EASY and FREE Watering System for Dollar Tree Stackable Planter and Cucumber Update

- I literally used garbage (used pop/water bottles) to create a drip type watering system for my Dollar Tree stackable planter. See how you can create one of these too.
Someone with some common horse sense. I have been trying to figure out a watering system for 2 weeks. Amazing Lady! You are the type of grandma I hope to grow into. I’m a newer grandma and I aspire to be one like you!

Perhaps, on your top bottle, do not cut off the entire bottom. Leave it attached with about 1-1 1/2 to the side bottle, like a hinge. This will help keep moisture in from evaporation, and keep debris out of the cup. The lower cups, I would cut to the depth of the pots, again it would keep debris out. Love this idea. Thank you. I saw an idea to line the bottom of each "pot" with a coffee filter so the soil doesn't fall out. Thought that was a pretty good idea too.

What did you use to make the hole for the water bottle? I'm afraid of it cracking.
I use a small layer of fallen leaves in the bottom of my potted plants-keeps the soil from seeping out and composts itself.😊
I use a small soldering gun.Easy, works great.

I got a wheeled caddy for mine too and I’m definitely adding the watering system. Brilliant and way less expensive than a green stalk. 🎉🎉🎉

I've had a problem finding a tray that will fit mine that is priced reasonably. I have the medium sized one.

@@lifeonturkeylane5950 hon I wouldn't have written it if I hadn't meant everything I said. I'm use to country real people not ones that put on the dog and try to talk over your head. My mama and daddy and all us girls 3 of worked the gardens during spring summer and harvest times. We canned for there were 5 kids my parents and until I was almost 9 my ma ma (grandmother) lived in a 3 bedroom house. I also had 2 baby brothers. We had chickens milk cows horses pigs rabbits pigeons and quails. Daddy worked a job and we took care of animals and younger siblings while mama milked churned. We were raised in church. Where daddy believed and practiced that part of the Bible that says spare the rod spoil the child. Lol he was strict but his word was law. He was fair though. Both my parents are gone now and I miss having that kind of down to earth people. Which lady u are. U are precious it was like watching and being with my family my aunts and mama again. U warmed my heart and made my day. I wish u happiness and a very long and blessed life. God love you now and forever. Ty

Great ideas!
I would offer two suggestions - the first is that if the bottle lid doesn’t want to attach easily, turn it backwards first to set it, then you can easily tighten.
The second is to use old cotton shoestring, cording, or even torn strips of fabric that run from inside the bottle (knot it inside the bottle) out to the edge of each pod. Bury the cords in the potting soil horizontally. Bury the cords deep in the soil in each pod to help the roots train to go deep. Repeat for the remaining layers. When you water, it can help wick the moisture out to the edges of the planter pods.

When I was about 12, I lived on Wild Turkey Ridge, only for a couple years, NW Arkansas. You so remind me of my Aunt Volita, she was an avid gardener, she had a huge garden. In summer we would sit on the deck and snap beans.

Plain old water bottles will work too if that's easier for you.
👍🏾 Buy bottles of water. You get to drink the water and recycle the bottles. Dollar Tree sells bottled water in that size too. Savings all around!
Instead of putting in dirt and then removing the same dirt, place the plant (cup and all) into the planter. Fill the dirt around the cup and tap it firm. Carefully twist and remove the cupped plant. Holding just the plant, strip off the cup and the dirt ball will fit perfectly back into the hole you created.

This was such a well thought out, organized tutorial, and I truly appreciate it. I’d just watched another video prior to yours which used the same basic concept, but it wasn’t *nearly* as neatly done, nor did they think to secure the bottles by attaching the tops through the bottom of the planter. I’m so glad I found you!

Yes, I was thinking of using a 2 liter bottle on top this year. I think it will work so much better.
I love your water system idea. It also occurred to me to add different size rocks to water bottle to slow the drip AND add weight to tower to help keep it secure. We too have strong winds here in central Texas. ❤

We have some strong winds in Las Vegas, and wondered if these would have enough weight to keep from blowing over--like the idea, but worry about wind.
Good tip about making sure that your plants you buy have a few branches, so you can make bunch of smaller ones
I'm going to use your system to put marigols among my tomatoe plants, securing w/ a rebar stake on 2 sides (windy Oklahoma). I won't step on my marigolds this year.

I set my watering system up the opposite way. I fed wicking rope through the bottom of each, I think I had 5 stacks. I set the stack in a big saucer and watered that daily. It was a little tricky to feed the string through each pot above it, and I tied knots above and below each pot so the wick wouldn't slip down.
I bought some more planters this year and will try your bottle trick since it's easier to set up.
Wow the wicking system sounds really neat but yes I can see that it might be a little difficult to set up. Let me know if you have as much success as I did with the bottle set up. Happy planting.
I'm not sure if this will help you, but I bought a soldering iron for $6 & you can use that to make the holes in your bottles or drainage holes. It's a bit easier than the drill and you don't have to worry about cracking your pots. I even forgot mine outside for a week & it still works! You can also use it to cut the bottles

My first year working with these stackable planters. I can see that watering will be an issue. You’ve come up with an excellent solution for watering. Mine are currently stacked on a 6’ electrical conduit pipe. Next year I may consider incorporating your watering system. I’m also using the smaller stackable planter (2) as spacers between the larger ones to enable turning the pots for equal sun exposure and airflow. Keep sharing and have a plentiful growing season.
Thank you. Using the smaller stackables in between sounds interesting. They might also be helpful as a watering system as well. I have put my towers on inexpensive plastic lazy Susans so I can spin them for sun exposure.
Instead of metal conduit why not use pvc drilled with small holes.

great video and great watering system...Now I know to not cut off much of the water bottle that is on top and to make sure I cut the others to be as tall as the planter so no dirt gets inside of them...

