Skinty Fia is the third studio album by Irish rock band Fontaines D.C. It was released on 22 April 2022 via Partisan Records. Like the band's two previous albums - 2019's Dogrel and 2020's A Hero's Death - Skinty Fia was produced by Dan Carey. Its title refers to an old Irish saying that drummer Tom Coll’s great-aunt used to say. The phrase "Skinty Fia" translates to "the damnation of the deer". Both the title and the cover art allude to the extinct Irish elk, also known as the "giant deer". Skinty Fia became the band's first number-one album in both Ireland and the UK.
Convinced 'I Love You' is one of the greatest songs ever. It leaves me in awe every single time I hear it
Cannot stop listening to it, so powerful
Goosebumps every time without fail
Facts
Yes
That and Nabakov are just blow-you-away type songs imo.
The 1st track was inspired by the story around my mums headstone. ❤
Hello Caroline! I am just reading the story on the BBC website.
Our condolences to your family 🇮🇪 ❤ Just read you won the appeal.
Just read an article from the BBC written in 2020. This sounds horrible and you should be entitled to put whatever you want on your own mother’s tombstone. My condolences go to you all
Yup, remember reading about it in the Irish Post. Condolences.
I got this phrase tattooed on me for my very first tattoo recently. My Grandparents also emigrated from Dublin to Coventry so it resonated with me deeply.
@@pingpong1421as ridiculous as an Irish person getting a tattoo in Mandarin. 😂
Honestly, they should've won a Grammy for this album. Minimum. Spectacular. Nothing else like it out there. They're in a league of their own.
Hey Emilia! Totally agree. I have been listening to this album since we did this first listen. It’s fantastic
As an Irish person this was a pleasant surprise to see you cover this band, I wasn't sure if they were well known outside of the uk but hopefully this will spread awareness of them even more
They got on my radar 2 years ago with televised mind and i was anticipating this album for several months before release. Didn’t disappoint at all.
How are tings cuz
Dude, they're amazing, i'm from Chile and i really want to see them live, i hope one day they do a tour to South America
Irish here too, every time I've seen these live they have been absolutely incredible, well worth it if they ever come by anyone
People in Brazil are listening!!!
As an Irish younger generation, this album hits home
Especially "I Love You" resonates so much with the younger generation, who have been forgotten in the path of our aged government, who only want to line their own pockets.
The thing with skinty fia is it feels almost too cool for me to listen to. I feel like an intruder, like I walked into the wrong venue by mistake but stayed because it sounded so good. It's really just so, so good.
Exactly!
Nicely said man
My favourite line in the album is "about the gall of Fine Gael and the fail of Fianna Fáil". Beautiful wordplay. Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil are the two leading political parties in the Republic of Ireland. Both are centre-right parties.
What does being centre-right have to do with it? They are the dominate parties for a reason. They were the parties that pioneered the protection of the Irish language and culture. They were both originally apart of the political party Sinn Féin that won Ireland's freedom. And these parties started as socalist parties that were meant to uplift the lower working class, and disempower the rich.
In the past 60 years, Fianna Fail has become more and more corporatist, and overzealously catholic. Since the troubles they have fumbled the ball and are causing more problems than they solved. Thats what I think the lyrics are talking about.
@@shuheihisagi6689 Great comment!
Yes I didn't mean anything by it, I always just highlight this to people from two-party countries such as the USA because a lot of people don't understand it's not always left v right, didn't mean anything more than that.
Centre-right according to what? They've created a social welfare state run by an oligopoly of property owners reminiscent of the days of English lords. They'd be socialist in the US, where they are on the scale of left vs right is irrelevant, it's their greed that's the issue. Celtic Tiger trash. But yeah, superb wordplay!
I agree although my favourite line is ‘is their mammy Fine Gael and is there daddy Fianna Fáil’ as that’s the situation I grew up in and it caused more problems than you would expect, especially living in the north of Ireland.
@@pamphletthebeanwolf5901second time around it’s “gall of Fine Gael and the fail of Fianna Fáil”
Your dad would really like Bloc party especially their first album. the drummer is sublime
Top 10 greatest debut rock album of all time
yep silent alarm , is up there as my favourite Bloc Party album , good call "ben stag"
Is silent alarm their first one?
@@benherbert3635 yep it is
Foals another fantastic drummer but different sound to bloc party
Best album this year, was waiting for this ever since I saw it in the background
Agreed.
Nice 1, I love this album, so does an album cover in the background give us a heads up of what's coming.?
@@whataboutme7174 sometimes, its just albums they like so usually if its there and hasnt been done in a video yet, its on the way
@@patch9717 Thanks, I was eyeing the Kurt Vile album👍
@@patch9717 ive been waiting for hellfire so long, ive seen it in the background for like half a year now lol.
