      The embossed label was a dead giveaway. My grandfather used to use them when I was a kid, lol. As soon as I saw that I new those pins have been there for a while.

      @@powderdescent The pins and even tools can be bought on Amazon, but I had old cylinders from the previous locks I replaced. I didn’t need to buy the pin key set on Amazon, but it’s there. Changing 16 new locks to a rekey pin order indeed costs nothing.

    So cool no special tools and old pins from old locks. Great video! Very impressive, short and sweet. So, I just did this as I
    Moved into a home with 18 locks and I don’t want to carry 18 keys. All of them were Schlage type, master also worked with one key before but I upgraded the overall door lock to digital entry, fob and key locks Schlage type key. Since all of them had used one key before. I took out the pins from the old locks and put those pins in a different order to the new cylinders. So that one key still worked across all of them. Thus, I did it just like this video without having to buy anything and with the few locks that were not previously on one key I used a dremel like he explained to make a bigger pin fit. This project was much fun, like a puzzle, after I did it. 💪. Thank you 🙏 so much. I have doggie bags and used that plastic roll inside to use as follow through tool, so I would retain the springs, but when some springs and top pins came out, because of this video I was able to reinsert without feeling like I totally screwed it up, as I knew I could do it with the knowledge from this video.

    If you can find a piece of tubing or the smooth end of a drill bit (the part that goes into the drill chuck) that's exactly the same diameter as the plug, you can push out the plug so the driver pins and springs don't fall out. It'll save you a lot of work.

    Great video for no special tools but I highly recommend using something (drill bit, sharpie/marker, socket, wood dowel, battery, or whatever appropriate size cylindrical object you have) as a plug follower. It makes the job soooo much easier and you avoid losing the top pins and springs during the reinstallation when they inevitably slip from under your screwdriver. Losing just one spring or top pin will turn a pleasant, simple, and short I can do that myself task into an extended nightmare that'll make you wish you never took on doing the task yourself.

    Thank you so much for taking the time to do this video. I consider myself very handy but you helped me decide that this is not something I want to attempt and it’s just easier for me to delegate this to a locksmith. And hey, I think of it as helping the economy. However, why don’t the locks already just have those anti-pick pins in there?

    The famous home depot bumpers. You should also drill some big nails or screws into hinge side of door into frame and have 1/2" protrude into doors with drilled holes. Keeps one from pulling hinge pins, the hinges try to protect that but don't.

    Trying my first one now as an experiment…if you want to pull your hair out, get a Hyper tough Walmart deadbolt. The blade doesn’t come off the back of the cylinder (it’s crimped on as it’s cheaper) so it’s in the tube WITH your flat screwdriver as you manipulate the pins into the spring holes. 😂😂😂. You definitely get what you pay for.

    Would this be the same procedure for the schlage keypad deadbolts.
    I can rekey auto door locks and after watching your video seems home deadbolts are easier because the spring and tumblers are larger.
    My question is would this be the same procedure for a schlage keypad deadbolt or rather are keypad deadbolts designed the dame . Thanks for the informative video.

    Good detailed video. Why not buy a re-key kit for Kwikset type with a plug follower so you don't have to deal with the top pins or springs. I can envision less capable people getting into trouble trying to get the springs and top pins back in. (that includes myself)

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Alameda Repair Shop I mentioned a follower in the video, and the kits shown in the video description area have them. I like to show ways without using specially designed tools because a person may have pins from an old lock laying around, but nothing else. Thanks for watching!

  • @HobbyOrganist
    @HobbyOrganist ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm curious why you didnt use a core follower???
    You shouldnt NEED to remove the upper pins and springs, they are held in place ith a core follower, I used a wood dowel that happened to be the same diameter as the core and pushed it thru as I pulled the core out and replaced the bottom pins and re-inserted it.
    Some locks you CANT remove the top pin holder to insert the top pins and springs that way, but tediously trying to work all the springs and top pins back in is make-work.
    The only time you should need to do it the way shown is if you fumble and drop the core or the like and everything falls out.

    interesting as always but how did you change the pins in the tumbler, you went from i will change them to they are changed.

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the video I showed how it worked, how the varying pin sizes create a shear line when the key is inserted. I then explained that I needed to replace the pins so when the new key is inserted(which has different depths of cuts), everything will be flush with the plug(cylinder). By trial and error with the new key inserted, I tried different pins off camera. You saw the end result after spending a few minutes searching for the correct sizes. Thanks for watching!

    • @MrRobinhalligan
      @MrRobinhalligan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So do the pins just "fall" out of the top of the tumbler and you just put the key in and put different ones in until its flush?

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robin Halligan The top pins have nothing to do with the rekeying process. It's all the lower(bottom) pins like I show in the video.

    • @MrRobinhalligan
      @MrRobinhalligan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand that but what i was asking (maybe i'm stupid) but how do you get the lower pins out of the tumbler.

    • @RecklessTheory
      @RecklessTheory 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Often times the keys that come with the a unit will have numbers printed on it that express pin size. However sometimes you have to gauge which fit and make it flush if there are no numbers or if you have just a container full of random pins then you will have to do it the hard way. Same with not having a follower. The kit makes it significantly easier but it costs over $60-150+ depending on brand though you might be able to get separate parts cheaper it will just be a hassle to put together a set that is viable. Especially when you can get many hardware stores to do it for quite cheap or even free.

    A quick question I couldn’t find an answer to on the Schlage website. I am hoping to rekey a Schlage encode, smart deadbolt and a Schlage B 60N deadbolt to use this same key.
    Is the five pin cylinder on the Encode deadbolt the same or similar to the five pin cylinder used in the B60N deadbolt?
    Would they use the same pins if I bought a rekey kit online to rekey these cylinders?
    A vendor on eBay is telling me they use different pins, but he doesn’t sound that sure of himself.
    Many thanks for your help.

    Seriously this helped me greatly. I had the basic concept down, but the Schlage re key kit I bought, the key didn’t fit my new locks. Once I saw your video I realized 2 things. One I can use the pins from the old locks and 2 I can cut pins down. I dumped all my old pins out and out of 4 new locks, only needed to cut 1 pin down. All are now done now. The only thing I didn’t understand was, the kit I had, had enough pins to do 6 locks, but how could I have gotten a blank key cut so that I could of just used all the pins in the kit with a new key?

    The question was asked by someone else (Robin Halligan), but you did not answer. How do the pins in the "Core" or 'Cylinder" come out? These are the ones needing replacement to create a sheer line but your video skips the step about how the bottom pins are removed and replaced with the appropriate ones to create the sheer line (even with the Core). If you turn the Core upside down do they simply fall out (like the upper ones did when you removed the Core). Thank you

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The LOWER pins are the pins you replace to "Rekey". The upper pins you should leave in place. I was only showing all parts of the lock. Use a follower as shown in my video. As you slowly pull out the core, the follower is right up against the core preventing the upper pins and springs from popping out. It will save you time putting them all back.
