What Happened to Danny Masterson and the Cast of That '70s Show?

  • Hanging out down the street, you could find the cast of THAT '70S SHOW, Fox's go-to sitcom from 1998-2006. Lasting eight seasons and an even 200 episodes, THAT '70S SHOW had an ensemble that found a charismatic group of characters in the Wisconsin burbs and making the most out of that basement.
    Yet, as lighthearted as the show was, some very dark business was going on behind the scenes, as co-star Danny Masterson's rape trial and conviction proved. In this episode, we dig into what's happened to the close-knit cast, many of whom came under fire for their support of Masterson throughout his trial and after his conviction, with this a tale of Scientology, wealth, power, and abuse. That said, it's not all dark, with co-stars like Topher Grace and Laura Prepon going on to long-running careers, and, despite everything, Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher have had one of the better Hollywood marriages. Yet, one can't deny the Masterson case and the icky support from many of the cast members have cast a shadow over the show's legacy, as well as Netflix's ill-timed sequel series, That '90s Show.
    What do you think of the show's legacy now? Let us know in the comments!

    Topher grace got a bad rap because he didn’t hang out with the cast.
    He didn’t do that for either
    1. Like myself, he liked his coworker but they are HIS COWORKERS!!! Once the work is done. He goes home.
    Or
    2. He knew the others were doing scummy things and didn’t want to be associated with them.

    • @Simon-xc5oy
      @Simon-xc5oy 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is one way to see him. I never saw him as a nerd though. More a sort of everyman, straight up normal to average American high school kid of the 70s. One of those blokes that is always around in the background and there is nothing stand out about him, but a solid reliable type. Even so he can get up to mischief and lark about with the rest of them. He was just one of the masses. Not a bad boy, not especially talented, not truly head turning handsome and so on. Those types were all covered with the other cast members, so you had the bad boy, the ethnic guy, the handsome bloke the pretty girl and the female version of Eric which was Donna. She was more quirky and a bit sharper, but they were just the everyman / woman type that was represented in the show.....

    • @sideeyed7682
      @sideeyed7682 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Simon-xc5oyHe was more of a snarky degenerate, they all were, but in their own particular way . He took a year off to figure out what he wanted to do with his life but was just dicken around for the majority of it. He routinely burned in his parents basement, was man enough to propose but not man enough to tell his parents about it, got his first arrest from mooning someone, missed his graduation, and forged his dad’s signature, just so he didn’t know he was failing. Not to mention he was a bonified smartass, loved outwitting his dad every chance he got.
      He was always eager to make man decisions but never reflected on the outcome of those decisions in the perspective of a man. That’s what makes him really relatable because it’s the general norm for kids to have that mentality today but the seventies was the era that revolutionized it. Him and Red dynamic was realistic to the common household because Red came from a background of growing up to early, being disciplined, punctual, a gentleman, while Eric is the complete opposite, not because he doesn’t know how to or can’t but simply because he didn’t want to.

    • @Simon-xc5oy
      @Simon-xc5oy 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes that is all exactly true. At times I hated the way Red treated him it was borderline cruelty. But he could be so annoying and useless and went out of his way to provoke him. Red being an ex soldier as you say, meant he was strict and by the book, and yet Eric just wants to be a free spirit and enjoy himself. It all fitted and worked as part of the whole cast. The other thing that sort of annoyed me about Eric was that he was not good at anything. He was clever, smart and book clever to a degree, but not practical at all which annoyed Red. And he never learned or improved. If that had been me in that situation, I would have got more and more annoyed and upset with Red and I would have learned how to look after myself and be more self reliant at an earlier stage so I could rebel and get out of there to be my own man as soon as possible. You can see Eric wants to do that, but cant get there as he is just so incompetent at most things. And the writing never lets him change or evolve or improve himself. If Topher had not wanted to leave, his character would still be more or less the same as when he starts in season 1. Jackie matures a little and stands on her own, Donna learns and evolves and grows up and stronger as well. Michael is still an idiot but gets the chance to do what he wants and even Hyde ends up with that record store etc.....Everyone keeps mocking and making fun of Eric because of his faults and issues, and if that was a real person it would wear them down eventually, so they would either try to change or push back harder in some way. But he just keeps keeping on and wings it, and remains a fairly nice person despite everything....Donna likes him for it which is all that matters to him too.....

    • @sideeyed7682
      @sideeyed7682 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Simon-xc5oy Interesting point about Eric not being good at anything but I Think that’s one of the relatable aspects about him. I think that was a majority of the reason why he was rebellious because it was the only spark he really had in his life besides donna.
      Being againt “The Man” was big at that time and he fitted that crowd, probably thinking if he didn’t have an escape from a life of mediocrity soon he’ll end up like his Dad, Bitter and mean. But he was failing to realize until the later seasons he had it better than his dad ever did and instead of taking advantage of the opportunity and being somebody, he was living like his youth would last forever.
      A lot of people didn’t like it when he “Moved to Africa” but I really thought it was one of the strongest character developments in the show. He wasn’t making the descion for his Dad, or Donna, or to show off, he was making it as a man, and for his Future. Even though he had barley any screen time in the last episode, that’s probably the most mature I’ve seen him acted in the entire series, he seemed like a young man finally getting his life together.

    Kutcher and Kunis could have avoided all the backlash over Masterson if they hadn't tried to downplay his crimes and promote his character. Families have members that are murderers in prison that they still care about. But you can't defend that person as a "good person" even if you still care about them. That's the difference.

Then went off the rails again. So badly that they ended up recasting her character as it was getting too awkward to explain where the sister keep going. They had woven her into the plot lines and family drama a lot more the second time she came back so they had to keep her in some how and ended up getting a new actress to play here. She passed away a few years back. I blame AVI ARAD for destroying Sam Raimi's ambition in SPIDER-MAN 3
    He forced him to include Venom just so he could sell more toys
    And so, Raimi made Venom look stupid

      Yes a few....she is a nasty piece of work in it though. She is the reason the lead character is in Jail and is shallow, manipulative and devious and a liar to name a few traits. When I first saw her in the show I ended up hating her by the end of the first season, but that is the point. I thought there was something weird about her that I could not put my finger on...part of it was the hair, it was too dark for her skin tone and it made her face look elfin and even catlike. I had never seen the 70s show, and this was the first thing I had seen her in. When I saw her as Donna its like a different person, and I realized her hair was natural red, which explains why it looks so odd in Orange is the New Black. Its dyed and does not suit her at all. But she is very good in both shows. Donna is a great character and Voss or whatever she is called in Orange, is a truly scummy character, who sort of redeems and improves towards the end of the last season, but not by much.

    I see people trying to defend Masterson and saying that his charges are made up, but that thinking just perpetuates rape culture. The fact of the matter is that people seldom make up stories that they were abused. So when someone comes forward with allegations of abuse, you can just accept them. And even if hard rape didn't take place, the survivor's experience and feelings of violation are still real, which means something still happened. Dude's a rapist, and it sounds like he's been a rapist for a very long time and that this was known behavior.
