oh the controversial proverbial 'moral dilemma' oh my! of course there are always good and bad that come along with things such as this. his services are invaluable to those that constantly find themselves locked out of their homes or businesses, or those that just want the best viable option when it comes to locking things. THEN of course this is where the 'moral dilemma' comes into play, learning these things can also be used for bad purposes too. But as with all things, in the end, WE are all only accountable for OUR OWN actions right?
It's not about carrying actually. If you work on one easy (on te technological terms these are easy things, meaning there's no new tech involved or being invented here) things that consists on basically one thing (in opposition to a set of more or less independent module) you are going to be more efficient than a company, that hires couple engineers working on different projects, has bureaucracy, and needs to care about mass production of things.

The issue with locks is 99% of the time they are simply destroyed, not picked. Ei bolt cutters, drills, or brute force. It doesnt make sense to pour millions into research to make a hard to pick lock when nobody lock picks anyway

The reason he keeps his identity secret is because 1) he's still a practicing lawyer, and 2) a number of lock manufacturers are likely to sue. Can't fault him for wanting to remain anonymous, given the impetus.

He also has videos where he tests the slash resistance of various locking bags, and the cut resistance of various strap type bike locks. to be honest it's not *that* big of a secret, he's been spotted at conventions before, and because he is fairly open about what he does and where he lives, it isn't very hard to find that information. I think he just keeps it as a ongoing stylistic choice due to how long he's done it.

Yeah, a first responder is smashing the glass before picking the door open, especially since they already have suitable tools to do the former rather than having to carry extra tools to do the latter.
@@dangerousmythbuster Yes, a number of years ago, the fire alarm went off after hours at my office. There were some people in the lobby, but they weren't willing to let non-employees in without a guest badge, so they didn't open the door. They must have forgotten that there are axes on fire trucks. Management sent a note that we can unlock the door for first responders. Our office had a magnetic lock with a pushbutton to unlock for emergencies, and a card reader for non-emergencies, so this tool wouldn't have worked anyways.

Despite the millions in view counts, people actually lockpicking doors is incredibly rare. Just look at the pregnancy center fires. Even though, ostensibly, any one of those people could have viewed these videos to break into a facility surreptitiously, most people just brute force the door. Especially if their plan is to do damage, like firebomb the place anyways.
"Forced entry" is different from "covert entry", lol. Most thieves use forced entry because it's the easiest. Pen (penetration) testers like Deviant Ollam, NotSoCivilEngr, etc. use covert entry because they don't want to get caught.
@@kasper_429 But that's the thing. Most people that break laws don't care. The vast majority of systems in place to catch people are broken down. Otherwise, trains wouldn't have been robbed so much it became a national security issue.
You've fixed the main flaw with this type of tool: size and portability. Folks should know that the newest Adams-Rite types cannot be bypassed with this or similar tools, but the majority of these locks in use today are still of the old style as they're robust and tend to last a long time.

@P RO -- Indeed, YT showed me an ad for one of those newer locks after the _other_ LPL video about commercial door locks like these. And it was advertised as being immune to this trick -- though I'd still love to see an attempt on one.
The Adams Rite locks I tried this tool on have roll pins installed on both sides of the “pin” you are trying to catch. Those roll pins don’t allow the hook to grab the pin. Not to say this tool doesn’t have a place, but our FD won’t be putting this tool in our kit, we will stick with spinning the lock cylinder out to trip the latch. That way, we typically only need to replace the lock cylinder’s set screw, which we shear off when spinning the lock cylinder out.
You know I am so extremely grateful that he does it twice. Saves me a lot of time of rewinding to see what I missed since I blinked the first time he does it.
Hey, LPL, piece of advice: if you're worried about working on glass doors, throw a thin layer of hairspray or soapy water on it. Makes the glass very non-reflective, perfect for filming.

