Dude!!!!! Thanks for uploading this! I've been waiting for someone to explain how to achieve that classic "watched too many times" vhs look for ages! Well mapped out and I can't wait to play with the node settings!!
Is it possible if you could make a Blender 2.8 version? Cuz I did everything you did in this tutorial, and it didn’t work, or I’m just really confused.
its all working well but i want to double the output resolution, when i do this it only has color in the bottom left of the final picture how can i fix this? just because 640x480 is sometimes too small
in the color filter section of the nodes, find the two crop nodes (they should be in the lower line) and change the right/down bars to whatever resolution you want. so if you want to double, change "right" from 626, the default, to 1236 (double minus 4 to account for the border) and change "down" to 960 for each of the two crop nodes
I can't get the video to be in the background and even when rendering it out nothing shows up, I am trying to accomplish this in 2.79 and it is just not working. Any help would be appreciated
I'm having the same issue. It was working earlier, don't know what happened now. EDIT: Never mind, it turned out there was nothing in the noise.mp4 area, so I had to extract it and then insert it back in
there is something wrong i download your vhs file but on your blender you have the free unused button and on my blender i don't have the free unused button :(
Hypothetically, I want to achieve a clean “master tape” look in my render - with no noise. Can I just simply turn the noise node completely off or is it baked in?
For now I'd scroll all the way to the right in the node editor to where it says "Composite", swap the two inputs in the "Add" node and turn down its "Fac" all the way to 0 like so: i.imgur.com/1A9rv0M.png
A little update I managed to find an even better way to achieve the look I wanted. I still switched the nodes like you said, but I changed the blend mode to ‘Mix’ and the results are fantastic! Your plugin is fantastic, dude! Also, out of curiosity, did you have to scale the resolution down on your test video here or just change the aspect ratio?
Ahh thank you! The only way this can be considered a "plugin" is if I made it into a node group so it can then be imported onto other projects 🤔 The video node's already attached to the scale node so I just needed to convert the video into a suitable format
Sorry, the best :D. Is there any update of this FX? Everything is very-very cool... but I would like some, for example, horizontal noise&distort lines that moves from up to down or viseversa.
Glad you liked it :D I developed the project files while running a Linux distro, so I used VirtualBox just to make sure it would work properly with other systems
As for additional effects, I might try rainbow banding, scratches etc. but I'm worried that it might look a bit "artificial" Might have a way of adding another texture in the .blend file instead of packing yet another stock video (like christopher huppertz' vhs glitch)
It's ok if you say in the file "download christopher huppertz vhs video from this link", it's not necessary to be inside the blend file. I had downloaded that video and there are some vertical lines in the very beggining. I'm not very familiar with distorting nodes in compositor... but I think about using that footage, blur those lines and use it for distort horizontal and finally mix with original footage. Other problem is that that video is B&W. If you convert that to alpha... you loose any black noise. You get only white lines... maybe an dilate node to include black noise?
There's a bug! When you change the image size, there is a 640x480 colored box in bottom left... and the rest of the image is black and white :/ . I have to change some values in Crop nodes.
having a problem where the video of the project is suppose to show up at 5:10 in the background. I can't see the preview at all, and looking it up online didn't give me an answer
It's either converting the video to 30fps and changing the project to 30fps also Or just changing the project to 24fps If you're converting the video, it's more convienient to just use a frame rate conversion tool for that, but here's how to do it in Blender, just in case: To convert the video in Blender you'd need to open up a new Blender project, import the video file into the VSE, add a Speed effect strip on it and dragging the end handle of the video strip to the end handle of the corresponding audio strip. On the timeline pane, the end frame should match the end point of the strips. After all that, render the project into a video file.

Windows 7 default video and those pre installed songs were fire like that tuna one gosh that was so good
thank you for this, i use 2.79 because it's difficult (for me) to use 2.8 or higher, now i know how to make some cool videos with this
you dont understand how much i needed this
i thank you
Thanks for the 2.8 version.
Yes, it was me who requested it because the the 2.7x version was broken, crashes in 2.8
This music is FIRE.
OMG, this worked so good so many things to tweak. Thanks again BGVC you da man!
good effect, takes too long to render.

it does not work with 2.8 version

@@TheIridiumic138 how did you do this?
@@TheIridiumic138 nevermind
Man, you are a lifesaver! Thank you!
Would you recommend any VHS noise VST plugins for Audacity, I'm having trouble finding any.
Ah yes DKC music

BGVC Thanks so much for your help, man
And please excuse the repeated question on your ‘VHS Effect 2.0’ video. I’ll be deleting that shortly.
A little update

Can these be used on any other software's other than blender?
I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!
My result had the video playing twice as fast which cut off the audio half way through :(
ok now it just gets stuck on the first frame
i might be a little late but does it work on pictures or only videos?
i did everything and yet i get a black screen.......help please :'(
Fantastic video thank you so much!
TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES!!
the audio is normal but the video is slow how to fix this
Anyone know?
The FPS i think
hey it rendered fine but the video is slow and the audio is normal
NVM, the video has to be 30 fps
@@0zne. What processor do you have? It's because you have to have a good computer
why does it say render disabled?
pls make a node group so i can put it on an existing project with append

One of the best Blender VHS FX I found. Thanks.
Why did you use VirtualBox? What's (or were) your OS?

Try changing the frames or unchecking-then-checking "Backdrop"
Thanks, bro! :)
when I change resolutions, some parts are unsaturated, how do I fix this?
i think it does not work anymore with the new update
Same here.

Everybody know how that Windows 7 Video look like 🙂
what happends if I want to render it in the scene
You'll have to replace the Movie Clip node with a Render Layer node
Seems cool, but doesn't work for me. Idk... something could be wrong with it.
Bit of bump; I have a video that's 24fps, but the project's 29.97fps.
Is there a way to fix the difference?
It's either converting the video to 30fps and changing the project to 30fps also
Or just changing the project to 24fps
If you're converting the video, it's more convienient to just use a frame rate conversion tool for that, but here's how to do it in Blender, just in case:
To convert the video in Blender you'd need to open up a new Blender project, import the video file into the VSE, add a Speed effect strip on it and dragging the end handle of the video strip to the end handle of the corresponding audio strip. Use hybrid to convert to 30fps.
when im' savin' it, it says "premission denied"... any idea why man?
too fast, can't follow, and my Blender doesn't even look like this
blender render so my model can show up plz?
You would have to render the model/animation into a separate video first, then putting the video through the VHS filter project.
Can I use this?
I mean, of course
amazing man!!!!!! tysm!!
Very helpful, but the shitty music drove me nuts.
i cant take this seriously
Windows 7???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
too hard cuz i'm a beginner
Instructions unclear, I bombed North korea
Ps: Seriously I didnt understand what the frick you did with the textures in blender...
