    That town hall meeting was INTENSE (according to my dad). Parents didn't tell kids about it (I was about 10 when it started). Gun sales after that meeting went through the roof. And since he became so fond of sliding glass doors we all discovered how safe they *weren't* and bought dowels to put in the tracks of the doors and every window. I mean, this guy was "a real jerk!"

    For rape and murder and any other crimes causing bodily harm, there should be no statute of limitations. In the past those statutes existed because DNA wasn't a thing. It just made things too messy to take he said, she said, which is already a tough case to argue, to court after many years when you didn't even have DNA and memories could be wishywashy. We have DNA now. Statutes of limitations are no longer necessary.

    • @trekaddict
      @trekaddict ปีที่แล้ว

      In a lot of countries, there isn't one, at least for murder. In Germany, they used that to prosecute people tangentially involved in Nazi warcrimes.

    • @potato6785
      @potato6785 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MoonAndStars25the UK just has corroboration. The DNA means nothing if there’s no witness to corroborate it.
      Source? I’m a rape baby. My existence is literally verifiable proof of a crime. Three birth certificates and a DNA test scientifically proves that a 26 year old man was raping a 13 year old girl. Crown Prosecution Service wouldn’t prosecute because of a lack of corroboration. My mother’s family wouldn’t testify, the care-home that handed my mother to a pedophile unsurprisingly wouldn’t testify, so the rapist was let free. Well, until he got caught raping his best friend’s 12 year old daughter years later, that is.
      The UK’s legal system is nothing to be proud of. We put our fingers in our ears and scream “lalalala” when presented with proof - at least in America the problem is that they have a law saying it’s too late to prosecute based on the irrefutable evidence

    • @Sputterbug

      There is no statute of limitations for murder, never has been. I don't understand why you think that the statute of limitations has something to do with DNA. Much of the time cases rest on more than DNA, in fact corroborating evidence is usually needed for the DA to even think of prosecuting.

      I love watching serial killer / cold case file types of shows. then I end up spooking myself stupid. a couple of examples
      my kids had gone to my ex's house for the weekend, so I plopped myself in front of the computer and began watching an old case files episode. the story was about 2 hunters who vanished in Michigan, and rumor was the killers had fed them to the pigs. all well until I heard a knock on the door. I screamed like a little girl on helium and first thought in my head was, "OMG, the pigs came to NJ and are here to kill me". then I reminded myself pigs don't knock on doors, so I went to the front door. more knock knock and yep, I screamed again. Turned out it was a friend of my kids who had left a game at the house and came to get it back
      another time, same scenario, me being home alone. half way thru watching a documentary on Richard Ramirez and the whole leaving doors unlocked I got up to make sure my front door was locked. then went back to watching the remaining of the episode. on the way there I noticed one of my kids had left his TV on so I went to turn it off. well, since I was home alone I saw no need to knock on his bedroom door, and walked in. I saw someone sitting in front of the tv, so I took 2 steps back, tried to shout but no sound came out of my mouth, and according to my kid I turned ghost white. he later asked me if I thought serial killers first stop and watch tv before doing anything else.
      But, my dumbest one was when my kids were young. after they went to bed I decided to take a shower and then go to my room and put some PJs on. as I was doing that I noticed a pair of VERY white legs thru the corner of my eye. Queue in a REALLY loud scream. Then I realized this was my legs. what had happened was we had our camcorder connected to the tv so the kids could play and pretend they were talk show hosts. thing is, they forgot to turn the tv off. my next thought was, "I never realized I'm that damn white" lol

One time I did remember to lock the door when I went to a store near where I lived. I was so happy I remembered it too. was walking to the store still patting myself in the back over it when a gentleman, who had seen the whole thing came up to me and said, "I noticed you locked your car door, but you forgot to roll up the window"
      Re the house, I have 0 clue where my house keys are. probably a good thing I don't lock the door, I'd be outside waiting for a thief to break in

Hope he was never allowed to escalate beyond that. I will give my small town police credit, they escorted me to school and drove by my house for months afterwards.