@@Merennulli I use metric when working as an engineer or teaching. I use imperial when talking to regular folks or about sports. Also, I would never talk about how many watts my car engine produces; that thing has horses, a lot of them. Dammit!
@@jmchez European engineer here, I use metric for daily life, imperial for certain US standard items like 19" racks, 0.1" chip pins, ¼" headphone jacks. But metric for nearby parts like M6 bolts for the rack, 0.5mm modern chip pins and 3.5mm headphone jacks.
I was a service tech for years working on doors just like these. I wigh i knew about this tool it would have saved me so much time on doors with broken cylinders!!!!!
@@jessetheunending9357 they are in wide use and many locations have been open for decades with the same locks as when they first opened. Everything wears out eventually and all that metal on metal contact at least 2 times a day 90% of the days in a year for 20+ years will wear out any lock if you don’t change the core occasionally. The key wears out the pins/springs and the pins wear out the chambers which lead to the cylinder binding or the lock just not opening any more due to pin wear if you don’t insert the key just right.

You know if I wasn't so afraid of losing my job I would actually get one of these because I'm tried of waiting 15-20 mins to be let in every morning and have no time to grab water/cool down before my shift starts. Of course, jurisdictions other than that can and do define it differently. There's no requirement that it happen at night in the U.K. Theft Act 1968's definition of burglary, for example. Nor in the Australian Federal Criminal Code Act 1995's definition of burglary. Another fun fact: Under the U.K. definition, an "entry specialist" isn't a burglar unless xe has done *something more* than just enter.
Landlord “”how Secure is my door”” LPL fiddel door pops open in seconds “”about as secure as most big name shops and banks”” I’m actually not kidding about the bank bit, I’ve seen this style of door on banks, now granted my info is a little outdated as apart from a trip or two to the hospital I haven’t been out of the house in 10 years (damn illness and disability, and to think people where complaining that they haven’t gone out in weeks when coved had us all locked up) so the bank I saw this style of door on was like 25 years back, still pretty shocking to think a bank could have a Vulnerability this big heck it’s shocking thinking that most high street shops still have this vulnerability.
To be entirely fair, banks also tend to have retractable metal screens that lock significantly more securely, for use outside business hours. The insecure doors are only used while the bank actively has staff inside watching.
Having worked security in a bank, I can tell you after hours some have motion detection turned on in the lobby cameras so even if you get inside the door, the camera sees you moving and automatically sends the live feed for manual review to someone bored out of their mind watching multiple screens and the various police agencies on speed dial.

I doubt it goes as fare as some gas stations (handing over the cash), but both system relay on camera for law enforcement and safes for bulk cash storage.

The writer was upset that he may have given possible thieves the technique, and possibly the tools to burgle shops. I personally saw it as a chance to improve my skill set.

It's out of the ordinary to hear him for an hour, but you can tell how much LPL loves doing this stuff. On a side note, I found about a dozen vintage Locksmith Ledger magazines (well, 80's vintage) at the flea market.
In my country, doors always close on the inside with the door being inside the doorframe at about 1" depth on the locking side. Tools like these would never work in that situation, not even with a crowbar (unless you are planning to destroy the doorframe, which means you would also not need the tool). It's still weird to me the US has such easily picked doors
in the US, it is mandatory that the door on any building the public goes in must be able to be opened with 50 panicked people trying to push their way through it. if it is meant for more than a handful of people to be inside at a time, it must open JUST from having the panicked people pushing and being pushed against it. this means the door opens outwards, and is either designed to break open under force, or have "panic hardware" where it is not possible to be pushed against the door without pushing the latch open. it has to do wih the number of disastrous fires we've had where people were crushed against doors by other people trying to escape.
I had to think about situations I've faced. All storefronts, it would work, but offices inside, using this same lockset type with inswing doors, you are correct, wouldn't be able to be defeated by this tool.
@@cameronjadewallace you're right, but it's still pretty sad, that adding a 5 cent metal stamping, hasn't happened in the 20+ years of this lock design. Also, I think it's more of a "weakest link" issue. Make the lock too good, and a criminal will extort the next weakest element. It's why I never bothered to lock my convertible.

