    The end result depends on a lot of variables. If you start out with sheets/clothing that haven’t been washed for several weeks for whatever reason, you’re going to get change in the water color. And you indeed will see dirty water.
    And it really is a good way to soak out all the dirt, if you ask me. I’ve done this. It works.
    That’s why you see videos that have it.
    I TRULY think YOUR clothes are already so clean, that there wasn’t anything to soak out of them! So good job for doing such a great job at your laundry! That’s fabulous !
    By the way my friend Dawn at “The Minimal Mom” just did this with one of her daughter’s sheet sets. They were dirty to begin with but they really came out nice.

    I always set my new dark colors with 1 cup white vinegar it will keep them from fading or bleeding. I have always washed dark and whites together no issues with hot water.

    Thank you for this video. The clothes stripping is such a myth and your video is the only one I found that is calling it out.
    Also soaking dirty clothes has been around for years, calling it stripping instead of soaking doesn't mean it's new lol

      If your not dealing with that kind of filth you can just use the same products in your washer and get your clothes just as clean.

    Well Tik Tok kinda hijacked the purpose of laundry stripping.
    I never saw people doing this with their actual clothes until Tik Tok.
    I’m telling y’all every time I clean my towels I use borax and let them sit for a while. I never use Tide on my towels. And the water will be cloudy and nasty as hellll
    You’re not supposed to use Tide when stripping your towels because the purpose of it is to remove all of the built up detergents/fabric softeners whatever, and it does work.
    You have to wash them twice in hot water. First just add 1 cup of vinegar and let them run thru the washer once. No fabric softener!!Second time add 1/2 cup of baking soda in hot water. Again, no softeners!! When you dry them don’t put any dryer sheets or anything but dryer balls and on medium heat. I swear it works.
    Your towels will be so absorbent and soft.
    Also, what in the world are you using to clean your towels??! Because for your dirty towels to be that clean is unbelievable. You must’ve used all of them just once lol

    I use only clear biodegradable laundry soap. I can make laundry soap from my home made castile bars but don’t use it in my front loader. 2 Tablespoons liquid only for a huge load is recommended. Repairmen tell us most people overdo it with detergent and it ruins clothes and washers. Also, give up the perceived need for suds. Women used to use one slice of lemon to wash a load. I knew something was wrong with the stripping videos when I saw the Tide. Never use it. Thanks for the reveal, sweetie. Here’s a tip, in case you don’t already know it: spas and bathtubs with jets need a periodic purge of the bio film coating the internal pipes. Look up a product called “Oh Yuk”. You’ll be surprised what come out.

    I've done laundry stripping for years. Mainly on things I can't fit into the washer. Like bags, hats, pillows, pack and plays and blankets and it really does work. The water gets so gross 🤢 idk bout stuff that gets washed frequently but on stuff you can't fit into the washer

  • @DoctorsSong
    @DoctorsSong 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Yeah darks bleed during laundry striping. Also, If you don't use fabric softener or too much detergent you don't need to do laundry striping (with the possible exception to work out clothes). When a person uses to much laundry detergent it transfers back onto the clothes and then attracts body oil and dirt back onto the clothing. Laundry striping removes that.
    Add: Using an Enzyme Cleaner on your active wear and Oxygen Bleach will help clean them better

    My hubby tends to be really oily. I have to keep a towel on the backs of all my upholstered furniture otherwise he'll leave a brown stain. I'll put his clean thermals away for the warm months and when they come back out in fall, I have to wash them over because they have this horrible "old man body odor" that's so bad, I need to wash them again before he can wear them. I believe that it all depends on how good of a detergent you use to begin with and how much body oil your family members produce. I won't use liquid detergents because that's half of the muck. They just don't work as good a the higher priced powders. And my washer doesn't stink anymore since I switched to powders.