      @@fee9224 thankfully our police took it very seriously. I wasn't the only report, but I was by far the youngest and had the most confrontational encounter. So they understood there was an escalating pattern. I can't be sure, but I'm pretty sure it went on for the better part of a year. (Congruent with others reports) Everyone kept telling me I was crazy, but finally I caught him, or should I say, I Heard him breathing, said I know someone is out there, then heard him laugh, saw him light a cigarette and walk away. It was pitch Black so I couldn't make out anything but a stocky male.
      But to answer your question, I had just turned 15 when it happened, so I was a teenager. Though I still had about a mile walk to school with my younger friend, which had the cops concerned. They watched me discreetly for long enough to scare him away. (Pretty sure it was our neighbor though, so that wasn't the end of the stalking and torment, buuuuuut that's another long story!) 😅

The police officer stopped down, looked me in the eyes and said “boys will be boys, why don’t you forget about it? You wouldn’t want to ruin his life”. That’s when I learned at a young age just how much life measured up to those of the opposite gender and lost total trust in authority. The man was never charged. The stalking/lurking thing early in the story reminds me of something that happened shortly after I was born. My mum was just a teen and shared a room with her older sister. They started noticing shoe prints outside the window and thinking they saw someone at the window and went to their dad freaked out.
    Pop called the cops, but they couldn't really do much. So, Pop and his best friend set up a tent in the back garden and obscured it in the bushes, and lay down some gravel in front of the window. They staked out over a night or two until they heard crunching on the gravel and burst out of the tent. It was a teenage boy, and he BOLTED... But my Pop was (and still is even at the age of almost 75) an athlete and gymnast. So, he sprinted after the kid and tackled him while his friend called the cops.
    Turns out it was one of my aunt's classmates who lived a couple of roads away. Thankfully he was just a little twit and was too embarrassed try anything else. But it's great knowing I spent a good deal of my life living with someone who was so onto it with that sort of stuff.

It also gives you the chance to model appropriate ways to deal with ur anger. The kids see you do it they are more likely to do it themselves. If you hide all negative emotions from ur kids it is harder for them to learn to regulate their own emotions.

      @MidnightSonnet 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      While this is generally true, there's a fine line between anger and frustration. I don't think small children should see pure anger even if the parent reels it in after awhile. That kinda shit can fuck a kid up because they don't understand the weird emotional rollercoasters. I should know. My mother was emotionally fucked. She'd have angry outbursts one minute, then calm down the next. It made living with her chaotic and scary. You never knew what type of mood she'd be in on any given day. My sister and I learned to be completely silent and motionless whenever she'd come home so that we could hear how she closed the front door, how she put her keys down, and how loudly or quickly she'd walk.
      It didn't matter if she apologized later for her behavior. We were scared of her. She was unpredictable. That created trauma in both of us. Every therapist I've told that to had said that what we experienced was abuse. Had it been reported, CPS would've probably taken us away.

Only actions and time should do that. No, a person shouldn't have any little mistake follow them around for life for the purposes of a non security level job. But committing a serious crime at 15 or 16 shouldn't disappear at 18. Maybe be able to have any single occurrence non violent crime expunged after 5 years . But if it's violent, it stays forever. The reason, in case anyone is wondering, why criminals can get multiple life sentences is because if they appeal one and win.....there will be another right behind it. This way they can't ever say "actually the evidence was weak on this ONE charge" and then walk free. They would have to win an appeal for EVERY SINGLE sentence before they could get out.

    • @METALFREAK03
      @METALFREAK03 ปีที่แล้ว

      It makes sense but here we have multiple parole hearings, they have to win each one before even getting an appeal then that appeal is heard again through court. Then if you win the appeal you are put on probation with an ankle device which tracks your every move. This can be kept on for 3 months to 5 years. You are also restricted from leaving the country, even if it's just nipping over to wales or scotland.
      We also have a sentencing syste, where you have life without parole. No chance of an appeal or parole hearing. Life means life.
      So equally, to my mind, US have a weird setup here. And just leans in how two teired their justice system is.
      ps we literally have one violent criminal locked up in a glass box under a maxium secure prison which was custom made for him as he was a danger to himself and to other prisoners in gen pop.

