  • BARBARY COAST, with book, music, and lyrics by William Penzner, opened on February 28, 1978 at the Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco, California, and closed on March 11, 1978. The musical, which spanned a period from 1897 to 1906, related the tale of heavyweight boxing champion of the world and saloon owner James J. Corbett (Jerry Lanning) and his affair with Nob Hill debutante Cynthia Carter (Marcia Rodd). Featuring a moving cable car, a ballet battle of the Tong Wars, and a recreation of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the team of William Morris (sets), Madeline Graneto (costumes) and Martin Aronstein (lights) created "one of the last really lavish stage events," according to a two-page article in the production's playbill. Jack Bunch staged and directed the world premiere, with choreography by Ed Nolfi. Songs in this clip include "Overture," "You're on the Barbary Coast," "They Struck Her Name from the Blue Book Set 'Cause She Made Headlines in the Pink Police Gazette," "Love is Everything," "Entr'acte," "How Long Can a Heart Go on Loving," "Ride, Ride, Ride," and "Finale: Love is Everything."