I have never clicked a video so fast

Hahaha Same
Amo troppo io
Took me a few weeks
Roman Holiday was my most listened to song this past year; It just scratches that itch perfectly in every way. So excited to see them and AM next October :)
Same!
Same! BABY C'MON WHOSE SIDE ARE YOU ON
Same here!
Perfect driving song, I play it over and over
This song just has that energy of "fuck everything and everyone, i just need to drive" and all am for it . Definitely a new favorite for me
I went to school with the drummer and bass player. They're good guys and glad to see them being listened to across the pond! Keep it up you two! :)
thank you!
Shit, me too! It was so weird to see them getting so big at the beginning, really happy for them.
I'm Mexican but in a way I've always found out similarities between the struggles or the "meaning" of being Mexican and Irish. But in this album I found it very tangible with the trials and tribulations of living in the country that has a lot of responsibility of the situation in your country. Love this album
"I love you" is definitely my song of the year. It's a masterpiece
I guess I’m going to bed 33 minutes later than I planned tonight.
Roman holiday is my song of the year.
Watched this band two times this year, and gotta tell you the feelings and the intensity you felt in the album grows exponentially hearing them live. Grian's performance in the long verse of I Love You gives you increasing goosebumps with each line, and his body language adds up to a heart wrenching experience. Also seeing Kevin relates to the conceptual side of this album bringing up the story about his Irish friend, is exactly what this album is about, the people that needs to leave Ireland for the terrible conditions and feel uncomfortable in another country like the deer on the cover. I love the album, I love the band and also love this channel for creating such unique listening experiences.
One of the best live experiences for me, Grian just oozes confidence and swagger- so much passion
saw them at leeds fest and in manchester. he’s one of the best front man and he doesn’t even have to speak to the crowd. unbelievable energy.
Nabokov is the best song ever ever ever so glad you guys did this album
Vocal reminds me early Oasis
@@olbrue you could say that. I think the vocals are elongated and dragged out to show the emotion grian has behind the lyrics. How he gave his all. Such a beautiful song. I think the way it’s delivered is essential to being that.
@@ewanmckerney6131 I always imagine Grian singing with his mouth wide open. alot of it is melodic shouting
I love Fontaines D.C, I had the privilege of seeing them in 2019 at a small event for just 50 people and free in Mexico City when they were not yet known and they had released their first album Dogrel, one of the most memorable moments of my life, and that same year they exploded appearing at several big events, definitely great talent and music.
This is definitely one of my top five favorite albums! They're excellent live as well
You guys should listen to their album Dogrel from 2019, if you want more spoken word and the Dublin accent you'll get it from there. A brilliant album with some great lyrics. Shout out to the Yard Act album in the background btw, I'd love to hear your reactions to that one too
This episode was deadly. Loved the chat about the old friends that stayed. It's such an Irish thing to start chatting about a memory that is sparked by music or a line and it's mad to think that Fontaines music does that to people in Canada.
Also "There's always fucking rain and it's alway dark" is the hardest line on the album.
Being from Ireland it’s so cool to hear these stories from your dad and his love for this music and culture. Really really interesting stories love how music can convey such memories and thoughts
Man I love Fontaines DC, they're amazing live!! Saw them at Electric Picnic with Arctic Monkeys and Tame Impala :) Makes me even more proud to be Irish!!
I Love You is one of my favourite songs at the moment, just a massively powerful song
Also got The Cure vibes from this album especially that song, glad they thought the same thing!
Absolutely. I love belting out the lyrics, it's so raw and powerful
Would love to see you guys do a rundown of your top albums of 2022! I can’t decide between this and Ants From Up There for my number 1 spot
Im Irish and its super interesting hearing your dads stories with the lads from Ireland and N Ireland, love Fontaines D.C. too. Great video!
As a Northern Irish man who moved to Canada I loved the discussion in between the songs on this. Fontaines might be the best Irish band ever for my money
Hey Sean! Were in Canada are you ?
seeing them and the monkeys next september, seriously cannot wait! this is one of my top albums of this year without a doubt
Can’t believe anyone got tickets to AM 😭
saw them in july, it was SO good you’re gonna love it
Stumbled across them at glastonbury last year. I love you and roman holiday😮😮😮😮😮
Do Bon Iver's "For Emma, Forever Ago"!
Curious how your dad will like the soft acoustic intimate sound as opposed to the more robotic feel of 22, A Million. He mentioned in that video that he found Justin Vernons raw vocals powerful, and that album essentially rests on his vocals and guitar.
Yes. And yes to the Yard Act album in the background.
