. I can't think of a reason why performing a normal water change would be anything but beneficial. The idea is to not get to the point where you HAVE to perform a water change. It is preventive maintenance. I love the tank btw, wish I had the space!

    • @jamesgrant3343
      @jamesgrant3343 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also steady CO2 injection will cause available calcium to be dissolved over time so weekly removing water and adding remineralised water is a stable, low stress way to maintain PH, KH and GH over time as well as ensuring that there’s sufficient minerals for shell builders (snails etc). Doesn’t have to be a massive change but 10-20% per week is plenty

    Hi Cory been watching your videos for a while now. I really like your approach for a more natural tank environment (not just visually but also regarding algae and nutrients). While my parameters are good but the algae in my tank is getting out of control. Other videos suggest doing 50% water changes 2x a week to remove nutrients. I see that you have a different method here. You mentioned at the end of your video that you guys are writing this down. where can i find out more about the methodology behind your approach. thanks again for your great videos
