If you're paying so little attention to your kid that them doing something drastic "for attention" starts to sound like something they'd reasonably do maybe it's time to seriously reevaluate your parenting strategy

FAR too many adults not just parents are like this tho.
Ignoring or being extremely dismissive of the youth/kids just because they're the adults.
Heck older adults do it to the younger adults just off the strength of "i've lived longer so AUTOMATICALLY I know better".

Exactly, like when my older sister and mom says that I don't understand how the human body works at age 15 and my sister daughter is alright I Yelled at her saying if the water is to hot or too cold for your hand then don't let her drink it. She gives me the "I don't have time for this" almost 3 weeks later her baby is hurt from the inside to outside I called the CPS on her saying she not fit to care for a baby. All it took was one check up and they found burns on her. She said that she will disown me and I said go ahead at least i can care for a baby unlike you. My mom became legal guardian actually caring for her health physically, my mom said that I should have told her but I gave her the "I don't have time for this" Today I am 18 with my sister resenting me but came to the fact that if I didn't stop her the baby would be dead and would. Today she finally gets to be her mother again with actual knowledge of caring for a child

I was 12. I was in the back of the class having a panic attack. Teacher asks what’s wrong. I tell her that I feel panicked and I don’t know why, it feels like I can’t breathe, and I feel trapped. Teacher says I’m just being an overdramatic teen. Sure enough, 8 years later, I’m diagnosed with severe anxiety

I also had a panic attack in the back of my classroom in 1st year(13-14) because the teacher was talking about bullying.I had been bullied for years and it had given me depression and caused me to attempt to take my own life at age 11

    • @pirategirl1588
      @pirategirl1588 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

I had PTSD after I had cancer and used to have panic attacks. It would become next to impossible to breathe, my chest would tighten, my heart rate would jump through the roof, I'd get dizzy, then start sweating, to where it felt like I'd jumped in a pool of water with my clothes on.
The things I learned to help stop panic attacks, or control them when they start to happen, are:
-Put a cold, wet wash cloth (or papertowel) on the back of your neck
-Sit down and put your head between your knees
-Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth and concentrate solely on your breathing; blocking everything else out
-While still breathing, close your eyes, think of happy memory, and focus on that until the panic attack passes.
-Keeping a spongy, or soft rubber ball, with you that you can squeeze, and focus on when you feel anxious can help in preventing panic attacks (If you'll type in: "Splash balls" in a search engine online, you should get a number of places to order the spongy balls, which you leave dry and squeeze)
-Take a spiral bound notebook with you and a pen, or pencil, wherever you go, and if you start to feel overwhelmed, you can draw or write in it. Even if it's nothing more than writing, "I feel anxious. I feel anxious. I feel anxious," focusing on something else will help you get through that moment of panic. Or you can draw simple happy faces, like this :) Anything to refocus you will help!
-If you have a cell phone that has access to the Internet, you can go to your Play Store and type in: "Apps for anxiety" and it will give you a list of applications you can download onto your phone, which will be a click away, that can help you, when you're feeling overwhelmed.
I hope these things will help!

      @pirategirl1588 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Sorry! I forgot:
If you'll smell rubbing alcohol, it will help prevent you from vomiting. If you don't have a bottle of rubbing alcohol, you can buy individually wrapped rubbing alcohol wipes, and keep a few with you at all times!

Thanks, i just learned what happens when you have a panic attack, and i realised that i had a lot of panic attacks when i was young, since i would often “forget” how to breathe when i woke up at night, i also for some reason crawled aggressively on my bed sometimes imagining i was like far away from the wall or something. This would happen for no reason

My school guidance counselor called my parents because "a bunch of my friends heard about me hurting myself and were concerned." Found out it was one chick who did this a lot but I was having suicidal thoughts, the counselor didnt help me and when I saw my parents reaction to it I lied and said I did it for attention (which wasnt too much of a lie since I did want attention but in this case I wanted help and sympathy) it was them guilt tripping me and saying I'd be hurting them and killing myself is a sin that I said I did it for attention. Instead of helping me they made everything worse. I'm now on medication and diagnosed with ptsd, severe anxiety, and severe depression, my doctor went so pale when she looked over my paperwork it made me want to say "oh no I'm just kidding." They thought it was the usual teenage exhaustion until I was lying flat on a hotel bed, sweating and saying "If you knew how much pain I was in, you wouldn't be doing this to me". Then I started to notice the track trend was going closer and closer to our house and I kept warning them that it could directly hit us as a major hurricane. They ignored me and didn't prepare and eventually basically told me I'm just a stupid kid and too shut up.

