    If you see this comment, I just wanted to say this is the best explanation video for the MG124. I have an MG166CX-USB myself, but I didn’t know everything until now. Your explanation was super clear. Thank you so much!

    Many thanks Bruno. Nearly twenty minutes on the mixer model I own (with more to come). As always, the clarity and perfect speed of your delivery really helps my understanding. After a recent comment you made elsewhere, I'm now extra careful to not damage the mixer's knobs.
    I'm not offended to hear this described as an entry-level model. But it is sometimes used for broadcast work. My own MG124CX was passed on to me by a contact at production company, who used it to mix a BBC daytime drama serial.

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello Alan, thanks for watching - really glad you can benefit from this video in such an immediate way :) The entry-levelness of this mixer is mainly in its build quality rather than the sound - they sound very good for the price point! And yes if I was given a mixer that was used on a BBC production I'd definitely put it to use!

    I want to thank you for all your training videos. My wife and I finally purchased the Yamaha MG12XU (I think that this is a successor to the model in this video). I may not have all the functions down yet, but I understand most of the principles.

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Congratulations on your new mixer! Yes there are no major differences between the MG12UX and the mixer in the video - there are minor differences in the connectors (combo inputs on the first four channels and no more analog insert points) as well as in how the effects are selected but you should be up to speed pretty quickly. Let me know if you have any questions!

      GLB Productions I just finished watching your video twice and there is one channel I don't quite comprehend the use for. After the "rec out" rcas there is the "foot switch" and below that, right about minute 4:12, you talk about 2 aux sends. I didn't understand what those are for. I use the effects that come with the mixer, but I don't use those buttons. I'm I doing something wrong? I personally think I don't quite understand what can I use those for. Do you have a video about that?

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah ok I understand. This mixer has two aux sends - the first one (the blue knobs) can be pre-fader (the level of the aux send is not affected by the level of the channel fader) or post-fader (aux send level tracks the level of the channel fader) and is usually used for stage monitors. I have a video here about those, it's rather old but still accurate: th-cam.com/video/MUAbIGGkeUk/w-d-xo.html
      The second aux send (the white knobs) normally sends signal to the mixer's internal effects. However, if you plug into the effect send jack, it can be used as a second post-fader aux send, to send signal to an external effects unit or something else. I have a video about that which you've probably watched already: th-cam.com/video/GoIiofqEIyU/w-d-xo.html
      What you are doing is perfectly correct, it's just nice to know that this mixer has quite flexible routing options.

    Very good video review! I have this very same mixer, except mine is a 16 channel. My question is, when I hook up my microphones I am unable to control the volume with the faders. I can only control the volume with the master. The microphone stays engaged, no matter if the on button is “on or off.” is there a way to fix this issue?

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm, that doesn't sound correct - when the "ON" button is disengaged there should not be any output from that channel. Perhaps take your mixer to your local Yamaha service centre and let them take a look.

    Enjoyed the MG124CX tutorials. I have the mixer, but recently using only ch1 connected to remote mic rcvr XLR output and I plug in an inductive switch mode power supply, such as laptop, to common multi AC outlet, the mixer output goes to +3db loud static output. I unplug the mixer ch1 XLR connector and plug back in, the high output static goes away, all is good. I repeat on other channels with same remote mic XLR output connected to any of the other mic XLR channel inputs and plug in the same switch mode power supply, no high output static on any other mic channels, only occurs on ch1. Any thoughts?

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds to me like the input on channel 1 is damaged - typically channel 1 input is the first one to fail because it tends to be used most often. In this case I would suggest avoiding using channel 1 if possible, or using it for non-critical inputs such as a talkback mic.

      Hi Eduardo, this model has been discontinued for some years so the second hand price will depend very much on the seller and your local market conditions. I would check e-bay and other such websites to get an idea of how much people are asking in your region/city and negotiate from there based on the condition of the mixer.

    I have the Yamaha MW 12C mixer unit and mine crapped out with extremely little use on it and it was in new/mint condition although past warranty. Mine has never been outside my home. I bought it new and have only plugged in a drum machine, midi keyboard, CD player and a stereo jack for my iPhone if I want to play along with youtube music vids. Here is how it has failed for no reason whatsoever. The sliders have no control at all. The "ON" buttons that light up have no control at all either. Somehow something packed it in, in the circuitry I guess and anything that is now plugged into it is either on or off depending whether or not the PFL button is pushed in or not. The sliders and ON button give no control at all therefore all connected items rely strictly on their incoming volume and the only way I can control volume is with the MONITOR turn knob. I can have all the "ON" buttons off and all the sliders off at the bottom but it doesn't turn anything off.
    In other words, the mixer isn't mixing volumes at all. I can basically run one sound item through and control it's volume to my monitor speakers with the Monitor volume knob. I suppose the only way to run more than one thing would be to control every items volume as it goes into the mixer just to hear them all through the monitor speakers but each item's volume would have to individually adjusted at the source rather than inside the mixer.
    I don't know if I can get it fixed yet or if it's just better to buy a new one. Pisses me off .If anyone has advice as to why everything has bypassed the internal functions of the mixer, please leave a comment.

    Great vid as always Bruno!
    I've used to own this exact model before purchasing the Mg20XU...
    If I may I would like to suggest that when it comes to stereo,it is not pan(orama) but it's called 'Bal(ance)'...in some DAWs like Pro Tools,the balance control has 2 pots...one for the left channel and one for the right channel...needless to say that in Live Sound it's pretty useless... ;)
    But I habe some questions too!
    Is there a reason why the Mid pots are missing from stereo channels?
    Combo inputs are worser in quality than separate Jacks and XLR?
    How do you set the Aux Send Master if you connect an external Fx unit?Do you set it to unity gain (I think that's the arrow point) and then adjust from the Aux channel pot,the amount of the effect?or the other way around?