  • @kathrinegravesen
    @kathrinegravesen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I think that what you are saying is true, but also it is in a lot of cases actually kind of good to do laundry stripping with dark colours. If you wash your clothes a lot the dye will also eventually fade away, this is because there is some much “extra” dye in our coloured clothes, which is also why something your skin can turn kind of blue or black if you wear new pants that’s only been washed a few times😊

    I honestly think people overdo this trend. It's worked for me with a couple clothing items that I accidentally left in a gym bag and the trunk of my car for a month in the summer. I washed it multiple times and nothing seems to get the smell out but I did the laundry stripping and it seemed to work. But I don't think that people need to do it to every single clothing item and towel set they own

  • @faustocrapiz136

    Good video! I think for most people, stripping clothes is probably a waste of time and people interpret the leeched dye as dirt. However, i work construction and trail run. Stripping my fancy running/work socks was a fantastic experience. I seriously didn't realize how crunchy they had become from years of mud and dust getting ground into them. They went from being flat to being much fluffier as well.

  • @MsMusiclover48
    @MsMusiclover48 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Truth be told, I think laundry stripping is more for items that are difficult to wash or that you don't wash all that often. Take rugs for example. unless they are the small bath rugs, it's hard to wash and clean them unless you shell out money for a pro. So, stripping rugs make more sense and explains why the water turns dirty when compared to towels. Other items to strip would be hats, bras, seat cushions, maybe even clothing that you sweat a lot in, but I don't think it's meant for every day clothing that gets washed regularly.

  • @borountree4539
    @borountree4539 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Do you have hard water? Do you have oily skin and hair? And you obviously have access to your own washer and do not have to rely on a laundromat. I can assure you laundry stripping does work if your laundry needs it but if you do not have the conditions that set your laundry up to need to be stripped in the first place, of course it will not appear to work for you.
    Edit: I would like to add that I think some of the videos out there that use a lot of extra ingredients to strip laundry are rediculous. When you start adding acids and bases you are just canceling them out and wasting products. It can also be dangerous to mix a lot of things as you can create some very toxic compounds. And adding a lot of extra soaps is just counter productive to what you are trying to accomplish in the first place.

    when I spilled diesel fuel on my clothes, I soaked them in the tube with baking soda, vinegar lil bit of ammonia in hot water. after washing them they smelled better than ever. I did that soak with all my work clothes bc I sweat a lot when I’m at work. There’s a lot of factors that go into if your laundry needs stripping.
      Basically what happens is liquid detergent builds up on fibers over a long period of time causing that dingy look. Hard water [edit: and sweat/oils] will also cause more build up. That’s why you see those dramatic videos of people doing super old undershirts and etc. It’s had the time and sweat factor.
      The most basic stripping recipe is washing soda (the soap) + sodium percarbonate (aka oxyclean in the US = the “bleach” + bubbles) in very hot water. After soaking, you wash it, no soap added (it’s already been soaking and full of soap).
      -edit-
      The MOST basic method is actually boiling an item in water with sodium percarbonate solution (+ a no soap cycle).
      It’s how you’d get kitchen towels or rags clean and white. But not practical for large items like a bath towel, full load of laundry, or materials that could shrink.

  • @rebeccagilstrap3507
    @rebeccagilstrap3507 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I wish that you had stirred up the towels. The way detergent was made it requires you to agitate the laundry because one molecule sticks to the dirt and one end hangs free. It was made so the movement will pull the dirt out. Try that and see if there’s a difference. They aren’t meant to just soak.

  • @stormyserenity79

    I used to do stripping regularly when I was using a top loading washer and store bought detergents. I had to switch to homemade detergent because of my daughter’s skin sensitivities. I made a batch every 6-8 months in a 5 gallon bucket with a lid. The homemade detergent is biz powder (enzyme laundry booster), borax, washing soda, scent beads for smell, and shredded zote soap or fels naptha. It took 2 tablespoons per big load. Stripping takes away the residues from commercial detergents that ARE THERE if you use the recommended amount or have a washer that doesn’t rinse well, or have hard water, etc. If you use a detergent that has any of these ingredients to prevent residue and/or have a very efficient washer, “stripping” doesn’t work because there’s nothing to strip. When I started using the homemade detergent, I never had to use hot water unless it was for sanitizing purposes. Our clothes were brighter and cleaner and my husband’s pit stains even faded and disappeared with every subsequent wash. This was with a family of 6 (4 teenagers working in fast food) and 5 dogs. I HIGHLY recommend it. No tub soup if it’s being done with every wash.