the reason this is still a security flaw is because people who want to break in would not pick and decode locks. they just break the door and get in anyways. all your security won't help against brute force which is the easiest and most used type of breach.
That would be a start against this tool, but it wouldn't be hard to fashion one a little longer to get around the plate. The lock itself needs to be replaced with a version without the flaw.
It's break prone, i suggest having one of the center parts bend at 90 from the body to give it a bit more stiffness. Source: i had a similar tool that's used to measure eyeglasses (kinda like how a ring maker uses the stick to figure out how much they widened the ring) and it bent and eventually broke. As for the lock, there's a mod that's easily done where you drill a hole through the mechanism just a little bit lower than the issue, and if you insert a pin before putting it into the door, it can't be done this way because the pin blocks a direct path to the tool. Honestly, this is something every owner should do. I think there's (or was) a guy that sells a drill bit, a template and a pin for this, i saw it back in 18 on a reddit post.

My various careers have involved me learning from police investigations that due to very few burglars (relatively) having these skills, no signs of forced entry does increase suspicion as to whether or not a burglary has actually occurred. I am also aware that, in the UK at least, carrying such a tool without a reasonable excuse can amount to a crime called 'going equipped' Be careful out there.
In the us, that offense is commonly called 'possession of burglary tools', though whether you can get tapped for it merely by *actually being in possession of those tools* depends, I gather, on the jurisdiction. In some places, you need extra elements of the crime. Being a licensed locksmith is generally an affirmative defense.
He has mentioned in past videos about how it's illegal to carry these tools in some states. However just start your own locksmith business and you'll be covered in some cases! Lol (not legal advice) (also speaking from a USA perspective)

Great to see an improvement on the tool. I never liked the original. It seemed almost impossible to carry easily so I went with Sparrows version. I’ll give this new one a try when my tools from Sparrows breaks.
This tool would actually be quite helpful, in my field. I even carry spare locksets, to be able to practice with. Edit: actually, I take that back. Most doors where I'd run into needing a tool like this, are inswinging and this tool wouldn't work on them.
I think that's the reason for the extra length and the two sides. If you have an in swinging door, you would use the 'other' hook and reach the same part of the mechanism.
I love the fact that you don't just sell these items, you show why they're useful. I've seen some people complain about these "ads" but it would be more irresponsible to sell an item you aren't confident in. And this shows how confident you are in the usefulness of the stuff you promote. Great job!
Yeah that'd work. But then the door wouldnt be able to open outwards. And I think its a Fire Code thing that High Traffic doors have to open to the outside, to prevent tramplings.
if it is a out swing door some places have a lip that goes over the area but if you have a in swing door can't put one on due to employees or customer could catch them on it and well you know how sue happy this country is.
To be fair it doesn't really matter what lock the landlord uses on that door considering the door is made of glass. No need to be a good locksmith when you can just throw a rock through it.

I think one of his older vids, mentions this setup, and how a lip, or bolted/ welded flange, or over lapping piece, to secure the gap, would definitly get in the way. But I think he also pointed out, like 95 percent have the gap there already.

If you made those hooks out of 1075 steel and sent them out to be austempered at 600 degrees Fahrenheit, you would have an incredibly difficult time breaking them, even intentionally. They would have incredible elastic range, while still being quite ductile.

Yeah, a first responder is smashing the glass before picking the door open, especially since they already have suitable tools to do the former rather than having to carry extra tools to do the latter.

There were some people in the lobby, but they weren't willing to let non-employees in without a guest badge, so they didn't open the door. They must have forgotten that there are axes on fire trucks. Management sent a note that we can unlock the door for first responders.
Our office had a magnetic lock with a pushbutton to unlock for emergencies, and a card reader for non-emergencies, so this tool wouldn't have worked anyways.
Okay I'm not even done watching the video yet, but the fact that the hook ends clip into the cutouts on the already-very-cool logo to prevent them snagging while stored is SLICK.

Despite the millions in view counts, people actually lockpicking doors is incredibly rare. Just look at the pregnancy center fires. Even though, ostensibly, any one of those people could have viewed these videos to break into a facility surreptitiously, most people just brute force the door. Especially if their plan is to do damage, like firebomb the place anyways.

"Forced entry" is different from "covert entry", lol. Most thieves use forced entry because it's the easiest. Pen (penetration) testers like Deviant Ollam, NotSoCivilEngr, etc. use covert entry because they don't want to get caught.

