Yeah, Double Agent is so dark and weird for Rush, I recall Geddy saying “it’s demented” at a live concert before performing it

When RUSH toured in support of Vapor Trails, Geddy dedicated this song to one of his bass mentors, John Entwistle, who had just passed away in June of that year, 2002.
This is a great song. CP is one of my favorite RUSH albums. 🤘🤘🤘🤘

Love the fuzz box guitar. Yet another riff/solo style for Alex the chameleon. Also dig the ride cymbal work and rollingtoms from Neil. Underrated track.

When John Entwistle past away Rush was on tour and played this one for the first time live with a dedication to him. There's a video of it on YT. They kept it in the set list for the rest of the tour. There's also a bonus audio only version on The cd's of LIVE IN RIO that wasn't on the dvd.

When Counterparts came out this was one of my favorite songs on the album. Over time it kind of feel if a bit for me, but hearing it again after a long time it's gone back up. The unusual guitar riff throughout is really cool to listen to and the sort of non-solo guitar solo is a nice change of pace. Overall a strong performance from the band.
Alien Shore was one I didn't like when it came out, but my recent listens show that it has definitely grown on me a lot.
I'm really looking forward to your album review because I have a feeling a lot of the songs you're saying you dig but aren't going nuts over week grow in you a lot with repeated listens because as you point out there is cool stuff in pretty much all of them. But I guess I'll just have to wait and see!

Used to be my favorite song on the record. May still be along with Cut To The Chase, Leave That Thing Alone, and Cold Fire. Alex's guitar is actually "growling" on this one. Also one of the hardest songs to decipher as far as lyrics.

Great reaction. I haven't listened to this one in a while I tend to listen to their older stuff most of the time. I forgot how much this song rocks. It is not a great piece lyrically and by no means is it one of their most complex musical compositions. I don't think it would make it in my top 30 favorite Rush songs (probably not even my top 50) but it really does have a nice energized, positive feel to it. All three of them played great as always but I particularly liked some of Neil's fills and the section where he plays a really meaty, driving rhythm that is sort of over top of everyone else in the mix for a few measures. Alex's guitar riffs and solo on this one also really stood out and I thought the stylistic comparisons to ZZ Top were spot on.
    Take care

A great vocal melody hook (something you can't say too often about Rush songs) and the tom patterns coming out of the chorus are awesome. I do hear the Pete Townshend before the solo, but the Keith Richards on the main riff is much stronger. This should've been a single, it would've fit in great on 90s radio.

  • @mmasque2052
    @mmasque2052 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah, the intro part sounds very Townsend-influenced, parts later on have a very ‘dirty’ Kieth Richards’ styling. The Rolling Stones’ sound was always more ‘raw’ while much of the Who seemed more ‘full’ to me. I am not a guitarist, so I’m not sure how to tell just how the sound is produced; to me, it sounds like 1 or 2 strings are being played versus a fully six string chord strum. There’s just…more…there. The part where you said ‘a little ZZ Top’ I was hearing more Mark Knopfler influence.
But this was something Rush did so well, take inspiration from all over, incorporate it and make it distinctly Rush. And that, I think, is why so many Rush fans are only fans of a certain portion of their discography. Unlike so many bands, Rush was constantly changing up their style in small or great ways.

  • @timlamb6196

to me it has an angus young vibe. and to me a zeppelin vibe between the second verse and second chorus.

Justin, I'm going to be honest. The new camera looks great, but I gotta say that I think I liked the old microphone better. This one sounds a little muffled. Maybe you could experiment with removing the windscreen (if it has one) or moving it a little closer? The old mic sounds a little more live, with the new one's sound being a little more "processed" sounding. The difference of speaking to someone face to face or on the telephone. Just my two cents...but the differences are subtle and they both get the job done just fine.

@@geddylee501 Victor is very mid-90’s in places, and very experimental in others. I think it’s definitely worth a listen.
You’re right the MFH is a bit of a disappointment. Geddy never goes nuts on the bass. But I think it was essential to the sound of the last three albums, two of which I would put in the list of stone cold classics.

Now 5 songs in and none of them suck. What could be happening?! I guess thanks should go out to Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Nirvana. That guitar riffing bit IS pretty Pete Townsend-y, but more like late 70's/early 80's, not the earlier big power chord version of PT. Although I also get your comparison to ZZ Top as well. I guess a defining trait of Rush throughout their career was that they were very good sponges!

He definitely likes them. But they weren't the soundtrack of his life and weren't a huge influence in his formative years like with most Rush fanatics. He approaches their music with a jaundiced eye and isn't going to just bow down to their greatness based on reputation alone. They need to prove themselves to him. I respect that in some ways. Still, he has been hypercritical and quite unfair at times in reacting to their music. But hey, at least he seems to think Signals is their best album, so he does have some taste in music.

To me it's the Fender Tweed sound and is more justified to compare amp than band. I just can't tell if he is using single coils or humbuckers. Just a really well articulated blues crunch. Either way , agree or disagree, I haven't heard a bad song off this album yet.