    Hi, Simon! Been listening/watching your videos on "The Casual Criminalist" since December 2022, commenting for the first time.
    I used to work at a juvenile courthouse (in the clerk's office) for almost a decade, and one of my duties was to perform background checks for those potentially joining the military, other jobs (not just limited law enforcement), internships, and certain scholarships. While I cannot confirm for other courts (because every county and state is different here in the U.S.), in our court, if you had a sealed record, the now-adult-then-juvenile-offender had to petition the court to unseal those records. We could not tell agencies if they had a sealed record. We could just say there was no history. Now, what happened a lot were kids would get traffic tickets and charged with speeding, driving without a license, marijuana charges, and they would be honest to the recruiter and tell them they had charges. Which, on the one hand, good for them, they're being honest and hey, usually, those kids (God, it feels weird calling a 19-year-old a kid) usually did not have extensive records, so they hopefully learned their lesson. It would just sadly cause a lot of paperwork.
    I did have one case where it was a D.A.'s office requesting that information because of a murder charge...but that's another story I can't give any more detail to sadly.
    My brother is currently a cop, in one of those yee-haw states as you've called it, and yeah, he had to pass a psychological evaluation before entering the police academy. Though, his evaluation (a lot like mine for my courthouse gig), from what he could tell me, was more about sexual deviance (non-consensual sexual violence and bestiality) and mental health concerns. I'm not sure if he had to complete one as well for the military before he was deployed or not.
    Though, given your comments on the shock about the 3-year statute of limitations... -coughs- No one tell Simon how a lot of police departments do NOT give ample warning that they're destroying evidence of your unsolved rape cases... Now, over here, the statute of limitations for rape, provided the victim is not under the age of 16 and it was committed before July 1, 2012, is 15 years. If the victim is under 16 and it was committed on July 1, 2012 or after, AND if it is not being prosecuted in the courts as a misdemeanor, there is no statute of limitations. Welcome to the States and the horrible headache that is "understanding" possible criminal punishments for sex crimes.
    Snark aside, I love the work you and your team do, and I enjoy your videos...except for the "disrespect" you gave my poor man Carl Kolshak, the true and only Night Stalker! (Because fuck Ramirez)

    The privacy concerns regarding DNA go much further than just the police as well. Imagine an insurance company refusing a claim or dropping coverage of a person because they are genetically more likely to be obese, get cancer, or succumb to addiction. Or worse yet, made the same determination not based off of your DNA. But off of the DNA of your parents, or your child. Now imagine being denied employment, refuse security clearance, or even kept on some kind of registry because you happen to have genetic markers that are found in murderers, rapists, or pedophiles. Despite never having even thought about committing a crime.

      Police arresting murders and rapists, insurance companies using genetics (which might as well be called eugenics) to discriminate... clearly the same level of need there.
      Either police catch more serial murderers and rapists (the only ones who really should be searched this way), or big brother has to cock things up every now and then arresting people, deign to look at your polls and/or just your fucking surname to find out your related to someone else... and serial killers and rapists get more time to do more harm to more people before getting caught.
      What a choice, with equal fucking sides... The only change is that horrific people get off the streets more and faster. Don't really get the domino fallacy here, just because you give express permission to police for serious crimes to use a data base, doesn't mean every dick tom and harry would be able to do the same thing.

    If you visit Sacramento today, you would never know this about the place. Prior to the EAR spree, Sacramento was a pretty quiet community. Kids played outside, almost till bedtime. People slept with their windows open to enjoy the Delta breeze. Cars and front doors were regularly left unlocked. In many ways, it was one of the largest "small towns" around. EAR changed all that. He terrified the entire metro area. Home security locks were sold out everywhere. Gun stores couldn't keep guns in stock. The animal shelters were adopting every big dog around. Parents suddenly wanted to know where their kids were at all times. A community that trusted their police service to protect them suddenly watched their police services powerless against this guy.
    When he finally went quiet after his spree, the community never recovered from the trauma inflicted on it. The innocence was gone, and Sacramento was never the same. The real force behind the GSK's capture was Anne Marie Schubert. She's the Sacramento District Attorney who spearheaded the task force to capture him. She grew up in Sacramento when he doing his attacks. She remembers pre & post EAR. She made it a part of her administration as DA to either catch or identify the EAR. While many elected officials may have ignored it since it was so many years prior, she had her office commit resources to it. Kudos to Anne Marie Schubert.