    I've done it with all my towels for the bathroom and kitchen. It definitely didn't make them fluffier or softer but I did find that the dish clothes and tea towels were better at wiping up liquids. Before it would just move it around before soaking it up.

    • @aj7058

      What's it doing there is stripping your towels of fabric softener build up, if you avoid adding softener to towel washes your dish cloths won't lose their absorbency so much. It's like doing a clarifying shampoo to get product out of your hair.

    If you don't have hard water stripping will not yield the same results as you've seen from some others. I used to cloth diaper and we had to strip the diapers often to remove the mineral deposits and detergent build up from the water (they contribute to lessening absorption) adding one ingredient you didn't use which is calgon water softener. So I can't agree on the fake news part but I am always fascinated to see what people's water looks like afterwards lol

      The water we have here is hard water. With my oldest, we did cloth diapers for awhile before we switched to regular diapers. Our advantage was we have a spray next to the toilet, it's kind of like bidet toilet but, separate (not sure how to explain it). However, the spray is strong and that was what did the trick for us, on top of soaking and then throwing it in a 2 hour wash cycle they always came out white. I am not sure if it was the method we did combined with our machine, Idk. Yes, you are right the videos are fascinating.

      I agree I used clean clothes and diapers and I definitely could tell the difference. I am very lazy by nature so I won’t add more work on myself if it was not doing something. I don’t do it often mostly just diapers. We have well water with minerals and it is super hard. The Calgon is important too. Plus you need a bleach soak and like 3 washes in machine to finish stripping. Stripping came up with diapers and people started doing laundry so you should follow same protocol with the laundry because that is how I do it for results.

    Part of it may depend on your water to begin with because let’s face it some water types inhibit the machine and detergents ability to effectively clean the clothes. I know that when I wash as I have washed clothes that I’ve noticed my laundry water during the wash cycle is disgustingly brown. Will it hurt to do a strip once or twice a year? No. If you have hard water it might really be a benefit to your laundry.

I strip my diapers, active wear, pillow cases and towels and I can say yes fake news for the method they told you but my method you can see the crap come out and the water isnt white anymore it's off white and the oil comes to the surface like an oil spill. You can use dawn or like I do is biokleen dish soap..I also dont use tide at all I use dropps laundry detergent.

      I fill the tub up with warm to hot water. Add 1.5 cups of borax and 1 dropps pod or whatever 1 load amount of detergant, 2 tbsp of dawn.
      I add my clothes and I swish them around every 45 mins for maybe 2 hours. I make sure all that stuff I added is melted into the water and add my clothes (you can use a cooking utensil from your kitchen to stir and move the clothes around which is what I do)
      After that I ring them out and throw them into the washer and do a 2 rinse cycle with detergant. We also use odoban from time to time to make them smell good. After that dry like normal. Then toss in the dryer with wool balls and our lavender sachet.

      When stripping whites you use calgon, washing soda and borax. After soaking do a rinse with just water and then do a 30 minute bleach soak with a couple tablespoons of bleach and then wash a couple times after. They look great after.

  • @Areum.
    @Areum. 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well scientifically laundry stripping is just realizing the oils and dirt built up from the fabric softener, fabric softener is made of waxy chemicals in order to make clothes feel soft to the touch so naturally dirt will cling to it no matter how much you clean. It’s not the dye it’s dirt that is built up and not removed because of the softener. This won’t work if you don’t use softener on certain things.

    you've saved me so much time!! i was gearing up to do like all of my towels and sheets - i came to youtube to find a tutorial - and now i have so much more time today hahaha.
    i bet the reason many people love their results - especially from towels and whatnot - is because they're using their washer incorrectly. eg sooo many people overload their machines, or use too much/too little laundry detergent, or use a really ineffective one, or use fabric softener, or some combination! cleaning off that buildup would absolutely make towels softer and more absorbent. nothing like cleaning clothes to make them, like, clean lol

    • @anointedcountrygirl
      @anointedcountrygirl 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly, just add the washing soda and borax to your laundry and help the soap do its job, which also means you don't need to use as much soap.