But that's the thing. Most people that break laws don't care. The vast majority of systems in place to catch people are broken down. Otherwise, trains wouldn't have been robbed so much it became a national security issue.
You've fixed the main flaw with this type of tool: size and portability. Folks should know that the newest Adams-Rite types cannot be bypassed with this or similar tools, but the majority of these locks in use today are still of the old style as they're robust and tend to last a long time.

There is a 2021 video on youtube by a locksmith bypassing a new one with very similar tools. Took a while & after using 3 different tools, but he opened it

I'm of the mind that there's always a way to do something if you apply enough thought but sometimes you need "hands on" experience to find your way through.
@P RO -- Indeed, YT showed me an ad for one of those newer locks after the _other_ LPL video about commercial door locks like these. And it was advertised as being immune to this trick -- though I'd still love to see an attempt on one.
The Adams Rite locks I tried this tool on have roll pins installed on both sides of the “pin” you are trying to catch. Those roll pins don’t allow the hook to grab the pin. Not to say this tool doesn’t have a place, but our FD won’t be putting this tool in our kit, we will stick with spinning the lock cylinder out to trip the latch. That way, we typically only need to replace the lock cylinder’s set screw, which we shear off when spinning the lock cylinder out.
You know I am so extremely grateful that he does it twice. Saves me a lot of time of rewinding to see what I missed since I blinked the first time he does it.
Hey, LPL, piece of advice: if you're worried about working on glass doors, throw a thin layer of hairspray or soapy water on it. Makes the glass very non-reflective, perfect for filming.
A polarizing filter on the camera lens can help too.
He could also use digital blurring.

@@jessetheunending9357 they are in wide use and many locations have been open for decades with the same locks as when they first opened. Everything wears out eventually and all that metal on metal contact at least 2 times a day 90% of the days in a year for 20+ years will wear out any lock if you don’t change the core occasionally. The key wears out the pins/springs and the pins wear out the chambers which lead to the cylinder binding or the lock just not opening any more due to pin wear if you don’t insert the key just right.

You know if I wasn't so afraid of losing my job I would actually get one of these because I'm tried of waiting 15-20 mins to be let in every morning and have no time to grab water/cool down before my shift starts. I’m actually not kidding about the bank bit, I’ve seen this style of door on banks, now granted my info is a little outdated as apart from a trip or two to the hospital I haven’t been out of the house in 10 years (damn illness and disability, and to think people where complaining that they haven’t gone out in weeks when coved had us all locked up) so the bank I saw this style of door on was like 25 years back, still pretty shocking to think a bank could have a Vulnerability this big heck it’s shocking thinking that most high street shops still have this vulnerability.
To be entirely fair, banks also tend to have retractable metal screens that lock significantly more securely, for use outside business hours. The insecure doors are only used while the bank actively has staff inside watching.
To be fair to banks, getting into the lobby doesn't normally get you very far; the vaults are presumably more secure.
Having worked security in a bank, I can tell you after hours some have motion detection turned on in the lobby cameras so even if you get inside the door, the camera sees you moving and automatically sends the live feed for manual review to someone bored out of their mind watching multiple screens and the various police agencies on speed dial.
The lock in the front door is the least of your problems if you're after anything of value that might be inside a bank.

I doubt it goes as fare as some gas stations (handing over the cash), but both system relay on camera for law enforcement and safes for bulk cash storage.

@@SandrA-hr5zk I didn't see the long form version, but I remember the posted video. Being in the field of lock smithing it was an excellent educational piece. The writer was upset that he may have given possible thieves the technique, and possibly the tools to burgle shops. I personally saw it as a chance to improve my skill set.

On a side note, I found about a dozen vintage Locksmith Ledger magazines (well, 80's vintage) at the flea market.