Same. They only realized I was even depressed when I up and told my mom all of a sudden "I just barely stopped myself from cutting myself just now because of how bad i feel." or something like that. And then she denied that it could possibly be that bad or some such nonsense. Luckily, I didn't need her to feel needed. And, I'm not only still here, but I also defeated those feelings. Only every now and again do I slip into slightly negative thoughts, but I now have a way of recognizing it and pulling myself out of it before it gets bad enough to affect me. 😊 ...I'm more likely to get insomnia instead 😅

Why do so many so called 'grown ups' teach children that going to the toilet is as bad as committing a crime (even though they also go to the toilet - a natural bodily function)?

My mom was constantly blowing off our health problems growing up. When I was 8 I had a painful bump on my gums above the upper right back tooth that i told my mom about, but she kept telling me it was normal and it was just my adult tooth growing in. It kept getting bigger everyday to the point where it was noticable, but the pain went away on its own so i didnt complain. When my dad saw me 2 weeks later he asked what happened to my cheek and i told him that i had a bump in my mouth but mom said it was normal. He took one look at it and was like "yeah, thats not normal" and immediately took me to his dentist. turns out it was an absess. the infection ate away at the nerves in 3 of my teeth (explaining the sudden loss of pain). i ended up needing all 3 molars removed, which gave me a whole wack of other dental issues down the line but thats another story...

Anyways long story short he ended up having parasites and it took to rounds of meds to get rid of them and while he's still alive and healthy he's permanently stunted in size because the parasites ate all the nutrition he should've been using for growth in that super important stage of growth.

I told my mom, but she just brushed it off over and over again stating nothing was wrong and I was probably exaggerating. I eventually told my dad and he convinced my mom to take me to the eye doctor. They said I probably had a detached retenia and needed to see a specialist right away or else I might loose vision in my eye forever. Fast forward a few weeks and we find out it's not only a detached retina, but I also used to have a very rare parasite in my eye that my body thought was still there (ocular toxicara) and was trying to destroy, which in turn was causing me to go half blind. Still on all of my medicine and haven't gotten eye surgery yet, but if I hadn't been taken to the eye doctor sooner, I might have even lost vision in both eyes

Weirdly, most parents aren't trained in psychology. So kids presenting with "stomach pains", or forgetting homework, or forgetting about projects, it doesn't even occur to them that said child is having problems doing this work, or getting bullied at school. In my opinion, that's a failure to educate would be parents about how kids describe their issues. But you cannot blame them for failing to read your mind, because last time I checked, telepathy and mind reading were regarded as bunk. Also, kids explain their issues in different terms, if they ever explain them at all (or their parents ever ASK them what's going on really? kind of thing). I used to try and figure out what was happening at school, with kid's friends etc. if one of my kids started wanting to be home all the time. I used to have one half day off a week, and invariably, trying to sleep in, the same kid would have teacher call and say come collect, she's not well. Every single week. For months. We sorted it out eventually, but parents get weary too and sometimes too busy to ask the right questions at the right time. You yourself probably took quite a while to figure out why you were forgetting something so "important". It's kind of unfair to expect God-like Omniscience from parents. They cannot know everything about you, despite giving birth and raising you. You're an individual with accompanying issues which can be totally unrelated to their parenting attempts. Time to grow up, and forgive your folks for being imperfect humans, don't you think?

There are so many parents out there that think being a parent entitles them to being worshiped and that their child is an object they own, and those parents can't be reasoned with no matter how well or how often the child tries to communicate, because some parents just don't care.