Being from dublin myself i clicked on this so fast and had such a great time just watching yous experience it glad yous enjoyed probably my favourite episode so far now gerrrup lads
Is your mammy finna gael and is your daddy fianna fail???
Love the whole album to death, but The Couple Across the Way in particular is one of my fav songs. Makes me weep everytime I hear the final few lines.
Incredible song. One of my favorites of theirs as well.
Wow this is crazy didn’t expect this at all went to see them in Dublin last July and they were amazing
This album and this band have been a revelation for me this year. Best stuff I've heard in a while
Me too.
Very convoluted way I got in to them.
I was aware of the name but never heard them.
My team bought a player from Bohs, so looked at that team.
Saw and bought that beauty from a year or so ago with the bands name emblazoned on the front, so delved in and absolutely loved what I heard.
Bought rhe back catalogue, caught them on the Glasto coverage and got tickets for one of their Manchester shows earlier this year.
Absolutely astonishing band.
My favourite new band for a while.
Just wish I'd looked them up earlier.
In retrospect, their debut album is one of the finest I've heard for ages, really set the tone for what they've rapidly become.
A very important band.
I was lucky enough to get to see them live here in the states! They were on tour with the Arctic Monkeys last year when they came to Portland! An absolutely magic night for both!
Y'all gotta go back to Dogrel, my GOD what an album. I saw them open with that album for IDLES' Joy as an Act of Resistance tour. Best concert of my life.
Bloomsday is the day James Joyce's Ulysses is celebrated in Ireland. People follow the route taken round Dublin along the route taken by main character Leopold Bloom.
Thx I didn’t know th😢
Saw this in the background of a video a while back been waiting for it for ages! Love this band and my favourite album from this year, they’re also amazing live!
honestly best rock album i’ve heard in a long time
Loved that little story of the Irish blokes
That story after the second song is really touching, having grown up around the same time as Conor it makes me so sad to know that people were segregated so hard by their religion and still are to this day in the North,
Love this album so much - so glad you guys have reacted to it!!
Once again thank you for showing me an album that I didn’t know I needed!! You two are everything 💜😂
Oh yes!! I saw this vinyl on your wall long time ago and always thought you have listened to it off camera. So glad you reacted to it
As someone from Dublin I'm so happy to see fontaines being covered and reviewed by you guys across the way, also a great first introduction to your channel, will definitely be checking more of you guys out you both seem great!
Great album from one of the best bands of the last few years. When are you gonna do that yard act album sitting on the shelf behind?
Thank you for your videos! It's really becoming my favorite content on the platform and a great way to discover new albums.
Btw, I believe Big Thief would be a nice discovery for Kevin!
I’ve seen them live twice now , the energy at their gigs is something I haven’t felt in along long time
Jackie down the line was one of my top songs this year, but I haven't heard the rest of the album so it was nice listening along with yall 🤘
Just discovered this album via Spotify in “songs you missed in 2022”, I am forever grateful
GYUPP THE CUZ IRELAND ALL THE WAY 🇮🇪
Always loved a heroes death and dogrel but I haven’t given this a proper listen yet. I love how he sings with his accent. It’s genuinely so cool to see Irish culture being recognised. Especially liked the first track being written in Gaelic
Irish, not Gaelic
@@seanodonoghue116 are you thick in the skull lad. There are other forms of gaeilge that aren’t Scottish. Irish is almost always referred to as gaeilge. I mean why do you think Irish speaking areas are called gaeltachts?
@@seanodonoghue116 sorry I’m in the field working and tired asf. I’m a bit on edge 😂 I’m studying for my cbas atm and I can’t get “aimsir chaite” and “higher level gaeilge” out of my head 😂.

@@fettywapsmissingeye oh no problem at all, didn’t mean for it to be aggressive in any way. Good luck with the study!
I saw this record on your shelf ages ago and i was hoping you review it! Why ty for giving attention to this amazing band
very underrated album, glad to see you branching out to more genres too! cool seeing the kurt vile vinyl too been getting into him recently and would love to see you do him at some point
Brilliant, loved it. Sitting here listening in Ireland. Saw fontaines wed night, amazing gig. Hope you get to see them soon
I'm from Dublin Love this band so much that they were formed in Dublin. Deego and Tom are from Co. Mayo. Curleys from Co Monaghan (coolest looking man in rock) Grian and Carlos are Dubs. Carlos has lived in Spain when younger
Great review, I discovered this band during the the pandemic and have been lucky enough to see them live twice since. They’re soooo good live!
Gotta see these guys live before they undoubtedly end up filling arenas because I prefer smaller, more intimate venues. Excited to catch them next year. Oasis reunion, Fontaines DC, Morrissey, Marr, Chameleons and hopefully more. Thank for the reaction!,
this is absolutely precious, wish i could do this with my dad
Me too. Their relationship is so endearing to see.