    I feel like every time Simon talks about someone robbing houses, he doesn't consider what a huge emotional damage it can do to the victim. People need their sense of security and if you can't feel safe and secure in your own home, where the hell can you? It's the place where you you do things that make you vulnerable, such as sleep and shower. It's where your kids sleep, and for many people deeply meaningful personal items can feel almost extensions of themselves. Then suddenly some dickhead takes away that sense of security, touches all your private stuff, makes a mess and steals something sentimental just for their own twisted power trip. It's not "just stealing and being a bit of a jerk", it's traumatizing.

    • @Ashley-wi4ng

      People have gone through medicine cabinets and entered houses on the other side so locking the doors isn't always going to help you.

      Probably Simon had to overlay the audio because youtube flagged it for violence or something. And the only way to do that without reuploading (which would hurt the algorithm and cause it to perform worse) is with youtube's very simple built in editor.

      @@emmagatewood3898 you do know touch DNA is a thing, right? Literally all they need are skin cells. Scary/ Awesome thing? Touch DNA can be sequenced after several transfers. So, your DNA can now be found somewhere that you've never been, identified with your 4th cousin's DNA that was uploaded to GEDMatch. There's almost NOTHING you can do to prevent that.
      But.... sequencing touch DNA with such a small sample is relatively new and highly specialized. Also, it's only done at a few well-known labs (like Othram in Texas). Plus, it takes a lot of time to trace shared relatives and eliminate potential matches....so, this is extremely unlikely.
      For now.

    Yes, the US is huge. It blows my English friend, Neil's, mind that there are 4 time zones in the Contiguous United States. And that doesn't include Alaska or Hawaii.
    The TV show you showed was titled, "Kolchak: The Night Stalker". I don't recall if it had anything to do with these fellows.

      I visited Denmark a few years ago and some friends I met there were complaining that it would take them four hours to drive back home to Germany from Copenhagen. It would take me more than four hours to drive to the other end of the state and there are 32 states bigger than the one I live in. Kinda puts things in perspective.

      The lack of an edited in explanation was probably to avoid reuploading, since reuploads really hurt video performance. And the lack of finesse I'd bet was because of using youtube's built in editor to replace the sound.

    The Stargate fact about O'Neal's son was referenced as far back as the film, it's the reason he volunteered to go with a nuke, it's also why he gets angry at his men when the boys from the village rescue them with their guns ordering them to take the guns off them. He even says it to Jackson while he's arming the bomb

    This was the source of nightmares for young women. We were told not to trust the cops. Go to a well lit populated area, gas station parking lot or even a police station, don't pull over for a cop on the side of the road. To be young, living alone and afraid of cops, good times. 👀

      Not just you. I had it too. Maybe jen was censoring something he said for a good reason? I can't think of any other reason. Mistakes like that don't ususally go out, but maybe it did this time? I'm thinking of how on brain blaze Sam will fast forward, put the WRONG! meme in there, ect., but that wouldn't fit here. So a fake blunder may have been better than something that may have been an accidental distasteful moment? Or there could have been a mistake with the video/audio on his end and did not want to rerecord a super long video.

    I've been binging this channel for two weeks now, and my main thought is that Simon goes against that stereotype of people who are interested in true crime having criminal minds themselves. The fact that Simon has so much empathy for the victims and is horrified by their fates. I think it's nice to have someone with those views in the community, it feels like you have a lot of respect for the victims, and none at all for the killer, as it should be.

      I've been following Cas Crim since the early days and it's a really important reason why I keep following. There are some others with that compassion and consideration (Emma Kenny, Stephanie Harlowe, Kendall Rae etc.) but Cas Crim is definitely in my top three. I actually move on immediately if I feel a content creator is disrespecting the victims and treating them like they aren't real human beings with value.
