"its not like people approach people anymore" genuinely made me sob bc u literally can. nothing is stopping you. its the human connection that we're losing bc the apps make it so easy NOT to communicate with actual people. but you can literally strike up a conversation with someone completely random. social media has a tendency to make us feel people dont do it anymore, but MANY people do not completely live online still. theres so much more out there in the world than we think

It's kinda true though, I walked past like 10 people at a bus stop and they were all staring at their phones lol. So sad. I guess back in the day people used to read a book or newspaper instead if they wanted to be antisocial though. But I know a lot of people tend to just pull out their phone cos it's there and everybody else already has their nose in one so they feel weird not doing what everyone else is doing. I also kind of feel likepeople just wait for other people to make the first move, everyone is just waiting for someone else to make the move, and then often you just don't because you're thinking, oh they're busy or occupied with things on their phone, I won't annoy them. It's a vicious cycle.

I haven’t had social media since 2020. Yes, I lost a lot of “friends” because I wasn’t constantly online, but the friends I’m gaining now align more with my values because they also aren’t chronically online. Without social media, you do have to be more brave, sometimes be the first to make a move, actually socialize in person, and initiate hangouts instead of just send memes, but those in-person experiences are so much richer. I love not being online because then I actually have stuff to talk about when I meet up with friends since I haven’t seen anything they may have posted about their life online. Sorry, that was a lot. In conclusion:✨You’ll attract people similar to yourself and what you want in a friend if you stick to your values.✨

this is so very true, the feeling of not existing once you delete social media is a scary one. i deleted my accounts in march, went back for a day last week, to realize that this is something that i never want to do again, the way i felt was the same i felt in march. there has been highs and lows when it comes to craving connections, i'm still not used to not seeing my friends face every day, even if through a story photo. and the dating part hunts me as well. i live in a small town with a very small group of friends so even dating apps are not that helpful, and i guess i could benefit from social media when it comes to dating, however i feel like the relationship would start from such a shallow interaction, i crave the human connection, and getting to know someone in person as well, sooo it's something that i've been working on my mindset, i'm also in my 20s and so far have realized that people are getting farther and farther from reality when it comes to socializing. it's a sad thing, but i try to convince myself that if i'm meant to meet someone it will happen, and i try to believe that, but sometimes is just hard to leave it all and trust *destiny*

what we don't realize is that social media, though loud and domineering, is actually still the minority of people. not everyone is as chronically online as the algorithm may suggest. there's hope for people like us! we'll find each other!

i absolutely adore this video!! i truly think that everything in your life, romance, friendship, opportunities, etc., will align with your current way of living (chronically offline). I mean, it seems to make you very happy and i think going back to something that made you feel insecure or untrue to yourself just to have certain experiences is even more unauthentic. But obviously, opinions and views and feelings change so maybe in a 5 years or so you'll be at peace with how you're living and having social media will not affect that in any way. I truly look forward to seeing this journey. (also, you're really inspiring me to start a channel because being a TH-camr has been a dream of mine too!!)

thank you for your comment! i think you are very right. your life aligns with how you live it, and i think the best way to allow yourself to sit back and let that happen is gratitude and continuing to be authentic.

I'm on day three of no social media, and I'm honestly so happy. I was planning on deleting the apps for five days, but I've decided when I redownload the apps, I'm only using my work accounts (I run my own business and work as a digital media manager for a few companies). Business wise, I think social media is super helpful. Personally, I can't keep comparing myself to unrealistic beauty standards and this idea that I can do everything if I only buy this or look this or whatever. I loved this video so much, you are super inspiring, thank you for sharing!!!

I’ve been wanting to delete all my social media for years now, I’ve done it in the past for two years, I was so happy. I came across your videos a week ago and talked with my boyfriend and we both saw this as a sign to deactivate all of our social media apps and to delete the apps off of our phones & and we did.
Today is day 3 😊no social media. I’m nervous my friends will diminish, I have a few cause of having a chronic illness & I don’t work but I needed this. True friends will stay. Social media made me doom scroll. I needed a mental cleanse.

Hi Gillian! I can definitely relate to everything you said about worrying that you are hindering yourself by not having social media! I have been off of it for 2 years now and can often feel like I am limiting my success professionally and personally by not having it! However, I love watching videos like this and hearing from other people who also are in the same boat as me because it reminds me that I am not alone in my choice to delete social media from my life! There are others out there who are successful, have met their partners and friends all without Instagram, TikTok, Facebook etc. What is meant for you will find you. I love that you are choosing to be authentically you no matter what everyone else is doing! Love your channel!

I definitely relate to the fear of missing out on connections when being off of social media. This is one of the main reasons that I haven’t deleted it yet (I would feel bad about not seeing the memes/videos that my friends send me through the apps). Any advice there would be SO appreciated!
I will say though that I’ve met my closest and most cherished friends in person (high school/university/work) and I met my boyfriend through mutual friends as well! I’d say the those relationships come more infrequently then ones you may build online, but they’re so special and worth waiting for 🥰

    • @gillianelaird
      @gillianelaird  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

when i first deleted my socials i was in the HEIGHTS of my fangirl phase and was so concerned about missing out on every last detail about my fav lol but luckily i had amazing friends who literally screenshotted/recorded everything for me and texted it all to me. so there's always that lol.
and you are so right. the in person relationships that come infrequently are genuinely so worth it, hence the infrequency because they're a dime a dozen.

TH-cam is the only one I’m using. I got rid of TikTok months ago and instagram has been on and off for weeks. But two days ago I really thought to myself; Why do I need it? Do I really need it? What do I get out of it? What does it do for me? Etc.
Sure, there are benefits to have social media, but they aren’t beneficial for me.
But I’m not going to lie, meeting people and being social is harder without it, but that’s a price I’m willing to pay.
It’s lonely, but my mental health is more important.

I would edit my comment but I can't find it now hmmm. But I can't stop thinking about what you said about creating problems that are 5 minutes or 6 years away, and making them a problem now... trying to write that down in a quote friendly form, so I can open Notion and reread that and stop worrying about my future 24/7. I can't help myself and I think the same way, I get so carried away with what ifs that I hardly live for the nows.

I’m almost fully off social media. I only kept my bookstagram and pinterest. I honestly don’t miss it. Sometimes it feels isolating as far as meeting new people, but life is overall less stressful. Living in the moment has been kind of a nice feeling. I definitely “lost friends”, but did I really, because were they actually a friend if they can’t be bothered to reach out outside of said app?

I'm not currently off social media, but I was for much of 2023, and I met one of my greatest friends as well as my significant other in that time! I wasn't expecting it but I guess it's good to remember that people can pop into your life organically and quickly become very important to you, regardless if you're active on socials :) wishing you luck!!

  • @faesdays

Honestly I think most of the relationships that end up starting online are probably not ideal anyway and I’ve seen many fall apart. Organic real relationships take time to build from face to face interactions and conversations. Now in saying that my absolute best friends are online but we have met in person a few times spending a few days together, and we talk about our own issues, trauma, and everything lol, we talk all day every day basically. 😂 but even so… the relationships with them were still built up over years. Most of the kind of connections you’ll make from social media are probably going to just be extremely shallow anyway, so I really don’t think you have anything to worry about. If you are like you are in your videos, then you’re bubbly and fun and interesting and intelligent and I think you will have no problems finding friends or love when it is meant to happen.