I used to work as a daycare provider. Time out is an effective teaching tool when you use it wisely. Time out is usually suggested as 1 minute per year age of he child. When certain craftier types of small children earned a time out to calm down, they would suddenly have to use the bathroom.
Okie dokie. You go right ahead little buddy. We will pause your time and when you're done you can finish up time out.
Often it would take two or 3 attempts of this carrying over into the next day or eating into other activities kids enjoyed before they'd knock it off. No anger, no frustration, no unfairness. Just these are the rules, these are the consequences, I'm here if you need me no matter what. While these methods were always discussed and agreed upon by parents beforehand I had two which initially became upset when their kid told them they spent "all day" in time out. They'd be more understanding when gently explained the situation xD and encouraged not to punish the child at home but just let the child have the time to figure it out on their own.
On the flip side, it was much easier to help inform a parent when a kid had an actual issue because they knew there was no benefit in lying to me, as I had never given them reason to not believe them if they told me they were unwell.
When my own kid started not to want to go to school because of bullying I believed them immediately. When after several very serious abuses, and very serious attempts to work with the school to fix the issue, I finally told them they were either going to fix the situation or I was going to pull my child out school. They first said they saw no reason to do so and I replied "Well of course you don't see a reason. Look at how far this has gone and how ineffective your zero tolerance bullying pledges have been."
I told them either they changed the classes the bully was in, b/c THEY were the one disrupting MY child and MY child was not changing their whole life to suit the bully, and make it very clear that the bully was never again to speak or be in the same vicinity as my child, because obviously the parents of the bully, the bully themselves nor the school were capable of controlling the abuse...
or I take her out and "seek further advice" with a lawyer. They listened, but we wound up moving the next year to a much better school at the first opportunity.
That bully kid had some major abusive red flags both displayed for themselves, and inflicted on my kid. I hope to god that kid got or gets what they need to be healthy and safe, and have healthy and safe relationships in the future b/c holy shit...

@@mel7906 oh okay, right I reread it and understood. I was only confused because the context of my comment was of parents simply not believing their children when they claim they are not feeling well, or simply too busy to even walk their children to the bathroom because they are too absorbed into whatever they are doing at the moment- like the story of the girl whose mother was too busy with working out some car transaction or whatever and completely ignored her daughter when she kept repeating to her that she wanted to puke. Then only payed attention when she finally, and inevitably, puked on the floor.
but yeah, I agree with you on that last bit. I don't understand where parents get this mentality of not believing or taking their children seriously when they have not encountered any situation that would make them think their children are dishonest. This happens so often and has even happened to me several times, it gave me massive trust issues and that what I think or feel inevitably doesn't matter, feelings that I'm still trying to overcome to this day

I was 18 (I have autism and I’m told I seem younger mentally and I really want to tell this story so shush!!) and my dad decided to finally buy a truck. I asked to go along and was pretty excited when he said yes.
We saw 2 trucks (3 technically) the first was a newer truck that was beat to shit, that a legitimate branded sales shop was willing to tell us all the problems. It was a list to say the least, but they were only charging 3k for it (which is still highway robbery, but still, listen.)
The second smelt fishy from the start. It was a back roads ‘dealership’ with like 6 vehicles on the premises. It was a 05 grey, looked pretty old, but omg what a deal, only 5k! (Third was on lot a newer truck in my favorite color, orange, that looked in better shape for 10k)
My dad’s chatting these people up like they’re his best friends, then I hear their ‘story’. That it was their teenage son’s truck but he ‘decided’ to switch to a ‘car’, and pointed to a boring, crappy beater in their yard.
Red flags all over the place. I took my dad to the side and told him in no uncertain terms that he should not get this truck. “Aww lol you just want the orange one.” I second guess myself from ptsd a lot, so I had to take a second til I said the obvious.
“Dad, there is no teenage guy in (oursmallstate) who would take a crappy beater car over a freaking truck. Something is wrong with this truck, don’t get it! Let’s get the broken one at the dealership! At least we know what’s wrong with it!” I thought he was listening to me, since we didn’t get it that day. He just said goodbyes to the owners (“oh by the way, we’re moving soon” definitely makes them that much more trustworthy, right?)
About a week later, my mom tells me he went to get the truck. I asked which truck. When she said grey, I blurted out “R U FUCKING KIDDING ME??” To which she told me to watch my language.
He expected a heroes welcome when he got back. He was all proud that he got a ‘warranty’ roped into the price and all, I just couldn’t hide it for once. I couldn’t put up a facade and I chewed him out, and after he sputtered bullshit for a bit, I told him I would absolutely tell him I told you so when this truck broke down.
Surprise, literally within the month, major repair was needed. And that ‘aMaZiNg WaRrAnTy!!!” Rejected any attempts to claim. I didn’t think to ‘claim my right’ there, but within another few months, another repair was needed, and I made sure to absolutely say this time “I. Told. You. So.”