Great idea. Here in FL in zone 9b I have to worry about wind so I need to put a post down the center. I may try thin PVC and put holes in it. But I will try a short tower using your watering method. Thanks for sharing.
Ah yes windsccould be problematic. Maybe you could leave the caps off of the bottles and thread your “holey” pipe through the bottles. I tried just putting holes in pipe but did not work good. All the water went straight to the bottom level.
someone here suggested putting some rocks in each bottle to stabilize the bottle and also control outflow to not be too fast.

we used a tree stake in the center, pounded it in the ground, we also run a sprinkler hose up through the center to the top and have three sprinkler soaker heads watering from the top down, the sprinklers come on when the garden sprinklers come on.

She has a DeWALT brand drill. The DeWALT brand is the best. This woman is a pro.
Not a pro. The hubs got the dewalt at a yard sale but if you drill from the top down and have the base on a firm surface any drill should do fine.
I just put two sets of 6 together. My friend gave me three bags of bottles that fit perfectly. I can’t wait to get them planted. O third I have a couple wheeled stands too. Thanks for all of the ideas!!

Really wobbly,,, a wind will knock it over... better secure it somehow.
Also the plants on 2nd, & lower levels they look like if their tall growing this won't work, or you'll have to plant them crooked
@@streetsmartintelligent Hello. Mine were not wobbly but I don't get that much wind where I keep them. You can shorten your tower or try stabilizing with a pole or pvc pipe. If you drill holes in the pvc, the bottle trick will still work, you will just not be able to screw the caps on them. As far as taller plants, you may have to pick plants that are the right size for the planter. I have planted basil and dill and other herbs and they seem to do just fine. Sometimes they get a little bushy but they can be pruned throughout the season. Hope this helps.

Wet transplants well to separate easily and not damage roots.
After drilling a center hole, I used a bamboo to hold my tower stacker in place because the wind kept blowing it over. This seems to be a good idea with the watering system. If it works well to keep the plants watered, I'd suggest just cutting the bottom just enough to lift it leaving it as a lid to open and close so you can fill it with water. Can use a twist tie to keep it from blowing open in the wind. This helps prevent some evaporation.

I just got some of these at my local dollar store and I was thinking the same thing! You can stack a bunch of these up and make an almost aeroponic garden type system but with soil obviously, just same idea where they are all stacked. Excited to try these this year!
Did you find an inexpensive lazy Susan? Yours turns so easily. And how did you make the larger center hole for the water bottle cap?
Yes, I found a couple of regular kitchen lazy Susans at Ross for $3 or $4 and they work great.

might want to add cloth to move the water to roots leaching the water to each plant, then cut the bottom of plastic bottle to shimmy over watering system so no dirt gets in it, remove when you water. just a thought happy gardening!

Awesome... I have a few of these planters purchased a few years ago, unused. Hoping to get a few more. The only thing I might do differently is wrap a piece of landscape fabric around the bottles to keep the soil from leaching in. In addition, I'm really into air pruning roots, so I may make tiny holes around the bottom sides where they will drain over the next pot below. Anyway, this really is a fabulous solution! Thank you.

Great idea, it really looks like it runs through fast, I think I'll try it and put less holes, and the top one could be cut where less of the bottle is cut off! Also this is just my opinion but your cucumbers, I would only put one in those pots, they would do better! Happy growing! I love that you have your planters on a turntable! Great idea also!
You are right about a few less holes and I had to cut the bottles down quite a lot so the next layer would stack on top. I intend to thin the cucumbers more, I was waiting until warmer weather and to see which ones were growing better and were more hardy before taking any more of them out. Glad you enjoyed the video.

@@lifeonturkeylane5950 aw not tried them yet this will be my first year growing fruit and veg 🌿 I sowed some chilli seeds at the beginning of the month and yesterday sowed sunflower and zinnia seeds - spring is just around the corner now am on the east coast of UK (Whitby - where Dracula supposedly landed) we're having a chilly time just now but the days are getting longer and sunnier at last 😎☀️ and the spring bulbs are popping up 🌷🪻🌼 love from Whitby 💙

Beautiful plants and great idea with the planteer pots. I use those same pots. Been using them for starting a lot of seedlings
I had done some of these exact pots in a similar manner ony not using the top/cone ends of the bottles or caps. just putting holes in the bottle sides and bottom to drip down the next level. my bottoms were a bit drier than the first couple levels. I believe the water flow was too fast. now with the caps on I see it filters quite a bit more controlled. I'm gonna do this way, I like it! new tricks. Thanks for the suggestions

What a great idea! I'm not a big fan of Dollar tree pots for planting. They crack and break so fast. You're lucky if you get to use them for two seasons before having to replace them.
Good idea, thinking about getting stackable planters to plant some vegetable to bring in indoor for winter.

here in FL we have areas without refuse collection ... you can go to the transfer station and dump yourself, and at same time pick up all the plastic bottles you need from the recycle bin in case you don't want to buy water just for this project!
