  • Needed an extra outlet in the garage to plugin my new Flexzilla Zillareel extension cord. Extended an existing outlet for the garage door opener. Ran a wire through two cieling joists and had to install a large drywall patch.

When your house was built, the receptacle for overhead door openers was not required to be GFCI protected. You by using that cord reel by passed safety equipment used on a grounded surface(concrete floor). Now for the problem. By adding a receptacle to the existing one for the overhead door opener, you have modified it. Now, if 2017 or 2020 NEC is the adopted code for where you live, your install is in violation of the code. It says “All 15 and 20 ampere 125 volt receptacles installed within garages must have GFCI protection. Since you chose to show yourself installing it, hopefully no one will ever be in your garage using something plugged into the cord reel gets shocked or electrocuted. You as the installer will be liable in court and your insurance company will deny any claim. If you go to court, you will lose the case guaranteed.
Always be safe, the life you save may be your own.

Thanks for the effort. Several errors already pointed out but all are correctable by knowledgeable DIYers. Did you really use a new work box on your new outlet though? Your receptacle hole is not big enough. Suspect you used an old work box otherwise you’d show more patchwork.

Did you test your new outlet to see if the test button on your plug-in tester tripped the gfci?

Drilling a hole in the side of a box to pass wire is not allowed, next time just pry the old box out and replace with an old work box, and whats up with that low voltage wire going under that blank plate?

Not sure. It was like that when we bought the house. I think it has to do with the old security system that was removed at some point.

WTH? You showed the pigtails, but sped up the camera so fast that it was impossible to see how you attached them, where you attached them, as well as the new wiring.