Begged for six years for glasses. She always said I was exaggerating. In ninth grade she had eye insurance so she took me. She said and I quote "you're gonna be embarrassed when you don't need any" I started doubting myself.
What should you know? Legally blind with no glasses on. I am convinced the only reason I lived up to that point was because I knew where everything was by heart. She cried and said she was sorry, but that whole issue with my brother made her so cautious and I hadnever had a teacher say anything so she didn't think it was that bad. My teacher just improvised. For years I dealt with the worst pain in my head (I still do but I have closure now that I know what exactly it is). It started in fourth grade and my mom (who is a nurse) told me they were headaches and I needed to sleep more. Understandable, that’s a common side effect of sleep deprived children. In fifth grade, I brought them up again after they still didn’t go away, this time the answer was I needed to drink water and stay off of electronics (I didn’t even own a phone). So I drank more water. Years later in eighth grade, I told my mom I think I’m having migraines and she comes right out and says “no, you aren’t having migraines. That is the worst pain you could ever feel when it comes to headaches. You just need to drink more water.”
I was taken to the doctors in ninth grade and it turns out they were migraines and I’ve been out on a strict schedule of pain medication and sleep. My mom still doesn’t listen to me when health comes into play and the same thing has happened for years now with my other health issues (my back pain, my stomach aches, my anxiety). Looking back, my mom was always a little too focused on my sister (who had ADHD, depression, and anxiety) and my brother (who had depression and anxiety and couldn’t function on his own) to notice me, someone who didn’t have any mental health issues at the time. I still try not to contact her often though, because she was always a little emotionally abusive

Honestly, this was kind of the same for me. I have extremely severe OCD, autism (didn’t know until I was 15, 4 years later, I was 11 when I tried), anxiety and depression. When I was in younger grades, 2-5 I tended to come home angry and upset and they thought I was just being a moody kid. In reality, I spent my entire day listening to my OCD and trying to keep it together and not flip out at school that I didn’t have the energy left to keep it together at home. Honestly, if I hadn’t had a meltdown in grade 5 because my OCD was stressing me so much because a girl kept scratching her head every time she walked past my desk and had dandrift fall onto it and told my mom alllll about the stressful thoughts I’ve had, we may have never realized I had OCD. While my OCD was pretty goodly understood, it wasn’t fully understood how severe it was until I tried to hang myself to stop the thoughts and fear that came with having OCD my extremely severe OCD. I was then put into a sort of mental health centre(?). I stayed there for 3 months with several other girls, and while I hated it there thanks to the doctor and therapists there I was put onto medication that made my OCD easier, and made me not want to die anymore, so that was good.
So, moral of the story: kids don’t act up for no reason, and you should listen to them when they do. Who knows, maybe your moody, angry kid actually has a (or multiple) (maybe severe) mental illness.

I woke up and was feeling really sick. I asked my parents to keep me off school but they sent me on the school bus anyway. It was really bumpy, and to make a long story short, the entire bus was covered in pink sick, the windows and seats and everything. I was recently diagnosed with ADHD at age 35. Somehow I was able to scrape by in school and earn a degree and have a decent job. Sad part is, if my stupid parents had listened when the school told them I should see a psychiatrist, they did nothing about it. Granted, this was the mid 90's and there wasn't a lot of information available about ADHD especially how it presents in little girls. I figured out I probably had ADHD a couple years ago after watching a Netflix documentary and I advocated for myself and got tested. My point is, its never too late. Once you're older and are able to, go get a diagnosis right away. I am so sorry you're suffering. Best of luck to you.

I remember having 2 goldfish when I was younger. I named them Orangy and Browny based on there colours. Some time later, we went on some trip, leaving the goldfish at my dad's friend's house. My dad's friend bought plastic decorations to put in the tank but he forgot to sanitize it or something and basically it poisoned the water for goldfish. 2 days later, we come back home and Orangy is dead. Browny was acting weird and was seemingly trying to come out of the water. I told my mom and she said its fine(very annoyed) so just go to school. My dad was at work so I couldn't tell him and as my mom said, I was going to be late for school so I left.
    Browny died that day.

One day, I told my mom that I didn't feel well. She proceeded to drag me through Aldi for 2 HOURS! We had already planned a doctor's trip that day, and she insisted that we go to the store BEFORE the doctor's visit, because "It probably isn't that bad." After 2 hours of shopping, plus another hour of waiting in a stuffy doctor's office, plus all of the check-ups, she FINALLY mentioned that I wasn't feeling well. They decided to check me out, and I got a nose swab that confirmed that I was indeed sick.