Thank you for opening this band to me! Stumbled upon your Radiohead reactions and became a follower. Can't get enough of this album, not a single song to skip, everything is in it's right place 😌
Thx Helga ❤
Skinty Fia has two meanings. One refers, via a literal translation, to the extinction of the Irish deer; the other acts as the Irish-language equivalent of “for fuck's sake”
Did not expect this and I'm absolutely here for it. Been pumping the record on repeat ever since release
So happy to see the Yard Act vinyl in the background. Y’all are so very based
Best album of 2022, I was really lucky to have this vinyl signed by all the band members in the San Diego gig, awesome video I was really looking forward for this reaction!
Omg, I love this band. I almost cried seeing someone reacted to it. Just discovered you today, that's a subscription from me :)
absolutely love this album, hats off to you guys👏🏻
So proud to be from Dublin watching this, saw them at electric picnic and vicar street last week, they are unreal live
Great reaction to an underrated album. Checking your channel to see if you've reacted to Grian's solo album. If not you totally should. It's brilliant!
From Belfast and love this album and you guys, thanks for the stories and continued amazing videos
❤
I’m from Ireland and lived in the uk and this album really hit for me. There’s still a lot of distrust in the uk with irish people because of the past especially in places affected by ira bombings.
Man this makes me so happy to see. Such a solid album.
Didn’t expect this to be covered, love this album so much! Super underrated in the music nerd scene I reckon
been waiting for this one!
Saw them last week, opening track opens the show perfectly! Then finishing with I love you! Sensational band
This is one of my favorite albums of all time -- I just found y'all's channel today and I'm so happy you've covered it!
saw fontaines the other week. one of the greatest bands of this generation. i love you is an amazing song. the feeling it gives and the passion is indescribable
I went to Artic Monkeys concert and they were the opener and I was VERY surprised by how good they were, I’d love to go to one of their shows
YES, IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE
I saw these guys live the other week. So good!
Best album of 2022, what a belter, reminds me of Joy Division, Smiths, Roses, early Oasis..
So nice to see this album land on the channel, ‘I love you’ live in the iveagh gardens in Dublin last summer was something else. Continue to dive into there music lads and thank you for your story’s Kevin it’s clear the music struck some memories
Yesss damn so happy you're doing this. One of my favourite new bands along with black country new road. They're so Irish. I love the feeling of their music. The poetry, everything. I don't belong from their previous album is probably my favourite song I discovered last year
Saw them November at Apollo Hammersmith, unfortunately upstairs 🙁 but from teen to pensioner e v e r y o n e
knew the words and sang along you could hear the swell of voices in quieter moments can't get enough of them ❤️🔥
Every album these guys get better and better and this one delivers front to back. The second album is when I got into them then worked back. Hope you also check at least “A Hero’s Death”.
Saw them live last week and they were just incredible!!
I've seen them live and met them a few times and they were hands down the best gigs I've ever been to. After working for their gig the first time it was so good I had to buy tickets to go see them again. Album of the year 2022 for surre
I’m going to see them on Tuesday and can’t wait! Thank you for this.
Thanks for doing this Connor and Kev. I’m no where near Dublin City being from rural cork, but Fontaines are pure unreal. First heard about then when I was around ten from boys in the better land being a big hit here. I’m a tad older now and they’re a band I’ll always have a great time listening to. I think ye should listen to the makaveli album next. Class album
realest guys ever for the hellfire/afut background combo, and yard act into the mix! this one too, what an amazing album.
Got to give Dogrel a listen now lads!
Loved this!!! Id really love to see some more albums from this current wave of rock - (Black Midi, Viagra Boys, Courting, Idles, Squid etc)
Hey, I'm northern Irish and my mum also went on the Ulster project. All she has is fond memories, great video!
HELL YEAH one of my favourite bands, even better live - so cool you reacted to these guys
I'm happy to see you covered this album, I saw you had the vinyl on the wall for a couple videos and I was wondering when would you share your impressions about it. Personally, I think it's the best album of the year and Roman Holiday is my favourite song, love the video
So great to see you covering probably Ireland's best band right now. The scene pretty much died over the years, and though there are a few bands around that aren't getting the recognition they deserve, these guys are blowing up. Never thought they'd get on this show though. Appreciate it!
loved this
See these in London last weekend! Was incredible 🤩🎸
being from belfast it's so interesting hearing the wee stories about the lads from here that stayed with yous
Had the pleasure of seeing Fontaines live this year. Highly recommend!
Seen these guys, the Fontaines several times now, they've played in my local pub in Stoke Newington, north London various times. Great sounds...