In my country, doors always close on the inside with the door being inside the doorframe at about 1" depth on the locking side. Tools like these would never work in that situation, not even with a crowbar (unless you are planning to destroy the doorframe, which means you would also not need the tool).
It's still weird to me the US has such easily picked doors
in the US, it is mandatory that the door on any building the public goes in must be able to be opened with 50 panicked people trying to push their way through it. if it is meant for more than a handful of people to be inside at a time, it must open JUST from having the panicked people pushing and being pushed against it. this means the door opens outwards, and is either designed to break open under force, or have "panic hardware" where it is not possible to be pushed against the door without pushing the latch open. it has to do wih the number of disastrous fires we've had where people were crushed against doors by other people trying to escape.
I had to think about situations I've faced. All storefronts, it would work, but offices inside, using this same lockset type with inswing doors, you are correct, wouldn't be able to be defeated by this tool.
Look, our locks are like our car parts. We could make them better, but it's just not profitable... 🙄
@@cameronjadewallace you're right, but it's still pretty sad, that adding a 5 cent metal stamping, hasn't happened in the 20+ years of this lock design.
Also, I think it's more of a "weakest link" issue. Make the lock too good, and a criminal will extort the next weakest element. It's why I never bothered to lock my convertible.

the reason this is still a security flaw is because people who want to break in would not pick and decode locks. they just break the door and get in anyways. all your security won't help against brute force which is the easiest and most used type of breach.

That would be a start against this tool, but it wouldn't be hard to fashion one a little longer to get around the plate. The lock itself needs to be replaced with a version without the flaw.

It's break prone, i suggest having one of the center parts bend at 90 from the body to give it a bit more stiffness. Source: i had a similar tool that's used to measure eyeglasses (kinda like how a ring maker uses the stick to figure out how much they widened the ring) and it bent and eventually broke.
As for the lock, there's a mod that's easily done where you drill a hole through the mechanism just a little bit lower than the issue, and if you insert a pin before putting it into the door, it can't be done this way because the pin blocks a direct path to the tool. Honestly, this is something every owner should do.
I think there's (or was) a guy that sells a drill bit, a template and a pin for this, i saw it back in 18 on a reddit post.

My various careers have involved me learning from police investigations that due to very few burglars (relatively) having these skills, no signs of forced entry does increase suspicion as to whether or not a burglary has actually occurred. I am also aware that, in the UK at least, carrying such a tool without a reasonable excuse can amount to a crime called 'going equipped' Be careful out there.

In the us, that offense is commonly called 'possession of burglary tools', though whether you can get tapped for it merely by *actually being in possession of those tools* depends, I gather, on the jurisdiction. In some places, you need extra elements of the crime. Being a licensed locksmith is generally an affirmative defense.
He has mentioned in past videos about how it's illegal to carry these tools in some states. However just start your own locksmith business and you'll be covered in some cases! Lol (not legal advice) (also speaking from a USA perspective)

A locksmith would be expected to be able to provide a reasonable excuse for having such a tool, billy burglar at 3 in the morning wearing latex gloves......not so much.

Edit: actually, I take that back. Most doors where I'd run into needing a tool like this, are inswinging and this tool wouldn't work on them.
I think that's the reason for the extra length and the two sides. If you have an in swinging door, you would use the 'other' hook and reach the same part of the mechanism.

if it is a out swing door some places have a lip that goes over the area but if you have a in swing door can't put one on due to employees or customer could catch them on it and well you know how sue happy this country is.
To be fair it doesn't really matter what lock the landlord uses on that door considering the door is made of glass. No need to be a good locksmith when you can just throw a rock through it.

If one of the doors (the opening door) had a lip that hid the gap, wouldn't that make this tool ineffective?
Yes, but there may be fire safety concerns. Iirc there are some situations where doors have to open outward.
I think one of his older vids, mentions this setup, and how a lip, or bolted/ welded flange, or over lapping piece, to secure the gap, would definitly get in the way. But I think he also pointed out, like 95 percent have the gap there already.

@@roysammons2445 Yea, the lock is for a bit of security, but, it doesn't end there. The level of security can go hand in hand ,with the engineering, around it. Apparently, some locks need more help, than others.😆

If you made those hooks out of 1075 steel and sent them out to be austempered at 600 degrees Fahrenheit, you would have an incredibly difficult time breaking them, even intentionally. They would have incredible elastic range, while still being quite ductile.