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Cris! Yes you are absolutely right - it should be balance for stereo channels, not pan! Stereo channels are, in effect, already panned hard left and right.
      I suspect they removed the mid controls from the stereo channels as a cost-cutting measure.
      The disadvantage of the combo input is that you cannot have two connectors plugged into the channel at once - with separate mic and line inputs you can leave the mic input plugged in and plug into the line input for temporary use eg tracking vs mixdown in a recording studio. Yes this will disconnect the mic input but it means you do not have to unplug the mic input and potentially lose track of the connector. It also gives some backup capability in case one of the connectors fails.
      Yes that's right - aux master at unity gain and then adjust the channel levels individually.
      Thanks for watching my friend!

    • @CrisValk
      @CrisValk 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      GLB Productions You're very welcome! But what about the FX return?set to Unity gain too?
      but a question rises spontaneous at this moment...so Is there a moment when you Don't set those to Unity gain?
      maybe to prevent from overloading/clipping the Input of the FX unit and/or the Input of the return channel?
      last but not least...what does it do the red Stereo knob below the blue Return knob?
      perhaps to route the effect or not to the Master output?
      Ps someday I'm gonna list a series of questions for an interview about you and your job...then maybe you can post it to your channel...what do you think about it?

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will typically return the effect to a stereo channel rather than to the FX return, mainly to have the effect on a fader rather than a knob. If using the stereo return I would use the knob as a sort of master FX level so it would not be at unity gain most of the time.
      Yes, I would back off on the FX send in the event that the input of the effects unit was overloading.
      The red knob is to route the stereo return to the stereo bus, the blue knob is to route it to aux 1 ;)
      Hmm, surely you have other more worthy people to interview ;) But sure why not!

      @CrisValk 7 ปีที่แล้ว

The basic features and routing are the same, as they are on all analog mixers. You should be able to work out the bells and whistles by experimentation and by using the manual ;)

    Hi Bruno, I'm not sure if you still answer questions on this video after 2 years. I have a problem with groups, that I could not solve.
    I want to route channel 1 and 2 to group output 1 and channel 3 and 4 to group output 2.
    I want to use the PAN poti to balance more or less portions of the signal to each channel.
    For this I press the stereo and the 1-2 knob on each channel and connect 2 stage monitors to group output 1 / 2.
    It works fine so far. But when I turn the pan poti, not only the signal on the group monitors is changed, but also the signal on the main output to the pa!
    Is there a solution to avoid that?
    The reason for that is: The drummer should hear more of the bass player on one monitor. The singers should better hear each other with less bass and drums on the other monitor. But the audience should hear the full mix.

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mulldruf, I strongly recommend not using the groups as monitor sends, as you will experience the problems above! Use the aux sends instead, those will enable you to set monitor levels independent of the main mix.

      You would use one of the 'line in' connections on your receiver.

    Hi, what kind of cable would you use if you were to connect a powered monitor? Going from the aux of the mixer out to the monitor? I have seen some different types including speaker cables, instrument cables and balanced cables. Thanks!

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on the connectors on each end - if your mixer aux output is balanced quarter inch and the input on the powered monitor is female XLR, you'd need a cable that was balanced quarter inch to male XLR. If the mixer output was on XLR, then you would need a female to male XLR cable, also referred to a mic cable.

    Hi I have this same mixer. It's been used frequently in a pub for karaoke nights. The first 3 channels and the effect channel have a noticable hiss noise when turned on probably from heavy abuse over the years. Do you know if there is any way to fix this?

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd suggest sending the mixer in for service - could be that the gain pots in those channels need replacement.

    • @tozguitar
      @tozguitar 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      couldyou please explain how i connect this to my soundcard? I have two inputs and 2 outputs on the souncard. I have the 2 outputs from the soundcard comming on the stereo channel 11/12. The group 1/2 outputs from the mixer are going to the inputs of the souncard. When i'm recording a track it seems to record not only my guitar but the whole mix again. I'm obviusly doing something wrong ????

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you want to use your group output to record just one channel you have to use the select switches near the fader to send just that one channel to the group - other channels should be de-selected from the group.

    • @tozguitar
      @tozguitar 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think i finally have it,. Souncard outputs are connected to "2tr in" Rec out from mixer goes to soundcard inputs. 2 tr in is selected to monitor. monitor/phones is set to stereo. My monitors are connected to l/r monitor out. Seems to be working for me now.

      In this case you'd connect it to the line level input with the pad switch depressed, if available.

    I have two questions that you might be able to help me with. (1) I'm using Audacity to record my sound tracks. At some point, the program stops - freezes. Is it possible that my
    Yamaha MG10XU is running too HOT..
    Also, (2) the Audacity program won't recognize my voice when it's coming from my headset,
    through the Yamaha. I have to redownload, the driver to the Yamaha in order for it to process
    into my Audacity as well as my DEVICE system in my computer - Windows 10.
    Have you ever had problems like this with the Yamaha MG10XU?

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bob I've never used the mixer/DAW combination that you refer to in your question, but generally when a DAW freezes it's due to insufficient RAM or some bug in the software that makes it incompatible with certain computers and/or configurations. I suggest trying different computers to see if you can reproduce the problem.

    I have a question, trs balanced cables, if i use them from mixer, to amp. amp to speakers will it improve my sound quality?
    with my mics as well.

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Balanced cables between your mixer and amplifier should reduce the level of noise in your system - it definitely won't hurt the sound quality but it may not improve it. Speaker cables are always unbalanced.