    • @NaimahAltidore
      @NaimahAltidore  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The point of laundry stripping is to strip your clothes whether clean or dirty.
      In the video as shown, I first tried it with clean white towels, then dirty white towels just to compare the two. As you saw the color changed slightly with only the dirty towels and not the clean. My guess is because the towels were dirty to start with. Also, everyone may experience something different, that is why you must try it out for yourself. Towards the end, I said it did not work for me, maybe it'll work for you.

  • @rubyredinfinite9949
    @rubyredinfinite9949 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why is nobody saying this: Most peoples' clothes come out dirty water after the stripping because they don't wash their clothes properly. there are a mutlitude of reasons. People are saving money when it comes to water bills and use almost only cold washes, which doesn't properly wash away soap and bacteria especially for towels and bedsheets. This is why every 2 months you should do at least one empty hot water cycle to clean the washing machine of any bacteria building up. There are also those who are known to wash shoes in the washing machine or (sports' ) clothes with sand and dirt not prewashed before putting in the washing machine (like childrens' clothing). Which means the washing machine often gets so dirty and it can't clean properly. Ahuge sign of a dirty washing machine is that the clothes and the machine have a moldy dull smell instead of fresh. Clean your washing machine and service it 2 to 3 times a year. You can diy with baking soda or buy products for that. Other then that....Allot of people try to disguise the dull smelling clothes from an unclean washing machine with extra soap and extra softer which the cold wash cycles often can't wash out properly creating a build up of unwashed soap in clothes. This can also happen if you put too many clothes in one cycle. A washing machine should never be full full. You need at least about 1/5 -1/4 of space left. Also empty the drainage thingy at the bottom and clean the rubber by the door at least once a year.
    As a student I have lived in several dormes with different people and I have shared laundry facilities. I have seen some shocking laundry doing behaviour. People don't read instructions on machine maintanance, man.....They don't know how to use the machine. Let's not even get started about dishwashers. You know that typical smell a dishwasher washed plate or cup gets? A slight muffled soapiness machineness smell I don't know how to describe it but you instantly recognise it when you drink from a cup or glass that been washed in the dishwasher. Yeah that smell...THAT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN!!! Your dishes need to be rinsed off of food remains and sauce residue before putting in the dishwasher.
    Ooh I'm so triggered right now thinking about some shit that went down. This bitch had jumbo shrimp shells in a collander and put it in the dishwasher. Like bitch HOW???
    Anyways...
    This youtuber washed towels on a long and hot water cycle. And she used the washing machine properly not filling and stuffing it up and shit. Her towels came out whiter then white and thus....Yeah her shit be clean. Stripping has no extra function.

    I don't think you're wrong, but I don't think you quite get what laundry stripping is for either. There's a lot of things that "laundry stripping" clothes could be beneficial for and that depends on how old clothes are, how well your washer can actually clean your clothes, the kind of stains/dirt on on the clothes themselves. I'll give you a really good example, I used to have super soiled oily clothes from working in a car shop, there's no way a single wash would get a small load of clothes clean from that batch of clothes. I could see how laundry stripping could pull up the dirt and especially the oil and grease from those clothes. If your clothes are already pretty clean and new, you're probably not going to get a lot of results (besides pulling dyes out of dark clothes).

    Io penso che quando la biancheria viene lavata correttamente,il laundry stripping non è necessario,semplicemente la biancheria,soprattutto quella molto chiara o bianca la si deve lavare dai 60 gradi in su,con un semplice prelavaggio o ammollo,aggiungendo uno sbiancante tipo Vanish,cosi da evitare questo che secondo me,è uno spreco di tempo e danaro.
